Mount Qomolangma, meaning “Holy Mother” in Tibetan, is the world’s highest mountain above sea level. No wonder most people consider climbing to its top as one of their biggest achievements. More than 4, 000 climbers, ranging from 13 to 80 years old, have managed to reach the top. Three people from the Sherpa community hold the current record at 21 times each!
You may be surprised at these numbers but that’s just the start of it. Last year, cleanup crews collected as much as 8. 4 tons of garbage from Mount Qomolangma’s North Base Camp in Tibet at 5,150 meters. And in the regions below that level, more than 335 tons of waste was collected. What a sad fact it is that the highest mountain in the world is turning into the highest mountain of trash!
To reverse the trend, the Chinese government recently announced that it had closed the North Base Camp to tourists. From now on, ordinary tourists will only be able to travel as far as Rongbuk Monastery, about 5, 000 meters above sea level. No more than 300 climbers with special permits will be allowed to climb Qomolangma each year. They are supposed to follow stricter rules, including carrying all their waste out with them and only climbing in spring.
Despite these tough measures, it is clear that tourism has caused enormous damage to the natural environment. Mount Qomolangma is not alone. Some popular parks around the world are also struggling to preserve their environments and keep up with increased tourism. Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. has long been troubled by the overflowing trash piles. Joshua Tree National Park suffered a wave of vandalism (破坏), with graffiti sprayed on rocks and ancient trees destroyed. In order to protect the environment, the National Park Service had no choice but to close the park temporarily.
As we can see, the natural environment can be destroyed by human activities in less than five minutes, but it might take hundreds of years to recover. Now it’s time for ordinary tourists to leave “Holy Mother” alone and wait for her to restore her beauty.
24.Why are the figures listed about Qomolangma in paragraph 2
A.To describe it is extremely vast and high. B.To show it is difficult to collect trash there.
C.To indicate it is a popular tourist attraction. D.To illustrate it is suffering serious pollution.
25.What does the underlined word “reverse” mean in paragraph 3
A.Fit with. B.Follow up. C.Turn around. D.Speed up.
26.What is the author likely to support to protect Qomolangma
A.Developing its tourism. B.Reducing human activities.
C.Forbidding any entry in spring. D.Building more base camps.
27.Which section of a newspaper might this article come from
A.Environment. B.Society. C.Tourism. D.Education.

Ingrid Stone is the queen of complaints. The determined woman has written letters of complaint for more than 30 years. And it has become the woman’s campaign against poor service. Ingrid has become one of the most successful complainers in Britain.
“My father and my grandfather have always been people who believe strongly in saying what you think. I think I must have inherited the genes,” says Ingrid. One thing is certain: Ingrid Stone is very good at complaining. “I complain about just anything, but it has to be with good reason. If you are dissatisfied, don’t suffer in silence and just stand up for yourself.”
Over the years, Ingrid has fired off hundreds of complaint letters to companies: Apple (a faulty MacBook), British Airways (delayed flights), and even the makers of a brand of fly paper, which wasn’t sticky enough to trap its victims. Of course, Ingrid has been taken seriously by the companies she has targeted.
Friends have been quick to capitalize on Ingrid’s talent for complaining. They would come to her, whenever they have problems. Her talent for complaining has even landed her a book deal — Letters of a Dissatisfied Woman, a collection of her best letters. It will be published later this year.
But there is one person who is not so impressed by Ingrid’s hobby, her husband. “I think he still gets embarrassed by it,” says Ingrid. “He’s not the complaining sort. In the beginning, if I complained about something in a restaurant, he would be totally shocked. I think he’s accepted it now.”
While Ingrid laughs about her hobby, it is clear she takes it very seriously. “In a sense, I think it’s really very important,” she says. “As consumers, people don’t have the money to spend on bad services and products. Business can’t afford to have bad services and products, because we will just stop using them.”
28.According to the passage, Ingrid Stone ________.
A.has complained to one company for many years B.has written letters of complaint for many years
C.keeps in touch with friends by writing letters D.is the most successful businesswoman in Britain
29.What does the underlined phrase “capitalize on” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Look down upon. B.Make full use of. C.Put up with. D.Say no to.
30.________ seemed to be embarrassed by Ingrid’s hobby of complaining.
A.Her father B.Her grandfather C.Her husband D.Her friends
31.Which of the following statements is TRUE
A.People will see Ingrid’s complaint letters in a book.
B.All companies are not happy with what Ingrid has done.
C.Ingrid has been tired of writing complaint letters.
D.Ingrid Stone is a woman without the sense of right and wrong.

The phrase "The early bird catches the worm" may be true. It means people who wake up early get more done than people who don’t. Another saying is, "Early to bed, early to rise" makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." Scientists have found that people who go to bed before 11: 00 p. m. may do better in life than people who sleep around 2:30 a.m.
The researchers are from Birmingham's Centre for Human Brain Health in the UK. Their research showed that people who slept and rose early (early birds) had an advantage over people who slept and woke up late(night owls). There were differences in the brain function of early birds and night owls.
The scientists tested 38 people in their research. The people answered questionnaires about their sleeping pattern and when they felt tired during the day. They were then put into an early bird or night owl group based on their answers.
All of the people had MRI scans on their brain and did different tests throughout the day. The researchers said there were big differences between the two groups. The early birds said they felt less sleepy and were able to do the tests quicker than the night owls. The researchers said, "Night owls during school have to get up earlier, then they go into work and they have to get up earlier, so they re constantly having to fight against their bad life habits.”

Dear Terry,
I’m so glad to receive your e-mail and learn that you have a strong interest in Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. So, I’m writing to recommend Dream of the Red Chamber to you.
Written by Cao Xueqin, a famous novelist of Qing dynasty, Dream of the Red Chamber is one of the four masterpieces of novels in China. With the thriving and declining of four noble families as the background, it tells the love story between Jia Baoyu and Lindaiyu. Vividly depicting the life at that time, the novel reveals the darkness and corruption of the old society as well as the desire for freedom and is of high artistic value.
The novel is simple, meaningful in language and contains many graceful classical Chinese poems, which is beneficial in improving your Chinese. Besides, reading this novel will definitely help to deepen your understanding of Chinese culture.
As you read, you should pay attention to many characters and complex relationships in Dream of Red Chamber. I sincerely hope that you enjoy reading this novel and can share your feelings and opinions with me.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

Text:10
W: Television is the most significant influence on children in the United States, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children go to school. And, by the time that the average child finishes high school, he or she will have spent 18, 000 hours in front of a television set as opposed to 12, 000 hours in a classroom.
Parents are concerned about these figures and the lack of quality in television programs for children. They are worried the violence in many of these shows may have a negative effect on the young minds. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents are favor of. The most famous of these is “Sesame street (芝麻街(幼儿教育电视节目))”, which tries to give preschool children a head start (获得领先优势) in learning the alphabet and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.
Even though most parents and educators give “Sesame Street” and shows like it high marks for quality, some argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. They say that the habit of watching hours of television a day turns children into bored and passive consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.
