Environmental protection is one of the hottest topics nowadays. It was also something that ancient
Chinese paid great attention to. In fact, the world s earliest environmental protection idea, ministry(部
门) and law were all born in China. How did the ancient Chinese protect the environment
The world s earliest idea of “managing state affairs(政事) through environmental protection”
Xunzi, a famous thinker in the Warring States Period, came up with the idea of “managing state af-
fairs through environmental protection” . He wrote in his book that vegetation(植被) should be protected
well by humans.
Guan Zhong, a government officer 400 years ahead of Xunzi, was also an environmental protection
expert. He said “a king who cannot protect his vegetation is not doing a good job” .
The world s earliest “environmental protection ministry”
Nine ministries set up by Shun, an ancient Chinese emperor, included “Yu”(虞), an environmental
protection ministry. The first “Yu” leader was Boyi, an environmental protection expert. He invented
wells so people could drink clean water. He knew a lot about animals and also called for animal protec-
tion.
The world s earliest “environmental protection law”
Over 4,000 years ago, Dayu, an ancient Chinese water-control expert and also an emperor, made a
rule, not allowing people to cut down trees in March or catch fish in June, because it was the time when
they grew quickly.
65
Almost 3,000 years ago, Tianlü, the first environmental protection law,
appeared in Qin. It recorded many ancient environmental protection rules.
Two of them were interesting: firstly, rivers should not be blocked(堵塞);
secondly, grass and trees should not be burned to be fertilizer(肥料) except
for summer. The second one is inspiring even for today. It can help to keep
air clean and fresh.
1. Practice 根据“ In fact, the world s earliest environmental protect the environment ”以及下文的介
2. considered 根据“Xunzi, a famous thinker protected well by humans. ”可知,战国时期著名思想家
荀子提出了“环保治国”的思想,即治理国家时应该考虑环境保护问题。 consider 意为“考虑”,是
动词,此处是含有情态动词的被动结构,所以此处动词用过去分词形式,故填 considered。
3. improved 根据“The first ‘Yu leader was Boyi, an environmental called for animal protection. ”可
知,第一位“虞”的领导是环保专家伯益。 他发明了水井,这样人们就可以喝到干净的水,即提高
了饮用水的质量。 improve 意为“提高”,动词用过去式,故填 improved。
4. right 根据“Over 4,000 years ago, Dayu, an ancient they grew quickly. ”可知,大禹制定了一条
规则,不允许人们在三月砍伐树木,六月捕鱼,因为这段时间它们都长得很快,即在正确的时间才
能得到木材和鱼。 right 意为“正确的”,形容词,故填 right。
5. smoothly 根据“Tianlü, the first environmental should not be blocked”可知,田律是第一部环境保

Going green isn t just a fad(一时的流行) . Understanding the relationship between a clean environ-
ment and human life is not a new idea. In fact, it was noticed as early as ancient Rome and medieval
Europe. However, it was only in the late 1960s that environmentalism(环保主义) grew to become a
political and grassroots movement, influencing common people around the world.
The movement has been able to influence governments across the world to be responsible towards the
environment in a variety of ways, such as limiting the burning of fossil fuels and managing how harmful
waste is thrown away.
Nowadays,we see how green-living has entered so many areas of our everyday lives, from choosing
the appliances that use less water and energy to using reusable bags instead of plastic bags and even
buying clothes made from recycled sources. For many of us, making small environmentally-conscious(具
有环保意识的) decisions, such as bringing a reusable container to take away food, is how we change our
normal habits one step at a time. However, there is a growing number of people who live a zero waste life-
style and make great changes to the way they live to reduce their carbon emission.
Living a zero waste lifestyle means doing one s best to achieve the aim of not sending anything to a
landfill(垃圾填埋场) . People who accept this lifestyle cut down on their waste by reducing what they
need and want. They reuse what they own and send few things to be recycled.
Despite what this movement is called, experts say true zero waste is difficult to achieve. This is
because waste unavoidably comes about whenever an item is created, transported or repurposed(改换用
途), either through emissions or energy. The idea, really, is to change mindsets and habits to lessen our
negative impact on the environment as far as possible.

