(2023·天津南开·统考一模)The rapid pace of global warming and its effects on habitats raise the question of whether species are able to keep up so that they remain in suitable living conditions. Some animals can move fast to adjust to a quickly changing climate. Plants, being less mobile, rely on means such as seed dispersal (传播) by animals, wind or water to move to new areas, but this redistribution typically occurs within one kilometer of the original plant. Writing in Nature, Juan P. González-Varo sheds light on the potential capacity of migratory (迁徙的) birds to aid seed dispersal.
González-Varo and colleagues report how plants might be able to keep pace with rapid climate change through the help of migrating birds. They analyzed an impressive data set of 949 different seed-dispersal interactions between bird and plant communities, together with data on entire fruiting times and migratory patterns of birds across Europe.
The authors hypothesized (假定) that the direction of seed migration depends on how the plants interact with migratory birds, the frequency of these interactions or the number of bird species that might transport seeds from each plant species.
Perhaps the most striking feature of these inferred seed movements is the observation that 35 percent of plant species across European communities, which are closely related on the phylogenetic tree (进化树谱), might benefit from long-distance dispersal by the northward journey of migratory birds. This particular subset (小组) of plants tends to fruit over a long period of time, or has fruits that persist over the winter. This means that the ability of plants to keep up with climate change could be shaped by their evolutionary history – implying that future plant communities in the Northern Hemisphere (半球) will probably come from plant species that are phylogenetically closely related and that have migrated from the south.
This study provides a great example of how migratory birds might assist plant redistribution to new locations that would normally be difficult for them to reach on their own, and which might offer a suitable climate.

(2023·天津南开·南开中学校考模拟预测)Last year, a popular restaurant released a live stream of a family dining in it, without asking their permission. After finding out what the restaurant was doing, the family showed their objection, but the restaurant ignored it and insisted that they had the right to do it. Moreover, they tried to silence the family, saying that their behavior was damaging the restaurant's image. This event has caused a debate on the violation of privacy and portrait rights by webcasts.
It doesn't bother some people when their images are unconsciously recorded by cameras and shown through live streams on different online platforms. They may even enjoy appearing on screens and cooperate with some businesses. In that way, the restaurant can have more public exposure and thus attract more customers, which is their purpose of webcasting. However, others including the family mentioned above, are against it. The family thought that their portrait rights were violated, considering no one had asked if it was okay to use the images of them. They found intolerable that their actions captured by the camera were webcast live to millions of viewers, not to mention the fact that some of them were not so decent. Thus they demanded an apology from restaurant.
People may behave in a relaxed way when eating or resting, and they don't want others to see them in this way. Thus, from a legal perspective, if businesses webcast their customers for commercial reasons, they have violated customers portrait rights.
Webcasting someone without his or her consent amounts to a violation of portrait rights, which is getting increasingly common these days as cellphone webcasting is growing in popularity for technical convenience, However, public awareness of privacy protection is still falling behind. More should be done to make sure webcasting is developing sustainably, without violating people's legal rights.
11.What is the major issue argued in the passage

A.Customers enjoy appearing on screens.
B.Customers cooperate with some businesses.
C.Customers are shown through live streams online.
D.Customers are unconsciously recorded by cameras.

(2023·天津南开·南开中学校考模拟预测)Choosing a major, which is the specialized area of your college study, can be overwhelming. But have no fear! Your choice of major will not lock you into a specific career for the rest of your life. And the major you choose will neither predict nor guarantee your future. Consider these factors when picking your major.
Career Prep
Choose a major because it will prepare you for a specific career path or advanced study. Maybe you already know that you want to be a nurse, a day trader, or a web developer. Before you declare, take a class or two in the relevant discipline, check out the syllabus for an advanced seminar, and talk to students in the department of your choice. Make sure you’re ready for the coursework required for the career of your dreams.
Earning Potential
Future earning potential is worth considering—college is a big investment, and while college can pay you back in many ways beyond salary, this can be a major factor for students who are paying their own way or taking out loans. According to , the majors that lead to the highest salaries include just about any type of engineering, actuarial mathematics, computer science, physics, government, and economics. Keep your quality of life in mind, too—that six figure salary may not be worth it if you're not happy at the office.
