On May 15,2013,Sarah and David Brown heard the words every parent dreads: Their newborn wasn't going to make it. Their twins-a girl and a boy-were born two minutes apart and 13 weeks premature, weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and he'd stopped breathing. The baby had just moments to live.
“I saw him gasp, but the doctor said it was no use,” Sarah said. “I know it sounds stupid, but if he was still gasping, that was a sign of life. I wasn't going to give up easily.” Still, the couple knew this was likely goodbye. In an effort to cherish her last minutes with the tiny boy, Sarah asked to hold him. “I wanted to meet him, and for him to know us,” Sarah told the Daily Mail five years later. “We'd resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to lose him, and we were just trying to make the most of those last, precious moments.”
Sarah unwrapped the boy, whom the couple had already named Jamie, from his hospital blanket and ordered David to take his shirt off and join the boy and the girl in bed. The first-time parents wanted their son to be as warm as possible and hoped the skin-to-skin contact would improve his condition. They also talked to him.
“We were trying to make him stay,” Sarah said. “We explained his name and that he had a twin that he had to look out for and how hard we had tried to have him.” Then something miraculous happened. Jamie gasped again-and then he started breathing. Finally, he reached for his father's finger.
Eight years later, Jamie and his sister, Emily, are happy and healthy. The Browns only recently told the kids the story of their birth. “Emily burst into tears,” Sarah said. “She kept hugging Jamie. This whole experience makes you cherish them more.”

In one of my favorite studies on the meaning of life, researchers asked a group of students to write about their "true self’. Another group of students were asked to write about their “everyday self' and a third group of students were asked to write about the campus bookstore. After the writing task, the students were then asked to rate their meaning of life.
The researchers were interested in how much detail the participants provided in their various essays. Their assumption is that the more detailed description one provides about one's true self, the more likely one authentically connects with that sense of self. Not surprisingly, for those writing about their “everyday self' or about the campus bookstore, the amount of detail didn't have any connection with their sense of meaning of life. However, when people wrote about their “true self", the more detailed the essay was, the more the person was exposed to the meaning of life.
To live a meaningful life, then, make sure you are in touch with yourself. If you don't follow your own values and dreams, you are most probably following values set by others. And there is nothing more disappointing in life than living someone else's dream. As Oscar Wilde put it, it is better to be yourself, as everyone else is already taken.
Meaningfulness is about connection. While this means that a major part of the meaningfulness in our lives comes from connecting with others through intimate, caring relationships and through being able to contribute to society and those one cares about, you cannot connect with others unless you are first in touch with yourself. Otherwise it is not you who are connecting to others but just an empty shell. Only by knowing what you are, can you start to authentically connect with others.
So, set out to write about your true self and who you believe you really are as a person, what your most important values are, and what you yourself would like to pursue and have in life. Then figure out how you could make that “true self" more the self that is realized in your everyday life and work.
7.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.The process of a study.
C.Three groups of students.
B.The meaning of life.
D. A writing task of evaluating life.
8.What's the finding of the researchers .
A. “Everyday self” connects with the campus bookstore.
B. More various essays interpret the meaning of life better.
C. The participants with detailed essays have a more meaningful life.
D. More “true self' description makes one experience the meaning of life better.
9.What does the underlined word “intimate” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Personal and private.
C.Close and friendly.
B.Deep and detailed.
D. Quiet and gentle.
10.What can make you truly connect with others
A.Following values and dreams set by others.
B.Being the author of your own life.
C.Changing “everyday self” into “true self'.
D.Being able to contribute to society.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Connect with Life-Dream Is Valued
B.Why Not Pursue Goals You Find Useful
C.Be Yourself-Everyone Else Is Taken
D.Why Not Build Caring Relationships with Yourself
D
If humans pump enough carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, the stratocumulus clouds(层积云)could disappear, and the earth's temperature could climb sharply to heights not predicted in current climate models. It would burn the planet. That’s the conclusion of a paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience and described in detail by Natalie Wolchover for Quanta Magazine.
