DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our parents, because we get some of their DNA to make our own.
①People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our family. It is because of small things called “genes” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages.They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell (细胞) to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map, but we do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means, we can help to save people from several illnesses. ②所以我们了解得越多, 医生就能做得越多。
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine to help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information, we will use it in the wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people getting jobs.

Zhang Guimei, the principal of Huaping High School for Girls, has been given the title “Role Model of the Times” for helping girls from poor families.
The school was the first high school in the country to provide free education for girls who would otherwise have been unable to continue their studies after completing their nine years of education.
Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 17 to teach in the middle school in Huaping County. Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment (治疗). ①在当地人们的帮助下，她得到了必要的救治。“From then on, I told myself that I must do something for those people who helped me,” Zhang said.
Slowly, a dream of setting up a free high school for girls in Huaping County appeared in Zhang’s heart. From the year of 2002, she began a six-year journey to look for funds (资金). ②In 2008, Zhang finally set up Huaping High School for Girls.It is located at at the foot of the Shizi Mountain in Huaping.
Thanks to her efforts more than 1, 800 girls from poor families have entered universities through her education until now.
Zhang has been helping to improve the area as a whole. Influenced by her, many of her students have chosen to teach in poor areas. Now, with Zhang having got the honorary title, education for girls from poor areas will receive more attention.
What she has done will be long remembered and encourage more to follow her example.

Do you like playing basketball If so, you must be very shocked and sad about the death of Kobe Bryant, a famous NBA basketball player, Kobe died in a helicopter(直升机) accident in California on January 26, 2020. Just three days before the accident, he sent out Chinese New Year wishes, and encouraged Chinese fans to live(实践)their dreams and dare to win.
Bryant is a popular basketball player in China. On March17, 2019, Kobe Bryant visited a middle school in Shenzhen to meet students. At the school, he also shared his new sports novel.
①Kobe was known for trying the hardest to be the best. And he called the spirit “Mamba Spirit”. It encouraged many young people. He once said, “Life is too short to get bogged down.