Subjects You Love
Some students choose a major simply because they love the subject matter. If you love what you're studying, you're more likely to fully engage with your classes and college experience, and that can mean better grades and great relationships with others in your field. If your calling is philosophy, don't write it off just because you're not sure about graduate school, or what the job market holds for philosophers. Many liberal arts majors provide students with critical thinking skills and writing abilities that are highly valued by employers.
Undecided Explore your interests.
If you truly have no idea what you want to study, that's okay—many schools don't require students to declare a major until you are a second-year student. That gives you four semesters to play the field. Exploring your interests will help you find your best fit major—and maybe even your ideal career.
16.You don’t need to feel fearful when choosing your major because ______.
A.your major has completely nothing to do with your future
B.you are not limited to only one particular career for your whole life
C.changing career fields are unavoidable in your life
D.you only spend a little time on whatever subject you choose
17.The underlined word discipline is closest in meaning to ______.
A.field B.rule
C.theory D.knowledge
18.What do we learn about from Para. 3
A.Your college investment will be all given back to you in the form of high salary.
B.Future career earning is viewed as the top concern for most college students.
C.High salary will not be worthwhile at the cost of your unhappy office work.
D.If you choose engineering-related majors, you are sure to earn high salary.
19.What can we infer from the passage
A.You are advised to choose liberal arts majors for what are provided.
B.Worse grades result from poor relationships with others in college.
C.Employers like liberal arts majors more than science majors in job market.
D.Some students don’t necessarily need to decide their choices of majors upon entering college.
20.What is the passage mainly about
A.Why is it difficult to choose a major. B.What influences your choice of a major.
C.How can a major affect your career. D.When should you decide your major.
(2022·天津南开·统考一模)Children love it when someone reads a book to them. They love funny sounds, rhyming words and silly pictures. They love the sound of their mom or dad’s voice. Sometimes, however, their mom or dad can’t read to them, because that parent is in prison.
Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project, started in 1993, is now a national program that promotes incarcerated parents reading to their children. Church or service groups donate books and postage. Incarcerated parents pick out books, read them and either volunteers or prison workers mail the books and tapes out to the children. Last May, we distributed 191 books, meaning that 191 children received a book and a tape. The incarcerated readers record their books, followed by a personal message to the child. Sometimes it is amusing listening to strong, tattooed (纹身) muscle men making animal sounds or funny voices of different characters. Sometimes all I hear is silence, and then sounds that confirm my guess that they arc calming themselves after an unexpected wave of feelings.
Seventy percent of children of incarcerated parents eventually end up facing the justice system themselves at some point in their lives. Many of these children end up doing hard time in jails.
In reality, though, they are doing hard time now as 12-year-olds, 7-ycar-olds, and even as babies. They grow up thinking that their parent is “bad” and doesn’t care. They are often teased and feel they have to defend themselves or their parent, sometimes in a violent way.
When they receive in the mail a book and a tape of their parent reading to them, they hear another message, “Daddy/Mommy loves me; he/she has a happy voice; he/she thinks reading is cool. ”
Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project is just a small pill for one huge social illness.
But when we think we are merely scratching the surface at least 191 kids are feeling a little bit better!

A.They want to speak with feelings.
B.They have to control their feelings.
C.They need to consider what to say.
D.They feel guilty about what they did.
23.What can we infer about the children according to Paragraph 4
A.They will study law in state-run university in the future.
B.They have to learn to face reality bravely by themselves.
C.They gain a lot from their parents’ life experience.
D.They themselves may become lawbreakers in the future.
24.What does the underlined word ”teased“ in Paragraph 5 mean
A.making mistakes B.behaving themselves
C.made fun of D.taken care of
25.What does the author think of what they do
A.It is worth doing.
B.It makes little difference.
C.It has great effect on society.
D.It can change incarcerated parents.
(2022·天津南开·统考一模)People have speculated (思索) for centuries about a future without work. Some imagine that the coming work-free world will be defined by inequality: A few wealthy people will own all the capital, and the masses will struggle in a wasteland. A different prediction holds that without jobs to give their lives meaning future people will simply become lazy and depressed.
But it doesn’t necessarily follow from findings like these that a world without work would be filled with dissatisfaction. Such visions are based on the downsides of being unemployed in a society built on the concept of employment. In the absence of work, a society designed with other ends in mind could provide strikingly different circumstances for the future of labor and leisure.
