In July, I received an e-mail from Richard K. Weems, who directed the creative writing division of the New Jersey Governor's School of the Arts. He hired me to teach poetry to a group of gifted high school students.
When I met the group, in contrast to what past teachers had done, I proposed that we run a poetry stand, which would be like a country lemonade stand, except that people would be coming for poems. Whatever customers asked for, the students would write.
The group were willing to go with my idea, though they had questions: Would we collect money at the poetry stand No. What if there were no customers It's part of the risk. What if we had nothing to say on the topic they gave us You will, and I'll train you.
A few times a day, whenever we had a little extra time in the writing studio, I asked my students to turn to a clean sheet of paper and I gave them an assumed poetry-stand poem request. I tried to get the students into the habit of asking for specifics and authenticity.
On Thursday morning came the big day on Palmer Square. We set up the tables and chairs beside the place. The foot traffic to and fro was a sight that might have pleased Walt Whitman: people of all ages and races. People slowed tentatively(试探性地)at the sign offering free poetry. A woman wheeling a stroller became our first customer to have someone write for her kid on the subject of candy. An Asian woman asked if the poets could do haiku. A man told us that he only spoke Spanish. So we brought Ricky, a Latino kid to take his order and returned with a poem in Spanish. The man couldn't contain his smile.
By 4:30, when it was time to leave, customers stood in line, wanting to know when we would be returning. I watched and their enthusiasm made me wonder about the place of poetry in the lives of ordinary Americans.

The latest photo taken at China's well-known Tsinghua University became a hit, where a student was seen using his laptop while riding on a bike. The moral of the story is that wasting time on things like commuting between university facilities becomes unacceptable, since the pressure to graduate top of the class is so intense.
Into the real world, working extra hours is a common practice of China's most brilliant figures in technology. In finite overtime, premature balding(秃顶) and hospital admissions are all but part of standard professional life for the nation's brightest. Similarly, blue-collar workers don't have it easier. Food delivery riders are reportedly trapped by an algorithm(算法) that automatically works out the best delivery time for app users, and never minds if the workers are at the risk of road accidents.
People are wondering whether all this hard work really makes life better. Actually, it may well be making things harder for everyone, but there doesn't seem to be a way out. A popular sense of being stuck in an ever so exhausting rat race where everyone loses has given rise to a new buzzword: neijuan(involution). The Chinese word, neijuan, is made up of the characters for "inside" and "rolling", and is understood as something that spirals in on itself, a process that traps participants who know they won't benefit from it.
"From a sociological point of view, involution is unavoidable because of society's structural shifts," said Yan Fei, a professor of sociology at Tsinghua University, "One big question for the middle class is how to remain in the middle class. Meanwhile, the lower class still hopes to change their fate. But the middle and upper classes aren't so much looking upward, and they are marked by a deep fear of falling downward. Their greater fear is perhaps losing what they already have," he explained.
8、Why is the photo of a student in Tsinghua University mentioned in Paragraph 1
A.To clarify the writing purpose. B. To present an argument.
C. To introduce the topic of the passage. D. To describe a character.
9、What can we learn from the passage
A.It's common to work overtime in the real world.
B. Neijuan reflects the fierce competition in China.
C.Food delivery riders benefit a lot from the apps.
D. People live a better life due to their great efforts.
10、What can be inferred from what Yan Fei said in the last paragraph
A. The lower class suffers a deep fear of falling downward.
B. The middle class tries to be a member of the upper class.
C. The greatest fear of every class is to lose what they already have.
D. Involution is inescapable in the development of society for each class.
11、From which column of the newspaper can the passage be taken
A. Society. B. Economy. C.Entertainment. D. Tourism.
Mining rare-earth(稀土) elements (REEs) has long been considered a dirty business, as it can lead to water and soil pollution, but a new technology developed by Chinese scientists may change the trend, offering a greener alternative for the industry.
REEs, especially heavy ones, are an essential part of many high-tech devices, from the engines of electric cars and smartphones, to LED lights. More than 90% of the global heavy KEF demand is sourced from ion-adsorption deposits(离子吸附沉积物), which form within weathering erasts(硬壳). However, conventional mining applies overmuch usage of chemical agents to recover REEs front these deposits, not only exhibiting low efficiency but also polluting the environment.
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry proposed a new approach in the jounal Nature Sustainability earlier this month, showing that employing electrokinetic mining techniques to extract(提取) REEs from weathering crusts can be both clean and efficient. Using this approach, researchers generated an electric field by putting electrodes(电极) on the top and bottom of a volume of soil. The electrokinetic effect can speed up the migration of REEs, reducing the need for harmful chemical agents.
To evaluate the practicality of the new method, they carried out several experiments of different scales. Results suggested that the new method outperformed traditional mining techniques. For instance, the scaled-up experiments achieved a recovery efficiency of 96% within 67 hours by using electrokinetics. Using the conventional technique, it was only 62% at 130 hours.
The difference between the impact of the old and the new approaches was even more significant in an on-site field test: Using electrokinetics can achieve a recovery efficiency higher than 90%, an 80% decrease in polluting agent usage and a 70% reduction in impurity.
The study confirmed that this novel electrokinetic technology enabled green, efficient and selective recovery of REEs. Researchers also noted that the new method has great potential for use in the mining of other critical metals under conditions in which the metals exist in ionic states.
12、Why is the new technology referred to as a "greener alternative" for REE mining
A. It is based on cleaner energy.
B. It achieves a higher recovery efficiency.
C. It recovers REEs from weathering crusts.
D. It depends less on the use of chemical agents.
13、How does the author present the practicality of the new technology
A. By analyzing causes. B. By listing examples.
C. By providing test results. D. By giving instructions.
14、What can we know about the new technology
A. It contributes to the extraction of purer REEs.
B. It causes REEs to be mined at a higher cost.
C. It is widely adopted in mining critical metals.
D. It frees REE mining of the impact on nature.
15、What is the text mainly about
A.A new technology with great potential in mining metals.
B.A greener REE mining technology with higher efficiency.
C. The difficulties in mining REEs from ion-adsorption deposits.
D. The differences between conventional and new REE mining methods.

六、读后续写
34、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I consider myself technologically capable, or at least I used to! However, shopping with my husband the other day clearly showed I'm being left behind by the times.
Finishing picking lots of goods in Carrefour Supermarket, we walked toward the checkout counters, noticing few people there. In fact, despite all the lights above the counters on, showing open, there was no cashier(收银员).Walking to a deserted counter, like an ATM machine, I saw it was brand-new. On the other side of it was a long moving belt leading down to a kind of island. When I placed my shopping cart near the machine, it monitored my presence and spoke to me in a soft woman voice, "Please slide your card on the front glass."
"OK," I thought, "I can do this." But my husband thought we should find somebody to walk us through this new process.
"Are you kidding " I said. "Relax! I'll have us out of here within seconds."
"Please slide your card on the front glass," she asked again, except that this time she sounded a little impatient. Were they programmed to annoy customers
I swiped(刷) my card down the card-slider on the side of the machine and it asked me to do it on the front glass. I thought I must have slid my card upside down so I turned and swiped it again down that slider. Then the not-so-nice-anymore-computer-machine lady told me I needed help. Honest to God, that was what she said; she said I needed somebody's help.
A store assistant noticed this, coming over and I told him there was something wrong with the machine for its not taking my card. He took my card and slid it on the glass beside the slider I had been using. Then the machine-lady asked me to scan my goods. The assistant asked if I needed any more help. "No!" I suggested they should program the machine more precise. He smiled and walked away.
It worked well, so I decided to show my husband I could scan the rest faster. I was doing well when the belt suddenly stopped and began to move backward. The machine-lady told me to rescan because of an overload on the belt.

For a moment everybody stopped what he or she was doing and looked my way. So embarrassed was I that I stood there clumsily, feeling the blood rushing to my face. (...open mouthed, watching the machine reject everything I'd scanned over the past few minutes. All the air seemed to disappear and I felt as if the whole world was watching me. I was struck dead with embarrassment, heart beating painfully fast banging against my ribs.) Meanwhile, (the beautiful female voice of the machine broke the awful silence: "Please slide your card on the front glass.") I've had just enough of it and I noticed my husband had that familiar "I told you so" look on her face and then he walked over to the assistant for help who had been turned down by me!

"All right, honey," he jokingly said, a different comfort dawning across his lined face, "it's time for us to sign up for a class (out-of-class tutoring)." Clearly, my husband's bark was really worse than his bite. This experience made me realize that with the development of technology, some of us have been left far behind by new technological devices, even in other fields. It also made me realize that only by learning constantly can we handle our life easily and smoothly. So, I start to make myself more modest and open to everything. It's no more important whether we can calmly meet the challenges of all times. It's our thirst for knowledge and strong belief in keeping pace with times that will make us better for the future!
