I was the oldest of five children back in the 60’s. We lived in a nice little three-bedroom bungalow(平房)in Michigan. Mom and Dad worked so hard, yet always found the time to spend with us. The only place they could take five active children to was the drive-in (汽车影院)movies!
We always looked forward to going to the drive-in! Mom would fill a big bag with homemade popcorn. On the way there, Dad would make a special stop at the penny candy store, where we were all allowed to fill a little brown bag with all kinds of penny candy. We were so exited as we carried our treasures back to the car, knowing we couldn’t eat it until the cartoon began.
We would get there early, so that we could play on the playground, right under the big screen. As soon as it started to get dark, the screen lit up, and we would race back to the car to get our candy.
There were always two cartoons playing before the movie, like Felix the Cat, The Coyote, and Tom and Jerry, But what was just as exciting was the ticking clock advertisement for the refreshment stand, with dancing hot dogs, candy and ice cream. That came on right before the movie. It was all that five kids could hope for, and by then, stay awake for.
We would get home around 2 am, pretty late for us. Mom help ed us drug ourselves and our pillows to our beds and dad carried in the little ones.
I was disappointed the day they closed the last drive-in in our town. It will always hold special memories for us—those days of penny candy.

Do you feel lonely If you do, you are not alone. It’s more than a personal mental health issue.
Loneliness is a global issue. Half-a-million Japanese are suffering from social isolation. The UK recently appointed a minister for loneliness, the first in the world. In Australia, Victorian state MP Fiona Patten is calling for the same.
What do cities have to do with loneliness Think of the awkward silence in a lift full of passengers who never communicate. Now think of a playground where parents often begin chatting. It’s not that the built environment “causes” interaction, but it can certainly either enable or limit potential interaction.
Can we think of different ways to be in the city to “cure” loneliness I recently conducted a graduate design studio at the Melbourne School of Design. The students, using design as a research methodology (方法), came up with potential architectural and urban responses to loneliness.
Fanhui Ding came up with a student---run restaurant for the University of Melbourne. Students get credit working on the farms that supply the restaurant, which can be used to pay for a meal. People also get discounts for dining at the same table, encouraging students to interact over food. Given the many international students who suffer from loneliness, her concept used cooking, food and farming to cure loneliness.
Some students deal with familiar cases, such as building “Puppy Society”, an app that connects a pet with multiple owners, designing more social interaction spaces in high-rise apartment buildings and redesigning supermarkets to make them places for people to visit on a Sunday morning.
Beverley Wang looked at loneliness in the ageing population. She came up with a project called “Nurture”, for which she designed a kindergarten co-housed with a nursing home. Designing spaces for storytelling, she brought the elderly into the kindergarten as informal teaching assistants, giving them a sense of purpose.
Moving beyond merely analyzing the problems, the research output shows that an alternative, less lonely future is indeed possible. Without claiming to solve loneliness, design can be an important tool in response to it.
28.What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A.Half of the Japanese are living with loneliness.
B.The UK attaches little importance to loneliness issues.
C.Australia is likely to follow the UK’s example.
D.Loneliness has been a primary concern globally.
29.What can students do in Fanhui Ding’s design
A.Work in the restaurant to pay for meals.
B.Pay less if they share tables with others.
C.Gather credits for their college graduation.
D.Establish international culture communication.
30.How does the project “Nurture” benefit elder people
A.By providing them working opportunities.
B.By employing them as the formal staff.
C.By asking children to tell them stories.
D.By lifting their awareness of self-value.
31.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Key principles of designing city buildings.
B.City’s potential to encourage social connection.
C.Good urban designs to battle social loneliness.
D.Architectural concepts to ease elders’ loneliness.
D
I sometimes wonder if old Finchley has the right personality to be a research scientist. He keeps asking when he’ll be coming back. After all, it was his own fault. Nobody tries out what has just been invented on themselves any more but Finchley. Well, he must have pumped about a thousand cc into himself before I noticed he was clearly becoming smaller.
It was funny watching him, because his clothes remained the same in size. They simply piled up around him so that he looked like a small boy in his father’s clothes. But he kept getting smaller and smaller. As my colleague Dawson and I watched him, he disappeared! All we could see was Finchley’s clothes on the floor. They looked so strange, because the lab coat was on top, shirt and trousers inside and, I suppose, underclothes inside again. It gave me a strange feeling, and I think Dawson was a bit shaken, too.
Dawson was sitting on his chair in front of a microscope he’d been using to examine a family of mites (螨). He looked through the scope kind of absently again, and was nearly scared to lose awareness when he found old Finchley waving back from the other end.
It seems as if Finchley had taken a free ride on a dust mite and landed on the land of the mite family. Of course, we didn’t know till Finchley told us later. But anyhow, as I said, Dawson nearly passed out. He jumped off his chair and pointed at the microscope, too shocked to speak.
32.Finchley disappeared because ________.
A.he took something poisonous
B.he was changed into a dust mite
C.his father’s clothes totally covered him up
D.he tried out what had just invented on himself
33.It frightened Dawson to see Finchley ________.
A.got out of his scope by accident
B.was waving through his scope
C.suddenly got lost in his clothes
D.gradually disappeared in the lab
34.It can be inferred that Finchley, Dawson and the writer have possibly invented ________.
A.some kind of medicine
B.a new powerful microscope
C.a machine to make people small
D.a new way to study the family of mites
35.It can probably be concluded that Finchley ________.
A.passed out there and then
B.is not fit to be a scientist
C.is a devoted scientist
D.will remain tiny all the time