These days, spare time is relatively rare for most workers. “When I come home from a hard day’s work, I often feel tired.” says John Danaher, a lecturer at the National University of Ireland, adding, “In a world in which I don’t have to work. I might feel rather different — perhaps different enough to throw myself into a hobby with the enthusiasm usually reserved for professional matters.”
Daniel Everett, an anthropologist (人类学家) at Bentley University studied a group of hunter-gathers in the Amazon called the Piranha for years. According to Everett, while some might consider hunting and gathering as work, hunter-gatherers don’t. “They think of it as fun.” he says. “They don’t have a concept of work the way we do.”
Everett described a typical day for the Piraha: A man might get up, spend a few hours fishing, have a barbecue, and play until the evening. Does this relaxing life lead to the depression and purposelessness seen among so many of today’s unemployed “I’ve never seen anything like depression there, except people who are physically ill.” Everett says. While many may consider work necessary for human life, work as it exists today is a relatively new invention in the course of human culture. “We think it’s bad to just sit around with nothing to do,” says Everett. “For the Piraha, it’s quite a desirable state.”
26.How does the author introduce the topic in Paragraph 1
A.By comparing wealthy people with the majority.
B.By giving a definition to inequality in society.
C.By listing different predictions of a work-free world
D.By picturing a lazy and depressed atmosphere.
27.What docs the underlined word “downsides” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to
A.Challenges. B.Losses. C.Disadvantages. D.Risks.
28.John Danaher might agree that__________.
A.work plays an important role in our future life
B.people’s work-free future life will be full of charm
C.people don’t know how to balance work and life
D.higher unemployment makes life tougher for workers
29.Why is Daniel Everett’s study mentioned
A.To justify John Danaher’s opinion.
B.To show a future life without work.
C.To compare different views on work.
D.To introduce the Piraha in the Amazon.
30.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true
A.Some people dislike a work-free world.
B.The Piraha don’t think they are working at all.
C.Future people might become lazy and depressed.
D.Daniel Everett prefer to sit around doing nothing
(2022·天津南开·统考三模)“High tech” and “state of the art” are two expressions that describe very modern technology. High tech is just a shorter way of saying high technology. And high technology describes any invention, system of device that uses the newest ideas or discoveries of science and engineering.
What is high tech A computer is high tech. So is a communication satellite. A modern manufacturing system is surely high tech.
High tech became a popular expression in the United States during the early 1980’s. Because of improvements in technology, people could buy many new kinds of products in American stores, such as home computers, microwave ovens(微波炉), etc.
“State of the art” is something that is as modern as possible. It is a product that is based on the very latest methods and technology. Something that is “state of the art” is the newest possible design or product of a business or industry. A state of the art television set, for example, uses the most modern electronic design and parts. It is the best that one can buy.
“State of the art” is not a new expression. Engineers have used it for years to describe the best and most modern way of doing something.
Millions of Americans began to use the expression in the late 1970’s. The reason was the computer revolution. Every computer company would say that its computers were “state of the art”.
Computer technology changed so fast that a state of the art computer today might be old tomorrow. The expression “sate of the art” became as common and popular as computers themselves. Now all kinds of products are said to be “state of the art”.

A.Computer Technology B.High Tech and State of the Art
C.Most Advanced Technology D.Two New Products
(2022·天津南开·统考三模)I stole your dog today. No, I didn’t set a foot on your house, but from the condition of your dog, I can imagine what it looks like ... the word “rubbish”comes to mind.
I found her along a road, with a heavy chain wrapped around her neck, still attached to rotten boards from her doghouse. Not only did I know that most of the town people had already ignored her, judging by where I found her, but I knew that if she had gotten into the woods, the “cross”that she dragged behind her would have wrapped around a tree until starvation(饥饿) or thirst killed her.
She has a beautiful name now. Already in the first week she has come to look more like she should. Her eyes sparkle and she has learned to wag her tail in greeting. She has stopped flinching(畏缩) when I make a sudden movement, because she knows now that I won’t beat her, in fact, she rarely leaves my side. She’s even become brave enough to bark at a cat and today I watched from the window as she attempted to play with the other dogs. No, it’s clear she does not miss you or her former life on a chain.
