Whenever asked why I chose to become a doctor, I would always explain by telling the story of my adolescence (青春期).
As a fresh graduate of high school, I found it difficult to choose a career path before college. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: be-coming an engineer, a doctor or a financial worker. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience business for a month in an international company, and then medicine for another month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I began a month’s placement at a foreign bank. I got to know the rules of financial world, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early at 7 a.m., compared to 9 a.m. at the bank, and were filled with endless duties and the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing environment, better working hours and less stress; while the hospital was full of excitement and difficult studying and training. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Morty was checking out his library books when it caught his eye-a poster for Adventure Rocks Kids Camp. “Check this out!” Morty called to Ben and Fred as he grabbed three brochures and dashed to catch up with his best buddies. They all stopped, books in hands, to stare at the pictures of kids flying above canyons suspended from zip lines. They instantly believed the brochure’s headline: Summer won’t be complete until you Take it to the Limit at Adventure Rocks Kids Camp.
Ben broke the silence, “We have less than two weeks until registration opens, and it says the camp fills up fast.” Then an idea popped into Morty’s head. “Why don’t we sell lemonade and snacks by the side of the road We can pool our allowance savings for the camp.” “That’s a great Idea,” Ben said.
The sun had barely come up on Saturday morning when the kids set up their business. They chose a spot, asked permission from the homeowner, and then asked to use her garden hose for water to make lemonade.
Their business went smoothly until Ben announced that they had a comparatively small stock of lemons shortly after noon. Morty decided to make their stock go further. “Fred, when the jug gets down to one-fourth full, just fill it to the top with the water hose.” Morty was thinking out loud, “I’ll change the sign and charge 30 more cents for each cup of lemonade.” Their business went on and the three were secretly proud of the little tricks they had done.
Just as Morty finished refilling the jug with water for the third time, a vehicle rounded the comer. Morty saw the minivan with his father at the wheel and his family inside. They pulled up to the sidewalk, and his brothers and sisters jumped out, each clutching a coin or two. They were eager to support their brother’s bustling business. Morty’s family bought the last of the brownies and drank the last drop of watered-down lemonade.

How far would you go to help a friend Jeremy Savage, aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, both from Canada, had their friendship tested to the limit on a recent trip to the Rocky Mountains with their parents.
On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three meters off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move then. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help but he did not want to leave his friend. He cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. With incredible calmness and his former experience in the mountain, Jeremy then gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy used his jacket and an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together. Sensing his friend’s pain and anxiety, Jeremy gently comforted him and gave him constant encouragement in a determined tone.
Meanwhile, as darkness started to fall, their parents back at the campsite became very worried that the boys had not returned. Desperate tears welling up in the eyes, the mothers frantically prayed to God for their sons’ safety. They got in touch with park workers and began searching for the boys. Soon more than 20 people were looking for them on Cathedral Mountain.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a warm summer morning. I had just finished reading the grocery specials in the paper. I didn’t really need anything for the next few days. Nothing stuck out as a particularly good deal except the bonus chicken packs.
Five minutes later I headed to the store on my bike: helmet on my head, old pack on my back, and five bucks in my pocket. The temperature seemed to have gone up a little. I locked up my bike and went in. I headed straight back to the meat counter. I grabbed a package weighing slightly over ten pounds, and then headed for the checkout.
“Paper or plastic,” the clerk asked. She gave me a whole lot of change for so much meat and slipped the family pack into a sack, with most of it sticking out the top.
I headed outside, pleased with my purchase and with visions of fried chicken and chicken and rice in my head. Reality set in when the air hit my face. Not warm air, but really hot air. I realized I didn’t have the car, so the chicken would be riding on my back.
Actually, the partially frozen chicken felt cold against my back. In my head I began to count the number of stop signs left before I got home. The signal light turned yellow so I stopped.
For a moment at the signal, it was quiet. Then I heard a woman start screaming. The light turned green but the cars didn’t move. Maybe there had been an accident I looked behind me even though I never heard any cars’ crunch.
What I saw was a small herd of people coming up the road towards me. There was a man in a suit, a woman with a beach towel, and a few others. I heard someone yell, ‘I’m a nurse. " I looked around again and still, no visible accident. Moving faster, this herd of folks started talking loudly in my direction.
“Were you in an accident” Are you alright ” Who are they talking to, I wondered
I had no idea what was wrong. I was puzzled!

