I can’t say how grateful I am to my daughter’s teacher, but he really changed her life in a way that neither of us could do.
My 10-year-old daughter suffered from dyslexia(诵读困难). Although we made every effort to tell her she had many gifts, she had decided she must be stupid. She battled with her work and her teachers. When it came to examinations, she would have difficulty reading the questions, which made her fail almost every exam.
Her math teacher, seemingly the only teacher who understood her dyslexia, unexpectedly offered to read her the questions(not help with the answers of course). The result An unheard of B for math. The act of one thoughtful teacher had, perhaps for the first time in my daughter’s life, unlocked her right to enjoy life to the full.
I could of course not allow this wonderful event to go by without thanking the math teacher. I phoned the school. When I asked to speak to him, I received a very guarded “why” from the gatekeeper. The surprise in his voice was clear when I replied “I want to thank him”. He called the teacher. The teacher came on the line with the same response. I said I just wanted to speak to him about my daughter’s math result.
“I want to thank you for reading the questions to my daughter for her math exam. Not only did she get a B but you have no idea of the influence your action has had on my daughter’s self-belief and hopes for her future. ” I loved the way his voice lightened as we went on to have a lovely talk about common interests.
My daughter’s sufferings from dyslexia continue to this day. However, she is now an experienced Family and Youth Care worker who believes in herself, shows self-confidence, has helped and continues to help many people in her life and is happily married with four children.

Have you ever loved a TV show Like, you can’t wait to talk about it and are eager to watch the next episode. This is a growing social trend—Binge-watching(刷剧).
Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession(连续). With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, “binge-watching” has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back(一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections-binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said, “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move. ” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction

When it comes to operating homework standard, different schools have different solutions. For the last thirty years, the homework standard of a Massachusetts elementary school has always been the “10-minute” rule, which means that each grade has a maximum of 10 minutes of homework per day.
But recently, that elementary school has announced plans for a no-homework pilot（试点的） for the coming school year by extending two hours to provide more classroom instructions. “We really want kids to go home at 4 o’clock. ” Kelly Elementary School Principal Jackie Glasheen said. “We want them to enjoy their families. We want them to go to soccer practice or football practice. ”
New solutions to homework differ by community. These local debates aren’t easily understood by the fact that even education experts disagree about what’s best for kids. The most all-round research on homework so far comes from an analysis by Duke University professor Harris Cooper, who found evidence of a positive relationship between homework and student achievement, meaning students who did homework performed better in school. Cooper’s analysis focused on how homework influences test scores. The relationship was stronger for older students—in 7th through 12th grade, than for those in younger grades, for whom there was a weak relationship between homework and performance.
Although there is the weak relationship between homework and performance for young children, Cooper argues that a small amount of homework is useful for all students. Second-graders should not be doing two hours of homework each night, he said, but they also shouldn’t be doing no homework.
However, Cathy Vatterott, an education professor at the University Missouri-St. Louis, thinks there is not enough evidence that homework is helpful for students in elementary school, “Relationship is not a cause, ” she said “Does homework cause achievement, or do high achievers do more homework ” Vatterott thinks there should be more stress on improving the quality of homework tasks, and she supports efforts to ban homework for younger kids.

W:Jim was surprised when his high school class traveled to England to learn about the life of William Shakespeare,one of England’s most famous writers.He knew Shakespeare was born in a small town,but until he visited Stratford-upon-Avon, Jim couldn’t really imagine the place where Shakespeare spent his childhood.During his visit,Jim learned that Shakespeare’s father was a glove maker.He also helped the city government in his spare time so his son could go to school for free.Sadly,when Shakespeare was only 15,his father died while traveling back from Cambridge.He had to leave school and could not go to university.But the tour guide told Jim’s class that it was good that Shakespeare did not go to college.Nobody taught him how to write his plays,so he was free to write in a new way.His plays were different and interesting,and he became famous in London.Now,his name is known all over the world.