It’s not clear yet whether she’ll remain here or whether I’ll find her a loving home where she can count on more individual attention than I can give her, but one thing is certain, this is one bit of stolen “property” who is never returning to you. So sue me, accuse me, plead(申辩) with the courts that she is rightfully yours ... I'm convinced this is the best “crime” I've ever committed. Hardly anything has pleased me more than the day I stole your dog. I need only look into her beautiful brown eyes to know that she'd defend my decision with her life. If we have one prayer, it is that you will not replace her, and if we have one special day to celebrate together, it is the day I stole your dog and the day she stole my heart.

(2022·天津南开·统考三模)The discovery of the Komodo Dragons is one of the most important zoological (动物学的) surprises of the 20th century. Before 1912 it was completely unknown and it was believed that there were no more large lizards (蜥蜴) in the world. Then, in that year, a party of fishermen stopped at an almost completely-unknown small island in a group of islands. The fishermen brought back stories of a huge, prehistoric animal living there. The island’s name was Komodo. The largest of these lizards was over ten feet from nose to tail. Komodo dragons have also been discovered on several neighboring islands.
Are the dragons dangerous to humans Yes. A Swiss tourist who sat down to have a rest while the other people of his tour group went ahead was attacked and eaten by a dragon. All that was left was a piece of his camera. A number of other people have been killed by dragon attacks over the years. The dragons can eat up to 80 percent of their own weight in a single meal. Their attack way is to wait behind trees, then rush forward and give a single large bite to the person or other animal. Most Komodo dragons prefer wild boar (野猪) or deer as their meals, but they will try to attack and get almost every other animal they can find, including other dragons. The largest dragons weigh around 150 kilos. Though the Komodo dragons can see well, they do most of their hunting based on smell. A dragon can recognize a certain smell from several miles when the wind is right. They will hunt when they have to, and these large lizards are more than happy to get an already dead animal when they come across one.

(2022·天津南开·统考三模)The major obstacle to any success is procrastination (拖延), which makes us say, “Not now. Wait for the right time.” What we never understand is that the only right time is now. Start this moment, and you’ll succeed. If you wait for the right moment in the foggy future, you may be left to wait for that future and this wait goes on.
Once you know what your enemy is, you should keep yourself ready to face it. Now let me discuss how to deal with it.
Waiting for the Right Time
If you’re doing an important task, you just feel that this is not the right moment. Sometimes you feel there are some prerequisites (先决条件) undone. Or sometimes you think someone else would stand behind to support you.
What to do: Learn there is no time better than now. If you want to start a new project, just begin — call your team, draft the process and work. If you want to start a new hobby, buy the tools required, get a teacher or a good book and start off. Don’t wait till the next weekend.
Indecision
When you’re ready and excited about doing something, you sit at the table, but suddenly you’re stuck and don’t know how to proceed. Worries suffer from writer’s puter programmers get stuck when collecting ideas. This is natural and happens even to experts. Professionals get some solutions, but most people feel discouraged and start losing interest in the target.
What to do: First, you must have a mentor or a friend in the same field that can help you find an inspiration. Try to prepare a track for your course with a deadline. Plan well. If you are writing a novel, write in your planner that you’ll finish the character sketch for the hero on Saturday. On Sunday, you’ll write about how the hero meets the girl. In the same way, prepare tasks for every day.
These are the two causes of procrastination. Learn to fight these and keep such situations from happening. Try not to sit idly or do worthless chores. Keep some time separate for each kind of work you have to do every day and stick to it.
46.The first paragraph is written to ________.
A.attract readers’ attention B.explain what procrastination is
C.introduce the topic to be discussed D.warn readers against procrastination
47.If you feel this is the right time to do a task, you will ________.
A.wait for nobody to lend you a hand B.get something important done first
C.believe help is never to come to you D.expect nobody else to stand by you
48.If you are stuck and don’t know what to do, what would happen to you
A.You might sit at the table with experts. B.You might lose confidence and interest.
C.You might borrow ideas from professionals. D.You might solve your problem by yourself.
49.What does the underlined word “mentor” in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Advisor. B.Engineer. C.Physician. D.Governor.
50.By writing the text, the author intends to ________.
A.warn readers against indecision
B.offer some useful advice to readers about procrastination
C.analyze the cause of procrastination
D.stress the benefits of being punctual (守时的)
(2022·天津南开·统考二模)The first time I lost my best friend, I thought it was the end of the world. I don’t mean that he died, he just went away, but I still measure all pain by how hurt I was when Danny left.