As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. However, the briefest look at books and the
movies based on them would have anyone questioning this common saying. All too often, great words end
up being turned into cinematic “ turkeys” .
Good movies need good stories. If so, why has one of the earliest and greatest works in Western
storytelling, Homer s The Odyssey, never had an equally great movie based on it Movies need strong
characters. So why have the movies based on The Great Gatsby, never been praised as “ great”
Movies of course need impressive images, so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies
best described as “ interesting”
One of the key reasons behind this is that while a book usually takes a few days to read, a movie typi-
cally lasts under two hours. This means that great books can lose plot details and characters when they
move to the big screen. Even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can t avoid this. The fans of the
books are disappointed because they don t see some of their favorite characters in the movie versions.
Movies also disappoint us when things don t look the way we imagined them in the books. Take for
example, the epic movie Troy, which is in part based on Homer s The Iliad and was met with mixed
reviews from the audience: Many people questioned the actress who played the part of Helen. They
thought she didn t live up to Helen s title of “ the most beautiful woman in the world” .
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people s eyes. Furthermore, books and movies are two
different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we should judge a
movie in its own right, and not against its original source.
Good Books, Bad Movies
Introduction All too often, people aren t 1 with the movies based on books.
Good stories
2 to good movies Strong characters
Impressive images
Reading 3 than movies, which loses more details.
Reasons behind it
Things in the movies is different from our 4 of the book.
Author s attitude toward it:
As 5 of the same work is different and books and movies are also different, we should judge a movie
in its own right.

Teens are putting on weight. Today most teenagers are at least one size larger than teens were 20
years ago. Did you know that today s small is in fact the medium 20 years ago Why The main reason is
that today s teens are lack of exercise.
A recent research shows 97% of teens need more exercise. It s bad news because too little exercise
means you are missing a lot of good things in life. Exercise helps in two ways.
First, exercise helps your body. Physical activity can help you get a strong body. It can also keep
you at a healthy weight. Doctors say that people who stay at a healthy weight have fewer health problems.
Second, exercise can help your mind. People who get plenty of physical activities might worry less
and sleep better at night. You may even learn better in school. Students who are healthy can listen and
understand better in class.
Also you can change your life and be more active at any point. It s never too late to exercise. An
article called “How to Limit Screen Time and Get Moving” tells us these following things:
Firstly, step away from the screen. Doctors call watching TV or playing video games screen time.
Two hours of screen time a day is enough. You will enjoy life more if you leave it instead of watching it!
Secondly, begin with an easy task. An hour a day can seem like a long time. Start with 10 minutes of
new activities every day, and then 20 minutes, 30 minutes until you have gotten used to it. Think about
walking. Take the stairs instead of the lift. You will feel healthier.
Thirdly, make fitness fun. Find a sport you like. It doesn t need to be some traditional sports, such
as basketball, soccer or baseball. You can also try hiking, skateboarding, or even rope-jumping. Those
are all great sports and if you like them, play them. If you enjoy the sport, keep on it.
Fourthly, be careful about the food you eat. Help your family shop for healthy food. Read the labels
Look for healthy foods. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Stop buying soft drinks and junk foods.
You will feel better if you eat right.
Finally, find a friend or family member to exercise or play with you. You will have more fun and it
helps keep you responsible for going.

Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice
grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. Previous research found positive results on
the use of them. But these apps mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for lan-
guage courses and they only worked as after-school support, so the results weren t always dependable. A
recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out aimed to find out if users can actually learn a lan-
guage with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers a special model where some
content is available for free while some content is not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and
women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level as there is a decrease in users as
their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to
study or live abroad. Female users tend to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Getting any feedback on Busuu depends on whether your answer is correct or not. While it is helpful,
this is not the sort of feedback language teachers prefer, as it does not explain why the answer is right or
wrong. In spite of this, feedback in the app is very highly regarded.
More than 92% of the users surveyed state that the app has met their expectations and 86% speak
very highly of the app. In fact, more than 80% of them strongly agree that using the app has helped them
improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the
users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a
foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar
work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
Language Learning Apps Can Be Helpful
Feature They focused on studies with learners signed up for language courses.
Duolingo and Advantages Create a 1 environment to solve the performance anxiety of learners.
Busuu Students can get more class time for language communication.
Disadvantage They cannot offer a dependable result because they didn t consider users 2 .
Function of Learning materials: Offer 12 different languages. Some of the materials are free.
Busuu Feedback: It depends on 3 . Although it cannot explain why the answer is right or wrong, it is very highly regarded.
Purpose To find out if the app is useful to learn a foreign language.
Study of Half men and half women. Men tend to use it 4 but for 4 than
Busuu users Users women. The reason for using the app: personal interest, or study or live abroad
Result More than 80% of the users surveyed consider it 5 .
Conclusion Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.

