阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
April Fools’ Day
Nat woke early and jumped out of bed. Today was the best day of the year for him. Nat loved to play tricks, and today was April Fools’ Day.
Some of Nat’s tricks were big hits. Last year, he short-sheeted his sister’s bed. She couldn’t understand what was going on and started to think that her legs must have grown much longer during the day. When she realized what had happened, she laughed her head off.
Some of Nat’s tricks were not so successful. Mom didn’t think finding a furry toy mouse in the fridge was humorous at all. After she calmed down a bit, she said, “That’s it! There’s a ban on Nat tricks for two weeks.”
Nat was also the class clown. He was always making jokes in class. He liked it when he made the other kids laugh. Since it was April Fools’ Day, he felt like he had to come up with something really good to provide his classmates with some really good entertainment.
For that, Nat thought long and hard before he came up with his brilliant idea. He bought two toy frogs which were made out of green plastic and looked very realistic. Nat knew just the trick he would play on his classmates.
Nat arrived at school early. To succeed in his plan, he needed to get into the classroom before anyone else. Nat’s class had a rainforest terrarium (饲养皿). It had plants, insects, and three frogs in it. Nat’s idea was to pretend that the frogs had escaped. He knew that Ms. Lopez, his teacher, wasn’t afraid of frogs but several of his classmates, including himself, were.
Nat slipped into the classroom. Good! There was nobody here. He put one of the toy frogs on the floor, near the terrarium and the other on his friend Stacey’s desk. Nat knew that Stacey really didn’t not like frogs. Also, she played a great trick on him last April Fools’ Day. To make his trick more convincing, Nat pushed the lid of the terrarium open. Then he rushed off to morning gathering.

【答案】
When the students got back to class, no one noticed the frogs at first. Then Stacey, who finally noticed the frog, screamed and pointed at her desk. The whole class exploded. A couple of other kids leapt out of their seats and shrieked while the rest were laughing and banging their desks. Nat was feeling very pleased with himself. His trick was definitely a success. But he knew he had to hide his glee. He pretended that he was working and reached out for a piece of paper. It was then that something cold and wet slithered past his fingers. It was a frog-a real one!
Nat realized that he had opened the terrarium. Suddenly, there came a loud croak from under his chair. Nat almost jumped out of his skin with fright. Now he became the laughingstock of the class. What scared him even more was the only person who remained serious-Ms. Lopez. She calmly walked down the aisle, scooped up the frog and put it back into the terrarium. Then she came to Nat’s side, seemingly waiting for his confession. Nat felt his face burning and apologized to Ms Lopez. He also promised to be considerate from then on.

2.【重庆市万州二高2023年高三2月试题】
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day last December, Flores Gonzalez, the mother of a four-year old girl Luna, came up with the idea of having the girl send a letter to Santa by balloon, saying that Santa would grab the balloon while he flew through the air on his sled.
The girl was excited. Flores helped her compose the letter, writing down all the things she dreamed Santa might bring her, and then put the notes into festive red balloons. Flores then took her outside to release the wish to the universe. “Bye, balloon!” the girl called waving as the balloon floated away, sailing above the trees and into the sky.
Some days later, Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana when something drew his attention. Caught in a fallen tree, it looked like litter. But Bamburg couldn’t help picking it up. “God just told me” he said.
As Bamburg approached, he saw that the object was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child’s Christmas wish list.
“Dear Santa” the handwritten note read. “My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll, puppy, My Little Pony. With love Luna.”
Bamburg’s heart pounded in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scene. “Years ago,” he says,“classes at school released balloons with notes. I’ve always wanted to find one.” He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he was going to make Luna’s wish come true too. He just wasn’t sure how. Liberal, Kansas, is more than 350 miles from Grand Cane, Louisiana. But Bamburg’s wife, Lee Ann, was not discouraged by the distance. As a keen Internet user, she had seen other people find all sorts of connections on the Internet and thought it might help her husband find Luna.