I was blessed with a happy childhood, one that most people would want to have. We lived in a small house in a tiny village in Scotland and we were a very close family. Our neighbours next door had a son named Danny, and we grew up together.
We spent long summer evenings in the pine forests, digging up worms for fishing, and collecting feathers left by the birds in the cages where they had been kept for the hunters. It was here that I discovered that I was allergic(过敏的) to the tiny flies which bit me and made my face swell. There were a few walnut trees above the village and we would chase the animals away and wait for them to ripen. Of course, it was too far north for a proper harvest. On windy days we’d slide down the stony slopes(斜坡) to the bay and feel the waves of the sea in our faces.
Danny was a good carpenter(木匠) too, and we made brooms out of branches, which we tried to sell in the village shop. We built a tree house, where we smoked our first cigar, and I was sick! Once I slipped on some damp leaves, fell out, cut my arms and the heel of my foot, so he washed my wounds in the stream. My mother simply blamed me for tearing my underwear.
We were on good terms with everyone in the village, and we even gave a salute(敬礼) to the local policeman as he passed on his bicycle. But in our imagination, he was an enemy soldier, and we were two spies looking for secrets.
It was the finest friendship anyone could have, and life seemed perfect.
And then at the age of 14, his parents moved to London, over 400 kilometres away. The pain was real, and I couldn’t forgive Danny for leaving me. I felt he had abandoned me.
It was the worst loss I have ever experienced.
I’m now back in touch with Danny, and it’s an honor to call him my friend. We’re both much more mature now, and we’re still very alike.

(2022·天津南开·统考二模)One of the most exciting aspects of exploring the wild places is observing wild animals in their natural habitat. The thrill of an unexpected animal encounter is hard to match. No matter what kind of wildlife you are going to encounter, there are a few general safety rules. These will go a long way in keeping you safe when encountering wild animals.
Be aware of your surroundings
Between the scenery and conversation with your travel partners, it’s easy to get distracted (注意力分散) and stop paying attention to where your feet are taking you. Watch where you are walking. This is your number one tip for avoiding dangerous contact with snakes, insects, and other small creatures. If you are in a place where such animals are known to be present, don’t put your hands or feet into any location you can’t clearly see. Keeping the animals in mind will help you both avoid a potentially dangerous encounter.
Don’t feed the wildlife
Feeding wild animals ranks high on the list of mistakes that get people in trouble. Animals are highly motivated by food. It will make them get much closer to you, and that puts you and them in greater danger. If they become scared at close range, that can lead to an attack. Food can lead the animal to become aggressive (有攻击性的) in trying to get more food. Even if you don’t get hurt, it encourages the wildlife to approach other people which could place them in danger. Accidental feeding can be just as bad as doing it on purpose. Leaving food unprotected and unattended at a campsite is a bad idea.
Keep your distance
As a general rule, the bigger and faster an animal is, the more distance you want to keep between you and them. Every wild animal is potentially dangerous. It isn’t just big predators (食肉动物) that can kill you. Wild pig, deer, and other herbivores can be just as dangerous as a lion or bear. Don’t try to find out how close you can get to the animals. Don’t ever try to touch a wild animal.
Also, don’t assume an injured animal is not dangerous. They could well be more dangerous. If you find an injured animal, the only way you can possibly help them is to contact a park authority and report it to them. Do not attempt to help the animal. You are not likely to do it any good and are far more likely to do yourself harm.
56.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A.Having a match with a wild animal is thrilling.
B.Exploring the wild places requires safety tools and skills.
C.It’s always exciting to meet an unexpected animal while exploring the wild.
D.You need to walk a long way to observe wild animals in their natural habitat.
57.According to Paragraph 2, what is the correct way to avoid a potentially dangerous encounter
A.Bring a watch when exploring the wild.
B.Do not talk to each other and mind your steps.
C.Remember what wild animals look like before setting out.
D.Find a place free of snakes, insects and other small creatures.
58.As is described in Paragraph 3, which of the following is TRUE about feeding wild animals
A.Feeding wild animals might poison them.
B.Leaving food outside the camp can also be harmful.
C.Feeding wildlife is a task of high rank.
D.Feeding wild animals may encourage them to attack each other.
59.What does the author suggest we do when we encounter a wild animal
A.If it is injured, rescue it by yourself immediately.