Many people have trouble with concentration(注意力) and recall skills. So how to improve your con-
centration and recall skills. There is some advice for you.
The first thing to do is make sure you get the information correct the first time. If you get the bad
information the first time, it s hard to replace it with the correct information. Pay attention to the speaker
carefully so that you get everything right the first time.
Next, make sure that you understand what you are trying to remember. If you do not have any idea
about what something means, you are going to have a very difficult time recalling the information. If you do
not understand something the first time, go over the information again until you understand it completely.
Also, being selective(选择性的) can help you recall information. Instead of trying to recall the
complete conversation that you had with a business partner, concentrate on trying to remember the impor-
tant points. The less information that you have to remember, the easier it will be to recall it at a later
point.
Concentrate on what is important, and try to test yourself as you move forward. If you are reading a
book and want to remember the main theme of every page, test yourself at the end. This will let you know
if you have fully understood the page. If you have trouble recalling the information, read it again.
Finally, remember to write down everything that you have memorized. The second that you leave a
meeting or classroom you may want to translate memory onto paper. This way you can repeatedly study the
information at a later date.

There are many times in a year that a person has to select something for someone, such as on birth-
days, naming ceremonies, weddings or New Year. It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations
in western cultures. Besides, special events, such as one s first day of school or graduation from university,
often require gift giving.
What is happening when we give gifts Most importantly, we are exchanging gifts. If someone gives
me a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday.
Gifts improve personal relationships and provide a way of communication between loved ones. People
say that a gift let the recipients(接受者) know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make them
happy and feel special. We want people to feel wanted, and to feel part of our social or family group. We
also give presents to express “Thanks. ” or “ I m sorry. ” But sometimes it is difficult for us to find a
present that someone will like. So we may just give things that we like or would feel comfortable with.
People tend to talk about presents in a loving way. A woman whose mother died years ago described
the gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given to her over the years. “ I appreciate
them, and they mean something to me,” the woman said. “Because I remember when they were given to
me, that they were from my mother and that the relationship we ve had. The gifts often reminded me of my
mother. ” This woman felt the same way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that the recipients
would look at her gifts in years to come and remember her.
Emotions like these suggest that the value of giving gifts lies in the positive spirits it has. They prove
that it is wrong to say that modern western gift giving is just a waste of things. Studies in Canada and else-
where have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique(独特的), even if so many of gifts are
given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very reason for the tradition to continue.

Procrastination(拖延) is like a voice in your head giving you several reasons to avoid doing some-
thing. Usually it s difficult to overcome it. So why not ask some questions to give you practical solutions
What should I start with
Sometimes we re faced with projects so big that we don t know where to start. Once you actually begin
working on a task, it doesn t feel as bad as you imagined it would.
By asking yourself what you can do to take the first meaningful step, you can divide the project into
smaller parts, then pick the simplest one to start on. If you begin focusing just on that, you will possibly
have more motivation(动机) to keep going.
What are my first three biggest things today
Each morning, list down three tasks you need to finish today. Spend the first few hours of your day
focusing on those. Only when they re done should you continue to do your other work.
How can I make it easier
Often, many of us believe that success needs hard work. But sometimes that belief stop us from
finding simple solutions to big challenges. It isn t a shame to make something difficult easier for
yourself to complete. For example, you might not have time to exercise for an hour every day. So
start by exercising for just 10 minutes each day. After all, small steps lead to big changes. The key
is to turn to the easier alternative(替代方案) and stick to it regularly.
What s the result of procrastination
Ask yourself what you might lose if you delay any further. And don t focus just on the short-term
influence. Strongly remind yourself of the long-term influence that comes from habitual(习惯性的) pro-
crastination.
The truth is that all successful people have a tendency(趋势) to procrastinate. The key is what steps
you take to start getting things done. And sometimes that s all about asking the right questions.
Four Questions to Help You Stop Procrastination
Introduction Procrastination is difficult to deal with, since it 1 you 1 several reasons to put off doing something.