【答案】
Alvin also thought it was a good idea. He posted a photo of the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender. Just in a few hours, the number of people sharing her post creep into the hundreds. People from all over the world were asking if they, too, could be part of fulfilling the wish list. “My hope grew into expectations,” Alvin says. “I knew we were going to find Luna.” Still, there was one wish on the list that couldn’t go in the box: A puppy. Alvin had hoped to get every last item on that list. So he tried to search and found a perfect one in the end.
Several days later, the couple got out of the car with presents in front of the girl’s house. Alvin let the puppy run to the excited girl, who exclaimed with delight when she learned it was hers. Tears filling her eyes, Flores offered the Bamburgs her heartfelt gratitude. It seemed that the balloon broke at just the right moment to fulfill a child’s Christmas wish and brought two faraway families together.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
Tyler, my son, has a passion for playing basketball. He always asks me to take him to the gym an hour before practice begins. I often have to convince him to leave the gym after practice is over. Despite not being the most talented player, he still won two trophies (奖杯), one for his team, second place and the other for himself, a special award.
The story of winning the two trophies began when he was ten years old. The first game of the season arrived. The gym was surprisingly crowded. I saw the happy look in my son’s eyes when he saw me sitting in the stands.
As I watched the other kids running up and down the court, I saw my son sitting on the bench. By the fourth quarter, Tyler hadn’t even touched the ball, and his team had won the game.
The games that followed were pretty much the same. The team kept winning, but Tyler barely touched the ball. He ran so hard when he was on the court, but when he got the ball, he would quickly throw it to a teammate. I would sit there with my heart pounding out of my chest.
On the way home from one of his games, I asked, “Tyler, do you still enjoy basketball ”
He replied, “I like basketball a lot. But I know that some of the kids play better than me, so when I get the ball, I just throw it to them. We are on the same team. It doesn’t matter who scores.”
Weeks of Tyler’s unending enthusiasm and devotion to basketball flew by. Never discouraged, he played hard and kept practicing. I watched him improve. He told me how proud he was to be on such a good team. They were undefeated until last Saturday.
It was the final, their toughest game yet. They played well but the other team were just too strong for them. The championship was slipping out of their reach. Tyler’s teammates started to lose heart.

As for Tyler, it seemed that the intense situation didn’t affect his movement. While Tyler didn’t score much, his passion inspired the team to focus on the game, not the result. He tried hard to grab the ball and throw it to others. I could see the players were encouraged by his devotion and it gave a lift to the team. Finally, Tyler’s team came in second place. Towards the end of the ceremony, the host announced there was a special award for a very special player.
Paragraph 2:
“The Sportsmanship Award goes to Tyler Marsden!”, the host added in the awards ceremony. Seeing his astonished look, I felt tears welling up in my eyes. The images of his efforts flooded to my mind. He showed up every game with a positive attitude. He knew his place while playing, and his teammates spoke highly of him. The other kids were congratulating him when Tyler walked over and picked up his second trophy. His positive attitude and perseverance certainly earned everyone’s respect.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On Saturday, we gathered at the hall to witness the award ceremony for the senior scouts (童子军). Receiving an award on such a day was a great honor for any scout, and all desired to be the scout selected to give the summary of the year’s activities for the association.
I was not the one selected to give the summary and for that, I was grateful. I could hardly stand in front of a large crowd to make a speech, but Sean could. He was selected to do the honor because he was the President of the Boy Scouts for schools. My job was much simpler. Being the Vice-President, I was very much behind the scenes, content to ensure that everything was in smooth running order.
It was an hour to go before the ceremony began, and I had put the finishing touches to the stage. Walking down the stage, I saw my teammates in a state of panic. When they saw me, they ran to me to tell me that Sean met with a traffic accident and would not make it to the award ceremony. Someone else had to give the summary. All of them looked hopefully at me, and I could feel my knees beginning to collapse.
All their arguments against my unwillingness were valid. I had a copy of the speech as well as the benefit of having seen Sean rehearse (排练) it. I was the Vice-President and therefore should take his place. Finally, I was firmly told not to decline any longer and they said that they were convinced that I would do the right thing. I sank down onto the floor, totally shocked by the situation.
I knew I was not a confident speaker, and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. To think that the fame of the scouts would take a beating because of me! The burden of responsibility troubled me greatly.