B.Contact a park authority as soon as possible.
C.You can touch it if it’s a harmless animal.
D.It can be observed from a distance.
60.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A.To draw people’s attention to wildlife.
B.To help people organize outdoor activities.
C.To offer some safety tips on wildlife encounters.
D.To share his encounters with wild animals.
(2022·天津南开·统考一模)Near the small town of Grottoes, Virginia, a narrow dirt road goes from the house of Stephen Curry’s grandfather to the woods nearby. A far cry from the bright lights and shiny courts of the National Basketball Association (NBA), it was along this road that Stephen’s grandfather built a simple basket by attaching a piece of plastic to a telephone pole.
Like his father, basketball star Dell Curry, Stephen spent many childhood hours playing on this muddy basketball court. He probably didn’t realise it at the time, but it was where he learnt to be creative and flexible as a player. You see, with every shot, the weak plastic backboard gave way. The bumps and rocks that lined the road under the basket caused the ball to bounce in all directions. Knowing where the ball would go wasn’t easy. He had to adjust his own playing style as a result. Shooting with great accuracy was another thing he learnt. Only shots perfectly aimed at its centre went into the heavy, thick basket. In this way, practising day in and day out helped Stephen sharpen his skills.
Despite his father’s successful career, Stephen was thought by many people, including his high school teammates and coaches, to be too short, too thin and too weak to follow in his father’s footsteps. But Stephen carried on. Playing basketball was his dream. He would not give up. He finally ended up playing college ball at a small, little-known school, Davidson College, not too far from where he lived. His creativity and perseverance (毅力) made him Davidson’s star player.
Selected for the NBA in 2009, Stephen joined the Golden State Warriors. He performed beyond everyone’s expectations with his accurate shooting and continuous efforts. In 2015, Stephen won his first NBA championship, and he led the Warriors to their first championship since 1975.
After receiving the Most Valuable Player award for two years in a row, Stephen explained his philosophy, “I never really set out to change the game…What I wanted to do was just be myself…I know it inspires a lot of the next generation, a lot of people who love the game of basketball to value the skill of it, value the fact that you can work every single day to get better. You’ve got to be able to put in the time and the work. That’s how I got here. That’s how I continue to get better every single day.” Inspiring others to believe in themselves, Stephen Curry is living proof that what other people think of you does not have to influence what you become. Through self-belief, hard work, perseverance and some help from an old hoop, he has shown that anything is possible.

(2022·天津南开·统考一模)Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been widely applied in a national park in Northwest China to track snow leopards inhabiting the region.
The AI-aided digital toolbox can automatically tell the species apart in the Qilian Mountains National Park, Gansu province, from other wildlife, using images captured by infrared cameras (红外相机). The technology, jointly developed by Chinese internet giant Tencent, the World Wild Fund and One Planet Foundation, can thus improve data processing efficiency.
Located at around 3, 500 meters above sea level, the Qilian Mountains with vast stretches of bare rocks reaching from the grass provide a favorable hideaway shelter for the snow leopards.
Though more than 200 cameras have been put in the region, sorting out relevant information had not been easy for researchers.
“For conducting further studies on the population, distribution and activities of the snow leopards, a flagship species in the region, the cameras would capture (捕捉) hundreds of thousands of video clips and photos every quarter,” said Ma Duifang with the administration bureau of the park’s Gansu section.
“Even a slight movement in the environment, such as a mild breeze blowing over the grass, can activate the cameras. Sometimes, curious wildlife bumps into the device triggering the shutter (触发快门), and the cameras take pictures of mere clouds,” Ma added.
Ma and his colleagues had to go through each video frame by frame (逐帧地). The information of species that appeared on the images also required human input, so it often took them several weeks to complete such tasks.
Tencent’s engineering team has independently developed a species recognition algorithm (算法) by means of transfer learning and automatic data enhancement. Thanks to AI technologies, researchers in the Qilian Mountains National Park no longer need to work like mad in search of leopards hiding out in the wild.
“The forest police can now locate a snow leopard from 1, 000 pictures in just about 20 minutes, much faster than before,” said Huang Xiangqi, one of the tech developers.
Snow leopards are under China’s highest national-level protection and are listed as vulnerable (脆弱的) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
In China, they can be spotted in cold areas in southwestern, northwestern, and northern regions including Tibet, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia.
