Anil froze when he saw the poster at school. Culinary Academies of America presents Junior Cooking Camp. He had to go! But he needed money to get there.
So, the next morning on Saturday, Anil started to make cookies. Then he put the cookies into bags. Last he wrote Anil’s Cookies on each bag.
“Now,” Anil said, “I’ll make my dream come true.” He knocked door-to-door, trying to sell the cookies. He told each neighbor, “I need money for the cooking camp. I want to be a chef.” “Just bought some cookies,” one neighbor said. “On a diet,” the next one said. “No money,” the third admitted.
After Anil came home with a lot of good luck wishes but no money, his grandma, Nana, suggested him to drive to John’s Indian Grocery Store.
“Cookies ” Mr. John waved his hand. “No sweets. Too many sweets.” He pointed toward some shelves with desserts from India.
“But those are canned,” Nana argued. “These are fresh!”
“It takes too long to make a fresh paratha (flat bread) and aloo (potato) nowadays.” Mr. John shrugged (耸肩).
Anil went back home with Nana. He didn’t want to give up his dream. He thought about how traditional paratha shapes were so boring. Circles, triangles, nothing fun. Why couldn’t he use cookie cutters on paratha dough As he worked, Nana picked up his parathas one by one. “A car. A cat. A flower What kind of parathas dough are these ” After some silence, she said, “I should like eating the cat.” “Maybe other people will like them, too.” Anil said.
Anil hoped the Indian store would buy some. So they cooked the parathas and brought them to John. He tore off (撕下) a piece of paratha and put into his mouth.
“These are more fun for kids.” Anil said.
“Parathas for kids ” John slowly nodded his head. “Something new. And delicious. We’ll try them.”
A few days later, John called Anil.

Did you know that some people don’t do their reading assignments It’s shocking, but it’s true. Some students don’t even read short texts that they are assigned (布置) in class. There are many reasons for this. They may be distracted or bored. They may be unwilling to focus. They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here’s why.
Reading stimulates (刺激) your mind. It is like a workout for your brain. When people are old, their muscles begin to get weaker and their strength leaves them. Exercise can prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people’s brains when they get older. Brain power and speed decline with age. Reading strengthens your brain and prevents these declines.
You can benefit from reading in the near-term too. Reading provides knowledge. Knowledge is power. Therefore, reading can make you a more powerful person. You can learn to do new things by reading. Do you want to make video games Do you want to design clothing Reading can teach you all this and more. But you have to get good at reading, and the only way to get good at something is to practice.
Read everything that you can at school, regardless of whether you find it interesting. Reading expands your vocabulary. Even a “boring” text can teach you new words. Having a larger vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to speak, write, and think more intelligently. What’s boring about that
Do not just discount pay attention to a text because it is unfamiliar (不熟悉的) to you. Each time you read, you are exposed to new ideas and perspectives (视角). Reading can change the way that you understand the world. It can give you a wider perspective on things. It can make you worldlier. You can learn how people live in far away places. You can learn about cultures different from your own.
Reading is good for your state of mind. It has a calming effect. It can lower your stress levels and help you relax. You can escape from your troubles for a moment when you read, and it’s a positive escape. So do yourself a favor: the next time you get a reading assignment, take as much as you can from it. Squeeze it for every drop of knowledge that it has. Then move on to the next one.
27.The writer advises you to read everything at school because ________.
A.you will love it if you read it enough

B.you will feel bored after you think more intelligently
C.reading helps you perform on tests and get into top schools
D.reading widens your perspective and makes you a better person
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.Reading: Good for the Mind in Many Ways
B.Reading: The Key to a Successful Future
C.Reading: Improve Your Vocabulary and Grades

