Suma Rifai is a woman with lots of responsibility. She has raised two children on her own, and now helps care her aging parents and her dogs. But she has always wanted to learn. Now, at age 55, she's a student at the University for Seniors (UfS) in Beirut, Lebanon.
"We have a very high emigration rate in Lebanon: Lebanese youth leaving the country and older Lebanese adults returning to their home country to retire in Lebanon," said Maya Abi Chahine, UfS's program manager. "Seniors find themselves kind of alone. The UfS is for students aged 50 and up and, although it doesn't offer degrees, the program offers a variety of lectures and courses, covering various topics to help older people get the most out of their later years."
Usually, UfS classes were held in person at the American University of Beirut campus, where students rubbed shoulders with college age classmates. However, since the start of COVID-19, learning has moved online.
Online learning has also opened the door for many new students to attend the program for the first time. 77-year-old Jaques Ekmekji was never able to join UfS when it was in person. "I was almost always stuck at home because of operation on my back," Ekmekji said. "When everything moved online, that was a great opportunity for me."
Since joining UfS, Ekmekji says the program has given him the chance to explore new curiosities. "It gives me a real space for growth in certain areas that I never thought of."
Suma Rifai can't wait to talk in person back on the American University campus. "I believe it's a must for the new generation to see us on campus. For them, they have to see that the hope is there." The hope, says Rifai, is that no matter how old you are, you can always be a student.

Welcome to the tour bus that helps you catch up on sleep. A new Hong Kong Sleeping Bus Tour is letting people get some much-needed extra sleep. The bus tour is a 76-kilometer, five hour ride around Hong Kong on a double-decker bus. Tickets for the Sleeping Bus Tour quickly sold out, passengers had to wait in the long line in front of the ticket office.
So how did the idea of the tour come out about "When we were trying to develop new tours, I was stressed out by my work, and I couldn't sleep at night. So I once suddenly passed out in my office because I had suffered from lack of sleep," said Kenneth Kong of Ulu Travel, the organizer of the bus tours. "But when I was travelling on the bus, I was able to sleep well. So I create this tour that lets passengers just sleep on the bus."
Dr. Shirley Li, who researches sleep at the University of Hong Kong, said, "People in Hong Kong don't have enough time to sleep. Some people may tend to connect public transport with their sleep. And that's why they found it easier to fall sleep on the bus. People can sleep on the bus at any time. So the Sleeping Bus Tour can really help them. And this tour also reminds the public about the drop in people's healthy lifestyles."
"I have been suffering from insomnia, so I am here to try and get some sleep. I know it is just for a moment, because I don't want to move my comfortable bedroom into a bus and sleep in the sunshine," said 25-year-old Anson Kong, one of the passengers on the first bus tour.

Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and more in organized sports. While participation in organized sports has both social and physical benefits for young children, concerns about safety and benefits increase as participants get younger.
Though most children are naturally likely to be physically active, not all kids are willing to get up and move. Soccer coach Joseph Luxbacher says, "Every kid has the potential to be a good sportsman in different kinds of sports. Participating in organized sports such as the school soccer team introduces direction to children's physical activities. Following a team schedule gives kids a set time and place to exercise. Playing organized sports requires a lot of time for practice and games, so it would seem that this could influence students' study. Actually it can ameliorate students' test performance. That's because to play organized sports well, players have to memorize information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types of learning skills can make students score higher.
Though it can come from many different sources—parents, coaches, teammates or themselves—many children who participate in organized sports feel pressured to succeed. While a little stress can be helpful in leading children to perform with increased focus and strength, too much stress will leave young kids feeling very tired. Organized sports are more likely to put the right amount of pressure on them.