【答案】
But there was really no way out of the situation. In the end, I quickly rehearsed the speech and got ready to go on stage for the presentation. I looked calm and collected but inside, I was a trembling mass of jelly. Although they kept encouraging me, I still felt very worried that my poor performance would cost us the opportunity to win an award. Not long after, I was called to do the presentation. Having butterflies in my stomach, I walked onto the stage.
As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently. My face turned pale, and my mind went blank. I could not remember what I was supposed to say. I was at a loss what to do when I saw my teammates smiling at me with trustful looks. It was then that I realized that I should try my best for our team. Instantly, I reorganized my thoughts, and proceeded to speak into the microphone. When I was finished, all my teammates stood up and applauded loudly.

6.【湖南省长沙一中2023年高三试题】
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Stealing a Christmas tree is something that isn’t done every day. The motivation and timing were different.
I was a strong and determined boy aged 9 when Dad took sick and left Mom and me suddenly. Meanwhile, the Great Depression hit the country, but it made no difference to us. Since Mom was an invalid (病弱者),our existence depended on kind-hearted neighbors and my marvelous talent for survival.
I sold newspapers on street corners and occasionally picked up a bottle of milk from some front porch, a pie from a pantry window, or fruit from neighborhood trees.
During the first Christmas season without Dad, I got caught up in the yuletide (圣诞节期间) spirit. Like any other young boy, I enjoyed the holiday sights and sounds. My anticipation was high, but deep down in my heart was the fact that the man in the red suit skipped right over our little shack (木屋) and stopped only at houses with fireplaces. Meantime, there would be no considerable nice things to eat under the tree. Actually, there would be no tree. At least, a tree would ease the hurt. I resolved to “steal” a Christmas tree on Christmas Day and hurried to Mr. Peterson’s store.
I figured out that since the store was closed and the unsold trees were usually thrown away, I was starting fair game. As I prowled (潜行) among the snow-dusted trees beside the store, old man Peterson popped out of nowhere, yelling serious threats and chasing me away.
Nels Peterson was an old and mean bachelor. The following year, he installed a fence around the Christmas tree lot and locked the gate every night. I accepted the challenge-when people were bathed in the warm glow of family togetherness, I climbed the ladder that hugged the store wall and successfully stole one tree. Next year, the ladder was removed. Ultimately, it seemed that the minute he saw me, Mr. Peterson would chase me away.
Then came a Christmas that I shall always remember with fondness and warmth. My teacher at school involved our class in making a Christmas card for our favorite person, not including our family members.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I planned to make an impressive card for Nels Peterson. Why I included him as my favourite person remained a mystery. Maybe, it was a way to make up for stealing his thrown-away trees. On the card, a magnificently decorated tree was pasted up with trimmings(装饰材料), symbolizing the best wishes to the lonely man. As I worked on it, my enthusiasm was increasing with my belief that it might be the only card he would get from anybody. Having finished the card reading best wishes and a brief introduction to myself, I signed it, dashed to the outside of Mr. Peterson’s home, sneaked up on the mailbox and put the card in it. Meantime, Mr. Peterson noticed me, charged out, yelling horrible threats and chased me away. I guess Mr. Peterson thought I was stealing his mail.
Late Christmas Eve, surprisingly, the gate to Peterson’s store was open. In the center was even a tree. Sliding into the gate, I felt my muscles stretching out. Suddenly, the tree blazed alive, sparkling with brilliant colors of light. The brightness made me feel Mr. Peterson was watching me in the midst of a crime, but he was nowhere to be found. Then I spotted a large sign, saying “Please pull the plug and lock the gate—Merry Christmas!” Under the tree were presents and a box of groceries. With a lump in my throat, I waved, calling out, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Peterson!” Having done what his sign directed, I carried home the best Christmas I have ever had. It was a beautiful lesson on the joy of giving—a simple home-made Christmas card touched a lonely heart and opened a locked gate.