Did you know that humans aren’t the only species (物种) that use language Bees communicate by dancing. Whales talk to each other by singing. And some apes talk to humans by using American Sign Language.
A female gorilla, Koko, was born at the San Francisco Zoo on July 4th, 1971. Koko learned sign language from her trainer, Dr. Penny Patterson. Patterson began teaching sign language to Koko in 1972, when Koko was one year old. Koko must have been a good student, because two years later she moved onto the Stanford University campus with Dr. Patterson. Koko continued to learn on the campus until 1976. That’s when she began living full-time with Patterson’s group, the Gorilla Foundation. Patterson and Koko’s relationship has blossomed ever since.
Dr. Patterson says that Koko has mastered sign language and known over 1,000 words, and that Koko makes up new words. For example, Koko didn’t know the sign for ring, so she signed the words finger and bracelet. Dr. Patterson thinks that this shows meaningful and constructive use of language.
Not everyone agrees with Dr. Patterson. Some argue that apes like Koko do not understand the meaning of what they are doing. Some people who don’t believe that say that these apes are just performing complex tricks (戏法). For example, if Koko points to an apple and signs red or apple, Dr. Patterson will give her an apple. They argue that Koko does not really know what the sign apple means. She only knows that that if she makes the right motion, one which Dr. Patterson has shown her, then she gets an apple. The debate is unresolved, but one thing is for certain: Koko is an extraordinary ape.
It seems like Patterson and Koko have a good relationship, but not everyone agrees with it. Some people believe that Patterson is humanizing the ape. They think that apes should be left in the most natural state possible. Even Dr. Patterson struggles with these feelings. When she was asked if her findings could be duplicated by another group of scientists, she said, “We don’t think that it would be ethical (道德的) to do again.” She went on to argue that animals should not be kept in such unnatural circumstances.
As for the future, Dr. Patterson and the Gorilla Foundation would love to get Koko to an ape preserve (保护区) in Maui, but they are having trouble getting the land. So unless you have a few million dollars to spare, Koko’s going to be spending her time in Woodland, California with Dr. Patterson. Koko probably doesn’t mind that. If she moved to Hawaii, she’d have to give up her Facebook page and Twitter feed, and she’s got like 50 thousand “likes”. Some may deny (否认) that she knows sign language, but nobody says that she doesn’t know social networking.
30.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the second paragraph
A.To describe the environment in which Koko lives.
B.To tell readers how Dr. Patterson developed Koko’s living skills.
C.To advise Patterson to free Koko after she learnt on the campus.
D.To make an introduction about Koko and Dr. Patterson’s background.
31.What do we know from the passage
A.Koko has mastered sign language without a doubt.
B.Everybody likes how Dr. Patterson has raised Koko.
C.Some people think that Koko only signs to get food.
D.The Gorilla Foundation has got a land for Koko to stay naturally.
32.What does the underlined word “duplicated” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A.To disagree with someone. B.To fool them.
C.To copy something. D.To be disproven through debate.
33.Which may be the main idea of this passage
A.Bees, whales, and apes like Koko all use language to communicate.
B.Koko uses sign language but some think it’s just a trick.
C.It is natural for gorillas to learn sign language like humans.
D.If you want a lot of “likes” on Facebook, get a talking gorilla.

I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not receive Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought, “What would I say when the other kids asked what I’d got ” Just when I started to accept that there would not be a Christmas that year, three women turned up at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll. I felt so relaxed that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to school. I wasn’t forgotten. Somebody had thought enough of me to bring me a gift.
Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my first Christmas there special and memorable, I suddenly remembered the women’s visit. I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of importance for as many children as I could possibly reach.
So I came up with a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans (孤儿) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys, clothes, and school supplies, each with a child’s name. We wanted all of them to know they were special. Before I called out their names and handed them their gifts, I reminded them that they couldn’t open their presents until every child had come forward.
Finally the moment they were expecting came as I called out, “One, two, three. Open your presents!” As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed (笑容满面) and their bright smiles lit up the room. The joy in the room was obvious, and it wasn’t just about toys. It was a feeling—the feeling I knew from that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn’t forgotten. Somebody thought of me. I matter.