“We hope we can combine monitoring data with field investigation to help researchers accurately identify the wild species so as to draw up a more specific plan for their protection,” said Ma Yao, director of the project, hoping the digital toolbox can be used in more countries.

(2022·天津南开·统考一模)I can remember when my daughter Maggie, who is now six, used to crawl into my lap and say, “Daddy, read me a story.” Last year she announced, “Daddy, I’m going to read you a story.”
Maggie was a television child. When she first became conscious of anything beyond eating and sleeping, the TV set was right there, and it soon commanded her attention.
A few years ago, we were worried not only that we’d never get the children away from the set long enough to learn to read, but that we’d forget how to read ourselves. But in 1955 there was not only more reading than before TV, but more reading than ever before in history.
Clearly, reading has survived television as it has survived a lot of other things. When I was six, a wail went up about menaces (威胁) to reading at home: motor cars and cinema. When Maggie came along, there was television. The motorcar, the radio, the cinema and television do take up a lot of time.
Well, we’ve got more time. When my mother was a girl, people worked about 60hours a week. Now it’s 44. When Maggie grows up, it’ll be 30. And there’ll be numerous gadgets to do her housework. She’ll have to read. You can’t watch TV all day. At present Maggie is reading about Johnny Woodchuck. Ahead of her—and I’m a little envious—are her first brush with Black Beauty, Alice stepping through the looking glass, Huck and Jim drifting down the Mississippi, the emotional storms of Shakespeare, the spiritual agonies of Tolstoy. For reading isn’t all joy. Like life itself, it’s mixed with many moods, from ecstasy (狂喜) to despair. Maggie will learn to take the rough with the smooth, gathering from the ancient wisdom of long-dead genius a little fire to enrich her spirit.
And some day, if she’s lucky, she’ll get the biggest thrill of all, when a little girl climbs into her lap and announces, “Mummy, I’m going to read you a story.”

(2022·天津南开·统考一模)A world-champion body builder has no more muscles than does a 90-pound person who is physically weak. So what makes him so strong What other qualities does he need
Muscles are made of thousands of stringy fibers-a number that is fixed during childhood-which contract(收缩)when doing work. Strength does not depend on the number of fibers but on the function of their thickness and how many of them contract at the same time.
Exercise actually damages the muscles. During the recovery stage, the muscle fibers increase in size. Exercise also trains more muscle fibers to work at one time. If a muscle is weak or untrained, for example, only 10 percent of its fibers will contract, whereas up to 90 percent of the fibers in a weight lifter's biceps(二头肌)will contract.
Aside from the strength, two other factors go into making an athlete: fitness and endurance. Fitness is related to the condition of the heart. During exercises, there is an increase in the amount of blood returning to the heart from the muscles. A typical volume for a runner at rest is about 5 quarts a minute, compared with 30 quarts during a vigorous trial(运动测试). This greater volume means more work for the heart-a muscular balloon that expands and contract is to take in blood and push it out. Like any other muscle, the heart enlarges and gets stronger with routine exercise.
Endurance, or the length of time muscles can work, depends in part on how much fuel-in this case sugar-the muscles can store. A muscle that is continually exercised until it runs out of sugar tends to store more when it refuels at the next meal. And more sugar can translate into greater endurance the next time the muscle is put to the test.
76.What determines the strength of a world-champion body builder
A.The thickness of fibers and the number of those contracting contemporarily.
B.The number of fibers and the amount of exercise he does at the same time.
C.The function of fibers and their thickness.
D.The function of fibers and their recovery.
77.What effect does exercise have on muscle fibers according to the passage
A.It helps fibers more easily to contract.
B.It makes fibers increase quickly in size.
C.It makes more fibers weak or untrained.
D.It helps more fibers to work at one time.
78.What does the author mean by saying “this greater volume means more work for the heart”
A.The heart bears the task of making more blood during a vigorous trial.
B.The heart needs to bear the fast heart beating during a vigorous trial.
C.The heart takes in more blood and pushes it out during a vigorous trial.
D.The heart enlarges and becomes stronger routinely during a vigorous trial.
79.What could be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The more sugar muscles store, the thicker the fibers in them become.
B.The more sugar a muscle consumes, the less it tends to store next time.
C.The more sugar the muscles of an athlete store, the longer time they can work.