This particular day began at seven in the morning in Casablanca(卡萨布兰卡). My friend Mike and I were going to visit Abdel, a young man we’d worked with on a volunteer project in Kenitra, an industrial city on the Moroccan(摩洛哥) coast. He’d been expecting us to arrive in Casablanca for a few days now, and since he had no telephone, he’d written down his address and name and told us to just show up-his mother and Sisters were always at home.
Apparently the address he had written down was hard for foreigners like us to understand. When we got into the neighborhood, our taxi driver started asking directions. Eventually, with the help of a policeman, we were led to a house down a winding road. Our driver went to the door and inquired. He came back saying Abdel’s sister was in this house visiting friends and would come along to show us where they lived.
Soon a girl of about sixteen emerged from the house. Surprisingly, she didn’t look like Abdel at all. Still I’d seen other families where children didn’t look alike, so I didn’t give it too much thought. She then brought us to a yard. We waited in the yard while the sister went in and returned accompanied by her mother, sisters and brother-in-law, all of whom greeted us with cautious warmth. We were shown into the living room. The mother told us in broken French that Abdel was out, but would be home soon. We sat on low, cushioned seats, drinking sweet mint tea and eating sugar cookies, while the family members sat with us and made shy, polite conversation that frequently fell into uncomfortable silence.
An hour passed, more family members emerged from inner rooms. I was again struck by the fact that none of them looked a thing like our friend.
After another two hours had passed with no sign of Abdel, the family insisted on serving us a meal in their kitchen next door. “Soon,” was the only response I got when I inquired as to what time Abdel might come back.
Finally we heard the words we had been waiting for from the mother. “Please, Abdel is back in the living room.”

Mom would fill a big bag with home-made popcorn. On the way there, Dad would make a special stop at the penny candy store, where we were all allowed to fill a little brown bag with all kinds of penny candy可知母亲会装满一大包自制爆米花,父亲会特意去买糖果,在棕色的袋子里装满各种糖果,故选D
That came on right before the movie. That指前文的ticking clock advertisement,故选D
【答案定位】根据第二段,“Dad would make a special stop at the penny candy store, where we were all allowed to fill a little brown bag with all kinds of penny candy. We were so excited, as we carried our treasures back to the car”可知,父亲特意买了爆米花之后,下文紧接着说我们非常兴奋,带着“我们的宝贝”回到车中,可以推断出“宝贝”就是前文说的爆米花。
28.C 29.B 30.D 31.C
The UK recently appointed a minister for loneliness, the first in the world. In Australia, Victorian state MP Fiona Patten is calling for the same.
People also get discounts for dining at the same table, encouraging students to interact over food.
Designing spaces for storytelling, she brought the elderly into the kindergarten as informal teaching assistants, giving them a sense of purpose.
Can we think of different ways to be in the city to “cure” loneliness Without claiming to solve loneliness, design can be an important tool in response to it.
32.D 33.B 34.A 35.C

67.One possible version:
Finally we heard the words we had been waiting for from the mother, “Please, Abdel is back in the living room.” We entered the lovely living room and a young man came forward with an uncertain expression on his face. “Hello, I am Abdel.” he said cautiously. Immediately I realized there was a mistake. “I – I’m sorry, I’m afraid you are not the Abdel we are looking for,” I giggled nervously. For a split second no one said anything. Then Abdel exclaimed heartily, “It doesn’t matter at all.” After hearing our story, he asked us to show them the address.
I took out the piece of paper Abdel had given me back in Kenitra and showed it to the new Abdel. “This is Baalal Abdel!” said the second Abdel. “We went to school together! He lives less than a kilometer from here. I will bring you to his house.” After taking photos and exchanging addresses with the family, we hugged good-bye. Then the new Abdel led us to the home of our friend Abdel. There, I reached out and hugged him. All of us enjoyed what a beautiful surprise and simple kindness had opened to us: warmth, friendship and sincerity.