Are we addicted to technology
Technology has become a main part of our lives. It has changed our lives in many ways. In many ways, it makes life more convenient for us: we can send messages quickly by the internet, cook meals in a few minutes in a microwave, and book train tickets online instead of walking to the station. However, in our increasingly technology-driven world, have we become addicted(上瘾的) to technology
Not too long ago, many children enjoyed reading a good book in their spare time. Nowadays, teens are more likely to be seen playing video games or watching television. Some people even say they can’t go without watching their favourite TV programme—which is a bit extreme(偏激的)!
Similarly, sending letters has become a thing of the past. It has been replaced by e-mail, instant messaging and social media. I think this is a huge shame; for me, there’s nothing better than receiving a letter in the post. It shows someone has taken the time to sit down and write something; this is much more personal than a conversation online. For some people— especially the older generation—new methods of communication aren’t so easy to use. I regularly send letters and postcards to my grandma to keep her updated with my life in France; I also send them to my boyfriend and sister.
The presence of social media has, in some respects, turned us into anti-social beings. Instead of meeting up with friends and seeing them face-to-face, we now spend a lot of time communicating online. Although online communication has its advantages—notably, enabling us to keep in touch with loved ones in different countries—we shouldn’t forget the value of real-life human interaction. It is, after all, in our nature to socialise with others!
Actually, I spend a lot of time using technology. I rely on the internet and my laptop to plan lessons for my classes. I use wifi on my phone to send messages via apps such as Viber and Snapchat. That said, when I’m on holiday it is nice to switch it all off and have a break. Taking a break from technology is liberating.
27.What does the writer mainly tell us in writing the second paragraph
A.Fewer children enjoy reading books now.
B.What changes children’s reading habit.
C.How addicted some teens become to technology nowadays.
D.More and more teens like amusing themselves by technology.
28.From the passage we can know that ________.
A.the writer prefers letters to e-mails
B.e-mails will take place of letters
C.technology has little influence on our lives
D.the writer is not ready to use technology
29.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To encourage us to keep in touch with loved ones face-to-face.
B.To suggest us to communicate online as little as possible.
C.To advise us to free us from technology sometimes.
D.To expect us to interact a lot with others in society.
As scientists, we wonder all the time. That curiosity is what keeps us excited about our work and asking and trying to find out details about the world around us. Often, in science, the real answer is usually far from obvious. Innovation(a new idea, method) and invention is often done when we look deep below the surface and ask ourselves “why did this happen ” or “why isn’t this the result I expected ”
Curiosity is one of the greatest strengths we own. All the best scientists in the world share this curiosity for the world around them. Never accepting what seems obvious, we can always look deeper into and more thoroughly at a problem.
That curiosity allows us opportunities that we wouldn’t have if we just accepted the results and never asked “why ”. When we look at the reasons behind a process and think about the ways in which we could apply this elsewhere, we begin the process of discovery and invention. That’s exactly how many of the major historical discoveries in science came about.
One of the coolest examples of this is in the creation of penicillin(青霉素). In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin and shortly after proved its effects as an antibiotic(抗生素). The problem was, it needed to be mass-produced in order to be a reliable pharmaceutical(制药的) product. Through the serious curiosity of scientists, it was finally discovered that the best type of penicillin for production was on a moldy cantaloupe in Peoria Market in 1943.
If it wasn’t for a worldwide search and many inquisitive scientists, that discovery may have never been made. Because of this curiosity, countless lives have been saved by penicillin and the antibiotics that have since followed.
Even in your everyday life, curiosity is a powerful tool for everyday learning and opportunity. Take the folks behind Park & Diamond, for example. They took something we come into contact every day, bike helmets, and asked themselves, “ Can we make it foldable(可折叠的) and therefore more accessible ” That led them to create a foldable helmet, a truly innovative product that can save lives — due in part to asking questions and seeking a better way.
Our very own Alan Sentman said, “Science as a field is completely based on curiosity. Science at its basic core is a framework of processes to observe ‘everything’ with a goal of understanding how it works.” We think that sums it up pretty well. Any experiment or measurement that does not go as planned is not a failure; that experiment is an opportunity to learn why it turned out the way it did.
Here at Polymer Solutions, innovation comes when we are at our most curious. Without curiosity, we might be tempted to just accept things on a surface level and never dig deeper. But that doesn’t drive great science.
When has curiosity paid off in your world

The Boy Made It!
One Sunday, Nicholas, teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a heavy snowstorm swept over the area. Unable to see far, he turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic (惊慌). He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter (躲避) from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could-he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas survived this snowstorm because of a TV show. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each programme of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is left in a wild area and has to find his way out.
When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

C.A nearby stream. D.The tips he learned.
I have been dancing since I was 14 years old, when my best friend dragged me to an after-school dance class. I enjoyed that dance class so much that have been dancing ever since. After every dance class, however, I always have to stretch out my legs and back, as dancing can be quite a tough workout! It feels like as much exercise as a contact sport or going to the gym—but dancing is not widely considered to be a sport. Does the fact that dancing is expressive and artistic mean that it is not a sport
Many dancers would argue that dancing is a sport, as it requires great physical stamina (耐力), strong muscles and impressive flexibility. No matter what style of dance you are participating in, you will always be using all of your muscles while dancing and this can often be for several hours day. Additionally, in the more traditional dance styles (such as ballet and contemporary dance), men often lift their female dance partners way up in the air. The strength that dancers need means that they are often just as athletic as footballers, runners or swimmers.
On the other hand, many people argue that dance is an art form. Dances often show emotion, portray characters and tell stories. Dancing to music is creative and visually appealing to the eyes and ears, just like watching a play or a professional orchestra. The glittery costurnes, the stage make-up and the big hairstyles are artistic and imaginative. It is easy to see why many people consider dance to be an art form.
I personally believe that dance is both a sport and an art. I believe that a great dancer will be a mixture of an athlete and an artist. You could have the strongest muscles in the world but not necessarily be a great dancer. Likewise, you could be a great actress who can portray emotions easily but you still might not be able to dance.
However, whether you consider dance to be an art or a sport, the important thing is to enjoy it! Dancing is great way to make new friends and it’s a really fun way to exercise!
27.Many people think dance is an art because a dancer ________.
A.acts like in a play while they dance
B.should be as strong as a runner
C.doesn’t show a traditional style
D.usually performs on a prepared stage
28.What’s the fourth paragraph mainly about
A.Why the writer thinks dance is both a sport and an art.
B.What a great dancer does before success.
C.How you can become a famous actress.
D.What the writer experiences before she becomes a mixture.
29.The writer wants to _________ by the text.
A.make sure which dance is, a sport or an art
B.ask us to enjoy dancing no matter what it is
C.tell the difference between a sport and an art
D.make more friends when we dance
Mobile phones have changed the way we communicate, but people disagree on whether the devices are useful tools for education.
Students can be easily distracted by their phones during class. Are they listening to the teacher or texting their friends Are they taking a picture of a quiz to cheat
School officials, teachers and parents are all trying to find out the best way to supervise students’ use of mobile or cellphones.
In the Canadian province of Ontario, officials are restricting (限制) phone use during teaching time. However, there are exceptions for classroom activities, health and other emergencies.
France passed a law in 2018 banning (禁止) the use of cellphones in schools for students up to age 15, the age when they go to high school.
Last July, a new law was signed in California. It says state public and charter schools can ban students from using smart phones in class and at school. It does not, however, say schools are required to completely ban the devices. There are exceptions, which include emergencies or problems related to health.
So, the officials turned to technology for answers. San Mateo High School now locks up cell phones during the day in a special container. Each student must put his phone away in small bag with a kind of lock. At the end of the day, students unlock the bag with a device.
Other schools are choosing simpler answers to the problem—they ban cellphones in classrooms. “They wanted to provide a clean break for students and not have the frenetic energy that can happen if kids start texting each other or social-media posts start going,” Behm said.
Education Week found that more than 30 schools, and in some cases school districts, have put in place some kind of restrictions during the current or last school year. Districts across the country also have their own ways of phone restrictions both formal or informal.
Toth said students have grown up with cellphones, and “it is our responsibility to teach them correct use for tools within the classroom.” He added that schools are teaching about cellphones and how to use them with social media and the Internet.
“It is part of changing education for kids,” he said, “as long as we teach them to use them responsibly.”
The technology is here, Toth said, schools should use it to help students, and not fear it.
30.From the passage we can know _________.
A.the students in Ontario aren’t allowed to use mobile phones
B.a high school student can use cellphones in schools in France now
C.bringing smart phones to school breaks the new law in California
D.most people think mobile phones are useful for school education
31.The writer probably agrees ________.
A.students should be banned from using smart phones at any time
B.teachers shouldn’t return students’ cellphones during class break
C.each school finds its own way of cellphone restriction
D.teachers should face the cellphone problem and teach its correct use to them
32.The underlined word “frenetic” probably means ________ in Paragraph 8.
A.wild B.worried C.peaceful D.anxious
33.Which of the following may be the best title of the passage
A.Should Schools Ban Mobile Phones B.Do We Need to Change Our Ideas