7.【湖北省黄石市阳新三校2023年高三联考试题】
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband Fred and I moved to a new place. We bought a small house in a reasonably good neighborhood close to Fred’s office. It was a one-and-a-half-floor brick house built for soldiers returning from World War II. That house impressed nobody except me. We had to decorate it first because it was so old. Fred and I started to paint the walls and the doors. I also worked outside the house, helping Fred break the ugly fence between us and the neighbors and grow some flowers.
After I finished painting walls in the bedroom upstairs, I brought up some water and old towels to wash the window. I washed the inside, then opened the window and stepped out on the kitchen roof to wash the outside. The window was the kind that you couldn’t open from the outside.
I was so devoted to my housework that I didn’t realize the window gradually closed. After finishing cleaning, I stood back to admire the clean glass. And then, I tried to open the window, but I failed. Standing on my kitchen roof, I looked around the neighborhood. That was a lovely afternoon. Where were the neighbor kids riding their bikes They often rode back from the park. No young voices shouted to one another. The neighbor on the left was at work. Carroll and Julie, an elderly couple, lived in the house at the corner and were our nextdoor neighbors. They were likely to be at home, but our kitchen was on the wrong side of our house for me to call them.
I sat down and thought about my situation. Even if someone came along, he couldn’t walk in the house and open the window. The doors were locked. That was my husband’s doing. “When you’re working on an indoor project, anyone could just open the door and come in. So, just keep the doors closed,” he would say. I just needed a rope to get down. I sat there, thinking how stupid I was and wishing a rope would magically appear.

Suddenly, I heard a little boy laughing. I stood up and looked down the street. Sure enough, there was a little boy. He was riding his bike. I told him that was washing the window and it shut. He looked up, saw me, and laughed. After all, it’s not an everyday case that you see an old lady on a roof. I told him to ask my next-door neighbors to come and help me. “Of course,” he simply answered.
The boy looked at me for while and left to ask for help. Soon Carroll and Julie came, bringing a long rope with them. And then I climbed down. I sincerely thanked them for their kind help. The doors were locked and the keys were in the house, so my lovely neighbors invited me to their house to celebrate my rescue with coffee, cookies, and laughter. A few hours later, my husband came back. I said thanks to them again and went home. From then on, I definitely believe that a far-off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor.

I must admit, I haven’t always liked animals. In fact, I distrusted them greatly while growing up, and I still fear the ones I don’t know personally. What set my beliefs in stone was being attacked—not once but many times, including the summer after second grade when I was bitten by a rabbit. Then, when I was nine and riding my dirt bike down the road, a large dog charged me and tried to bite my ankle. After all those negative experiences, there was one thing I knew for sure: All creatures, great and small, were no friends of mine.
After college in California, I returned to live the single life in Las Vega. Then I met Lisa. In no time at all, we fell in love, married and moved into a new house. Despite my avoidance of animals, Lisa had a dog called Bailey. Bailey didn’t like me, but he tolerated my existence once he realized I wasn’t going anywhere.
Things changed as spring came. We welcomed a new member of our family: our son Evan. One evening Evan grabbed hold of the dog’s tail. The irritated dog paused and turned to look at his stuck tail but waited patiently until being released. Still the stories I’d heard of animals attacking babies worries me.
Then my worst fear occurred. I sat on the couch (沙发) reading after a long day while my wife worked at the dining-room table paying the bills. I saw Evan crawl across the family-room carpet as he made his way behind the couch. One minute, all was quiet and then Bailey entered the room and headed to where Evan had crawled. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the dog start a fearful barking behind me.

【答案】
Throwing the book away, I rushed around the couch with great fear. The damn dog was barking directly at a huge scorpion in front of Evan’s chin. Evan lay on his belly, his head held high, frozen in fright as Bailey continued to bark at full volume mere inches away. The huge scorpion had its tail up and was prepared to strike. Without hesitation, the dog rushed to attack the scorpion and killed it with one bite. It was such a close call. Lisa scooped up our crying child.
Having witnessed our dog killing a scorpion (蝎子) and saving my son, I was speechless. Unconsciously, tears rolled down my cheek. Without worry and fear any longer, I knelt down and gave that brave dog some kisses. Bailey seemed to have fully understood my feeling, he lay in my arms to comfort me. It was a crucial moment which showed how both human and beast can live in harmony. I had a new belief in love. It is that some animals are human’s good friends indeed.

