The incident took place, believe it or not, on the playground. I was something of a football player, but I had never been a good player, far less a great one. I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. The result was that, though I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm, I was never picked for my college team.
Let me confess frankly that this was only because there was another player in the same position who happened to be much better than me. I considered myself the better sportsman, but he was certainly the greater player. So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait and bide my time.
And at last my patience was rewarded. It was for me a very special day. Our team had shot up into the final and was meeting its rival(竞争对手). Our star-player sent word at the last moment that he was ill and he could not take the field. Imagine the astonishment in the college camp! The thought was that the game was as good as lost, and so also, I confess, did I for this player was our trump card(王牌): That is what everybody always said. However, something had to be done, and that something had to be myself! The captain called me up almost apologetically for having failed to recognize my greatness before, and—there I was, on the playground, greeted by the cheers of my friends, and a few jeers from those who had little faith in my prowess.
I can tell you that I played like a demon(魔鬼). I was here, there and everywhere—now leading the attack, now falling back to help the defense. It was indeed a thrilling moment in my life. For a time, I was the center of all attention, the object of universal applause, and "the observed of all observers". And, believe it or not, it was I who put in the winning goal. It marked the top of a glorious day. Even now I look back on the episode with unmixed pleasure and satisfaction.

Have you ever escaped taking on a role or opportunity because you didn't feel confident enough Perhaps the voice in your head asked: "Why me I am not yet ready, not capable enough, or don't have enough experience."
If you can relate, you're among the majority of women with whom I've worked. I recently asked more than 120 women, from areas including the U.S., UK, Australia, Georgia, Italy, India, Jamaica, and Bermuda: If you've ever avoided risks, what factors and reasons contributed to this More than 70% reported that self-doubt, or not having enough belief in themselves, their capabilities, or their skills, was a driving factor.
As one well-known executive told me: "Every day I doubt myself. I doubt that I am good enough to be where I am."
This shouldn't come as a surprise. We know self-doubt is a pervasive and often paralyzing concern, particularly for women. A study by psychologists at Cornell and Washington State highlighted higher levels of self-doubt in women. Research has also shown that women will apply for a job only if they meet all of the qualifications, while men will apply when they fulfill only 60%. Another recent study identified a considerable gender gap when it comes to self-promotion, with women providing less favorable assessments of their own past performance and potential future ability. Ultimately, men take more chances on themselves, and that pays dividends in the long run.
While this pattern of self-doubt emerged again and again in studies, my interactions, and my client work, I also noticed another commonality: These women's self-doubts weren't sabotaging their success. The vast majority of successful women leaders I've interviewed and coached have built exciting and satisfying careers even while facing self-doubt.
What these women also had in common is courage in the absence of confidence—a trait that is often weaponized against women and used to explain why they fail to achieve career goals. My work has found that successful women take decisive action to move forward even while grappling with fears and doubts and questioning their own "readiness".
"As women, we often feel like we have to be 100% ready in order to move forward. But, if you are 50% or 75% there, jump. Just do it," said Megan Costello, former executive director of the Boston Mayor's Office for Women's Advancement.
28. What is the real factor for women to escape taking on a role
A. Higher risks. B. Different beliefs.
C. Inner feelings. D. Related experiences.
29. What is typical of women in terms of self-promotion
A. They tend to be less optimistic.
B. They prefer to be well qualified.
C. They try to be favorably assessed.
D. They hope to be clearly identified.
30. Which can best replace the underlined word "sabotaging" in Paragraph 5
A. Promoting. B. Weakening. C. Achieving. D. Balancing.
31. How do women with self-doubts succeed
A. They should be courageous and decisive.
B. They should keep themselves unprepared.
C. They should stop questioning their careers.
D. They should learn from famous executives.

A new study analyzing stone tools from southern China provides the earliest evidence of rice harvesting, dating to as early as 10,000 years ago. The researchers identified two methods of harvesting rice, which helped start rice domestication(家庭种植).
To harvest rice, some sort of tools would have been needed. "For quite a long time, one of the puzzles has been that harvesting tools have not been found in southern China from the early Neolithic period or New Stone Age (10,000-7,000 Before Present)—the time period when we know rice began to be domesticated" says lead author Jiajing Wang, an assistant professor of anthropology at Dartmouth.
"However, when archaeologists (考古学家) were working at several early Neolithic sites in the Lower Yangtze River Valley, they found a lot of small pieces of stone, which had sharp edges that could have been used for harvesting plants."
"Maybe some of those small stone pieces were rice harvesting tools, which is what our results show."
In the Lower Yangtze River Valley, the two earliest Neolithic culture groups were the Shangshan and Kuahuqiao.
The researchers examined 52 flaked (成薄片的) stone tools from the Shangshan and Hehuashan sites, the latter of which was occupied by Shangshan and Kuahuqiao cultures.
To determine if the stone flakes were used for harvesting rice, the team conducted use-wear and phytolith residue (植物化石残渣) analyses.
For the use-wear analysis, micro-scratches (划痕) on the tools' surfaces were examined under a microscope. The results showed that 30 flakes have use-wear patterns similar to those produced by harvesting siliceous (silica-rich) plants, likely including rice.
Through the phytolith residue analysis, the researchers analyzed the microscopic residue left on the stone flakes known as "phytoliths" (silica skeletons of plants). They found that 28 of the tools contained rice phytoliths.
"What's interesting about rice phytoliths is that rice husk and leaves produce different kinds of phytolith, which enabled us to determine how the rice was harvested," says Wang.
The findings from the use-wear and phytolith analyses illustrated that two types of rice harvesting methods were used—"finger-knife" and "sickle" techniques. Both methods are still used in southern China today.
32. What is the long-lasting puzzle about southern China
A. It has a history of 10,000 years.
B. It produces many harvesting tools.
C. Rice could hardly grow in that area.
D. Rice harvesting never occurred there.
33. In what tone do the researchers talk about their findings
A. Certain. B. Cautious. C. Critical. D. Correct.
34. On what basis is the use-wear analysis carried out
A. How the stones were used. B. What was left on the stones.
C. When the stones were used. D. Whether the tools were used.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Asian countries are promoting harvesting methods.
B. Only two harvesting methods are still used in China.
C. Rice domestication existed in southern China long ago.
D. "Finger-knife" and "sickle" are very advanced techniques.
Exercise is important in all phases of life, but for seniors, it's crucial to maintaining independence. Exercise ensures that seniors can get around and continue to do the things they enjoy and helps to prevent serious health conditions. (1)

OK everyone, gather round me. Make sure you're drinking plenty of juice and you're going to need it. Look, we started well and we got the first goal, but now we're two goals down. We have everything to play for in the second half. They've received a lot more yellow cards and they're playing aggressively, so they might get a man sent off if we are lucky. But let's not wait for that to happen. I want you to go out there and teach them a lesson they'll never forget. You're the home team. You're the better team. And I know you can come back from this. They've spent more money than us, but that doesn't make them a team. I know we've lost Paul because of his damaged knee, but we will never be beaten. You need to work together as a team. Track back when they're on the attack and attack them. Make sure you are passing the ball. Keep your head up to see where your teammates are. Right, the referee is about to blow the whistle. Good luck out there guys.