As Wolchover explained, clouds have long been one of the great uncertainties of climate puter models that easily capture the complexity and detail of most climate systems just aren't powerful enough to predict worldwide changes in cloud behavior. But clouds are important. They reflect sunlight away from the earth's surface. And stratocumulus clouds are those white blankets you might have seen as you looked out the window of arm airplane, rolling out below you and hiding the ground. Researchers suspect that certain sudden, past jumps in temperature may have been caused by changes to clouds like these.
For the new research, scientists modeled just a small patch of sky using a supercomputer. They found that if carbon dioxide levels reach about 1, 200 parts per million(ppm) in the atmosphere, stratocumulus clouds break up. That's a very high carbon dioxide concentration. Right now, levels have climbed past 410 ppm--a dangerous change from 280 ppm before the Industrial Revolution.
But humans put more and more CO2 into the atmosphere every year. If current trends continue, the earth could reach 1, 200 ppm within 100 to 150 years. This could happen if our society doesn't follow through on any of its commitments to reduce emissions, Wolchover reported. And even if it does, the result would be another 8 degrees Celsius of heat added to the global average, on top of the dangerous changes already underway due to greenhouse gases.
That's an enormous change, and it goes beyond predictions of worldwide ice melt and catastrophic sea level rise. And, once the stratocumulus clouds are gone, Wolchover reported, they likely wouldn't reappear until atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below where they are currently.
There's still some uncertainty in the data. The 1, 200 ppm figure could change as scientists look into the issue further.
12.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Most climate systems are not complex.
B. Cloud behavior is uncertain and hard to predict.
C. Temperature changes affect the stratocumulus clouds.
D. The stratocumulus clouds protect planes from sunlight.
13. How did the scientists study clouds in the new research
A. By measuring the sea level.
B. By experimenting in a natural state.
C. By comparing climate models.
D. By computer modeling and analyzing.
14. What does “it” refer to in paragraph 4
A.The atmosphere.
C.Our society.
B.The earth.
D.The result.
15.Which of the following statements would Wolchover most probably agree with
A.The effects of CO2 emissions have been fully assessed.
B. The stratocumulus clouds won't return if they are gone.
C.The breakup of stratocumulus clouds could result in catastrophes.
D.Once CO2 level reaches 1,200 ppm, stratocumulus clouds will go extinct.

Just like on every break, Asiri would go with his uncle to his workshop, who made costumes for elephants! Asiri had been asking to help make the costumes. But he'd been told he was too little to sew the fine stitches(缝线)needed for the costumes.
Waiting for Uncle Thad, Asiri smoothed his practice piece beside him. Across it he had sewn, pulled out, and resewn stitches just as Uncle Thad had taught him. He couldn't wait to show it to his uncle.
When his uncle finally came over, Asiri leapt from his seat. “Look, Uncle,” said Asiri, holding up the stitched cloth. “These are fine stitches,Asiri,”said Uncle Thad. “Just right to fix sequins(亮片).Together they walked to the workshop.
Uncle Thad and his team were busy making the costumes. They had to be ready for Esala Perahera, the biggest festival held in the city of Kandy. Since the elephants were the stars of the parade, their costumes had to be dazzling. He especially loved the sequins sewn on them that made them sparkle.
Uncle Thad, his team, and now Asiri, would finish the costumes. Asiri hoped he'd get to sew a sequin onto the costume for the most important elephant in the parade. After lunch, Asiri was putting away a piece of cloth when his uncle called. “Asiri Please bring me the box of golden sequins.”
Here was his chance, thought Asiri. He'd bring the box to Uncle Thad and then ask to sew one on. Uncle Thad was sure to say yes. Asiri lifted the box from the shelf but turned a little too quickly, and the box was turned over, leaving the golden sequins on the floor. Uncle Thad turned to stare first at Asiri and then at the golden sequins. Asiri felt his cheeks turning red. Now, Uncle Thad would never let him sew a single sequin on the costumes this year. Asiri dashed out of the door, down the street, and all the way back home. Hearing the rush of his footsteps, Asiri's mother came to the door. 注意:
