A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer — that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

(例如文章中I was so moved by her kindness.
When I was a kid my life was a sweet life. I lived in a beautiful house with the beautiful surroundings in Peru(秘鲁). There was one particular thing I loved and it was a huge tree that was in my backyard. As a child, I used to climb the tree every day. Every time I went, I climbed higher and higher, reaching new branches(树枝), obstacles (障碍物), and pathways on my way up. One day, I finally reached the top and I could see my island. I felt I was on top of the world, and nothing could stop me. It was the special tree that taught me never to give up and reach higher.
Then, there was the day that seemed like the end of my life. This specific day changed my life forever.
It was a nice summer day. After breakfast, my family went to the park to see my baseball game. In the evening we went to a carnival (嘉年华) in my town. My grandma was selling blankets under a tent. Suddenly, the mood of the day changed when my parents took me to my grandma’s tent. Still to this day, I remember the exact words my dad said to me, “Son, would you like to move to the United States ” I couldn’t believe what he said. I then ran away from him as the tears rolled down my cheeks. My perfect life was being taken away from me.
Two weeks later, we arrived at New York in late July, and my aunt and uncle drove us to Springfield, Massachusetts where we lived for seven years. As a 9-year-old kid who grew up in Peru, I knew little about local language and culture. What’s worse, September came soon and school started.

I first checked the youth hostel (青年旅舍),but it was completely full.Setting aside five crowns (克朗) for the bus ticket,I had nine crowns to spend.Every hotel I tried to check into charged twenty two to twenty five crowns, until I had only one more hotel to try.If it was too expensive,I'd have to spend the night on a park seat,an uncomfortable idea for someone almost 60 years old.
The hotel looked much nicer than I expected. It would surely cost more than nine crowns. The person working at the front desk spoke some English,so I told her my story. She listened carefully, and then asked me to wait.A woman came out and in very good English introduced herself as the manager. She asked what she could do to help.

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother—loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept. “You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind:
“Honey, where are the kids ”
“What ! Oh, Gosh… I thought they were being awfully quiet.”
We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1: The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Mom insisted that we must make full use of it since we had brought it. David and I cast a look at Dad, hoping he could turn down her crazy idea again. Much to our frustration, he agreed unexpectedly. Mom’s eyes twinkled with pleasure. She pulled over the car and searched for the tent instantly. All of a sudden, she let out a cry of anxiety. “Oh, gosh! We left the tent in the hotel!” she burst out crying like a child. Absolutely speechless as we were, we made up our mind to head back to the hotel. Luckily, we managed to retrieve the tent and even enjoyed a night in our tent for the first time. The next day, we continued our trip pleasantly.
Paragraph 2: We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. The vast bright blue sky, the limitless fresh green grass, the blossoming wild charming flowers, the group of adorable sheep kept me spellbound. However, all the breathtaking and picturesque scenery faded away compared to my absent-mind and forgetful mom, it dawned on me that without all the unnecessary trouble caused by mom, the journey wouldn’t be such a fantastic and amazing experience to treasure in my childhood. It was her who brought light to our plain life. I really love my Mum.

The pan was too hot

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. They hugged her and shouted, “Happy Mother’s Day, dear Mummy!” Mother hugged the twins. Her eyes widened at the sight of the breakfast. She shook Father who was pretending to sleep. He faked astonishment when he saw the breakfast. Mother bit into a sandwich and said it was the best she had ever tasted. Jeff immediately wanted to have a bite. Jenna caught her father’s eye and they smiled at each other secretly.
范文三
Para1 As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared.
Their father seemed to understand exactly what had happened and what to do next. He grabbed the handle of the pan and slipped a bar of butter to melt before putting another slice of cup. Then he swiftly removed the burnt porridge away, and poured another cup of rice, starting to cook it all over again. In between, he kept silent and focused on what he was doing. The twins stood straight and awe, watching the hustle and bustle from their father. At 7 o’clock, every thing was done and perfect. The twins took over the tray, feeling guilty about being over-confident about their competence in performing the house chores.
Para2 The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. They presented the well-cooked breakfast in front of Mother. Their mother beamed from ear to ear, praising and appreciating children’s nice act of gesture. However, the twins lowered their heads, shoulders drooping down. It didn’t turn out as they had planned. Finally, Jenna broke out the silence, confessing “Mother, we have taken it for granted for so long that the breakfast that you make for us every morning is a super easy job. ” Jeff cut in “But it wasn’t.” Jenna continued “On this Mother’s day, we would like to thank you for your dedication and care for us.” “And from tomorrow, we will learn to make our own breakfast in order to take back our responsibility from you. ” Mother’s eyes were welled up with tears and nodded.
