Held in August in London very year,the Notting Hillarnival is the largest street festival in Europe. It originated1 1964 as a way for fro-Caribbean communities celebrate their own cultures and traditions.It takes place one August bank holiday weekend in the streets of west London.Most of the residents are immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa.The first carnival was an attempt to now off the steel band musicians who played in Earls Curt in London every weekend. When the bands went through the streets of Notting Hill,they drew black residents out on to the streets, reminding them of the Caribbean homes they had left behind.It was attended by less than 1,000 people in 1964,buts a great success. Havingbeen allowed to hold festivals of their own for a long time,these people could express themselves freely in songs and dances for the first time.