It was February 21, the International Mother Language Day, a day to celebrate language and cultural diversity. On the way home from school. Max and I scratched (抓) our heads, trying to figure out the meaning of Mr. Brown’s assignment. At first, we thought he was just giving an assignment to get us back into the habit of homework. We also wondered if it had more to do with how we presented to our classmates. Eventually, we both decided we would impress Mr. Brown and the class with some unique answers.
The next day, Max started his presentation by asking the class a question: “Is café an English word ” Some of the students nodded while a few shook their heads. Max continued with a smile and told the class that “cafe” actually came from French. “As one of the most spoken languages in the whole world, French has a charm of its own!” Max said. He instructed the class as if he were a university professor: “It is said that about 45% of the modern English words came from French. ” After writing some common French words on the blackboard, he began to teach the class how to pronounce them. 【答案】
I was ready to do some fun activities with the class. I started my presentation by sharing some interesting facts about Chinese language. “Did you know that Chinese characters were invented over 3,000 years ago ” I asked the class. They looked surprised and intrigued. I continued, “Also, Chinese is a tonal language, which means the meaning of a word changes depending on the tone used to say it.” I then demonstrated this by pronouncing a few Chinese words with different tones, and the class tried to guess their meanings. They were fascinated by the complexity of the language, and I was happy to share my culture and language with them.
Mr. Brown was totally pleased with our presentations. He commended Max and me for our creativity and knowledge about our native languages. He also mentioned how important it was to celebrate and appreciate different languages and cultures. “Language is the key to understanding different perspectives and building relationships with people from all over the world,” he said. He then announced that the class would have more opportunities to learn about different languages and cultures in the future, and encouraged us to continue to share our own experiences and knowledge.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I ran after the train, shouting, “Hey mister, can’t you see me ” It was hopeless, as no conductor is going to slow down for a 60-year-old man who got to the station several minutes late. They absolutely didn’t know how important that day, that train ride was to me! I was on my way to an interview for what could have been the opportunity of a lifetime.
I threw both my hat and my art case down in depression, and sat down on the nearest chair, wiping (擦掉) the sweat from my face and breathing heavily. I would have to wait a whole day for the next train, and by then my appointment with the gallery owner would have given up on me. Perhaps it was for the best. It was, after all, the first time in 40 years anyone had shown such an interest in my art. Maybe if the gallery owner had seen all my paintings, he would have changed his mind about offering me space on his walls.
Disappointment filled my soul. Should I dial the gallery and get an interview on a different day But Pierre Gianni was the owner of the most well-known gallery in New York City. Why would he give a rare second chance to an elderly nobody when he had the newest, coolest young artists to choose from
Come to think of it, perhaps these insecurities were the very reason I had never been offered a show before. I was too afraid to try. I found countless excuses not to offer my work up to be seen and perhaps criticized. I told myself it would hurt too much if I failed, but the truth was that I had never tried.
Finally, I gathered all my courage to dial the gallery, only to find my antique cell phone had broken down. It was at the very moment that I was in total despair and decided to go home.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly I felt a touch on my shoulder. I turned around and saw an old man smiling gently at me. He told me that he had noticed the trouble which I was in and offered to lend me his phone. I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to him but words got stuck in my throat. Taking the phone he passed to me, I managed to collect myself and plucked up my courage to dial Pierre. After what seemed like an eternity, the phone was picked up. To my great relief, Pierre agreed to postpone the interview.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning I got to the gallery on time. I was staring at its grandeur when Pierre approached and welcomed me warmly. Several minutes later, with trembling hands I opened my art case and showed him my paintings one by one. Pierre fixed his eyes on my works with interest, listening to me attentively. Time ticking by, I grew more and more confident and excited. He loved my works! They were scheduled to be exhibited one month later! I was never more certain that what seems far beyond is simply a leap away if you dare to give it a try.

It was February 21, the International Mother Language Day, a day to celebrate language and cultural diversity. At the end of the day, Mr. Brown gave us an assignment: “All of you are to make a presentation about your native language.” Max, whose family came from France and I, who was born in China, were chosen to be the first two presenters. However, both of us were at a loss, wondering what should be talked about. Needless to say, there were many questions about what he meant. What should be talked about How many sentences are needed What format Do we need to write down everything
Everyone, including Mr. Brown, applauded when he was done, I clapped along, excited and nervous about my following presentation.