Every early morning Gleen would run to school to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and classmates arrived. Their little schoolhouse was heated by an old- fashioned coal stove in winter.
One chilly morning, the teacher and students arrived, only to find the schoolhouse in flames. Gleen was dragged out of the flaming building, unconscious. The lower half of his body was badly burned and he was immediately sent to a nearby hospital. From his bed, Gleen faintly heard the doctor talking to his parents. “He could hardly survive, ” the doctor said in a low voice, “for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. ”
“I don’t want to die, mum. ” Gleen told his mother. He was determined to survive. To the doctor’s amazement, he did survive. When the serious danger was past, he again heard the doctor and his parents speaking quietly. “He was bound to be disabled for life, ” the doctor whispered, “since the fire had destroyed so much flesh a in the lower part of his body. He can’t walk like a normal person. ”
“I will walk, dad. ” Gleen told his father. Once more, the brave boy made up his mind. He would not be disabled. But unfortunately, he has no feeling from the waist down. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Ultimately, he was discharged from the hospital.
Back home, Gleen’s mother would squeeze and rub his little legs every day, hoping to help them recover, but it made little difference. He was either in bed or attached to a wheelchair. Yet his determination that he would walk never faded. Instead, he kept thinking about how to make himself stand up and walk again.
On a lovely summer day, as usual, Gleen was wheeled out into the yard for some fresh air, where his father had just built a fence by driving the stakes (木桩) into the grassland. Sitting in the wheelchair, Gleen was staring at the fence around the yard.

【答案】参考答案
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road, face down and rolled over. He lay still in the middle of the road as the bus sped away. None of the cars behind stopped. Thinking that he could die any minute, I stopped my car, rushed to him, and carefully examined his breath. With the help of some passers-by, I lifted the unconscious boy into the car and raced back to the hospital. After his family was contacted, and he was wheeled into emergency surgery, I drove home, exhausted but happy.
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. In excitement, they held my hands, with a lump in their throats. Feeling their sincere gratitude, I was overwhelmed with a rush of pride. How incredible it was to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I decided on my career path, the one full of challenges and stress but also with more senses of satisfaction and pride.

【答案】Morty’s father frowned at the sip of the lemonade. As to him, it tasted more like water. Overwhelmed with confusion, he asked directly, “What’s wrong It tastes just like cold water.” The moment Morty heard his father’s doubt, he stood awkwardly, not sure what to say. Fred and Ben were also speechless. A moment later, they admitted what they had done. Although Morty’s father was disappointed, he said, “You still have time to correct your wrongdoings.” Hearing this, they nodded immediately.
They decided to fix their wrongdoings the next week. Ben suggested to use the money earned to prepare enough lemons first and then reduce the price. They all agreed. When they restarted their business, they even stood a sign, saying, “We send a cup of lemonade to customers who bought it last Saturday afternoon for free.” They made over 50 cups of lemonade for a constant stream of customers with a low price and over 20 cups were for free. As you can imagine, they didn’t get enough money for the camp. But they learned a valuable lesson that one should always be honest.

He thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone on such a cold, windy night. However, with the surroundings from chilly to freezing, Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, they started the long climb back to the campsite. Sometimes Jeremy carried Ian on his back. Sometimes he carried him in his arms.
Finally, after four long and tiring hours’ climbing down, they came across their parents. Upon seeing the two boys, their parents dashed to wrap them in their arms. All the fear, cold and even pain were seemingly driven away by the reunion with their parents. Jeremy and Ian burst into tears, sobbing out what had happened in this adventure. On the way to the hospital, Ian held on tight to Jeremy’s hand, saying,“I’ll always remember what you did for me. “Look, you are bleeding! Why don’t you get off your bike and take off your backpack ” Willing hands held my bike and helped me get my backpack off. Then I looked down at my backpack, siting now on the while concrete strip of road. There as a red ring around it! I realized my arms and legs also had blood on them. No wonder all of them thought I had trouble. I pointed to the backpack as I started to laugh — so hard I could barely talk.
“It’s my chicken.” I told the group of people. They opened my backpack not knowing what to expect. And they found ten pounds of now seriously melting chicken parts, which had leaked through the paper sack, through my backpack and all over me. I looked like an accident victim. There was chicken blood all over my arms and legs — everywhere. I looked. Suddenly, everyone was laughing out of relief. I’m very grateful and happy that so many people show much concern for me.

After that, Gleen began to do this every day until he made a flat path beside the fence. He kept practicing standing up and walking with the help of the fence while his mother kept squeezing and rubbing his legs every day.