D.The amount of sugar in muscles largely depends on when they refuel at the nest meal.
80.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Strong Heart and World-champion B.Strength, Fitness and Endurance
C.Body Building and Muscles D.Resources of Strength

(2022·天津南开·统考一模)My generation — people born after 1990 — are accustomed to “all-in-platform” life, where we use mobile apps of different platforms to do almost everything in life.
For instance, I ordered a cup of coffee on Monday using an online delivery app. Then, I called a taxi by tapping on the app of a ride-booking service. Next, I bought some necessities on shopping platform Taobao. That done, I moved on to various other online destinations to get my daily fix of music, reading, social networking and so forth.
Platforms now play an increasingly important role in almost all aspects of day-to-day life, not just in economic and political processes. Consumption and social interaction are closely linked to platforms now.
But, I began to get confused recently. I thought I was being treated differently. My friend and I called a taxi at the same time on a ride-hailing platform (打车平台) and found that for the same destination, the prices were different. The price indicated on my phone was higher. One of the potential reasons could have been that I regularly use the ride-hailing platform and have a higher ranking while my friend doesn’t use it that often. So, the ride-hailing platform offers discounts to newbies like her, to attract and have such customers.
China’s latest efforts in regulating monopolistic or improper market behavior are of great significance in protecting consumers’ lawful rights.
“The essence of platform-based monopoly (垄断) is that a large number of users are gathered on only a select few platform companies, leading to uneven data gathering different platforms. But in China some platforms use their own data and traffic (流量) to expand capital in a disorderly way,” said Wang Yong, deputy director of the Institute of Economics at Tinghua University.
Data monopoly also brought another inconvenience for comumers — platforms block links to each other. For instance, link to WeChat Pay of Tencent is not available on Alibuba’s Taobao while there is no Alipay link on JD app’s payment options.
Last year, Meituan was charged with preventing customers from using Alipay as a payment option on Meituan apps and platforms.
In July, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology launched a six-month special rectification (专项治理) for the internet industry, asking platform operators to stop blocking each other’s link.
“More efforts should also be made to strike a good balance between personal information protection and interconnectivity between platforms Companies are being encouraged to further develop data encryption (加密) technology so that the data are available but not visible.”

(2022·天津南开·统考一模)Yasmin, a two-year-old from Bodmin, Cornwall, the UK, was playing with a toy in a local park on Sunday when a bird grabbed it away. Her father, Matthew Blanchard, said the gull(鸥)“dived in and grabbed” the doll, named Baby, when Yasmin dropped it while walking. The gull eventually dropped the toy on the roof of a nearby school and it was rescued from there by some workers.
Mr. Blanchard said: “Yasmin was happily playing on the swings and taking her baby down the slide. There were lots of seagulls in the park, and she managed to drop the baby as she was walking up the hill. The seagull took the opportunity and dived in and grabbed it.”
Mr. Blanchard said Yasmin was “crying” as other gulls joined in, fighting for the toy. “I thought once it realised it wasn't food it would let it go, but then all the other seagulls thought it had some food on it, so they all dive-bombed the baby dolly,” he added. One of the gulls got hold of the doll and took it up onto the roof of a nearby school, where it eventually dropped it.
“I had to get her out of the park because she was so upset,” Mr. Blanchard said. “I convinced her that somebody would be able to get it down for her another day, but I couldn't see any way of us getting it back.” Mr. Blanchard said his daughter was so upset she talked about nothing else over the following days.
The family contacted Bodmin Town Council who sent a worker to get the doll back on Tuesday enabling a reunion between Yasmin and Baby that evening. “It was just a small gesture which meant a lot to Yasmin. She was over the moon when she got that baby back and she hasn't let it go since.” Mr. Blanchard said.
Marie Tonkin-Couch, the council receptionist who dealt with the request, said: “The member of staff was a bit surprised when we asked them to go and get the doll, but it was an easy rescue as they just needed to climb up a ladder.” Ms. Tonkin-Couch said she had not heard of a gull stealing someone's toy before. “It was nice to be able to get it back to her when you have kids, you know how precious toys are to them. (2021·天津南开·南开中学校考二模)A T-shirt that constantly monitors the heart's activity and detects abnormalities could help protect people against stroke. The T-shirt, which can be washed up to 35 times before it needs replacing, has been developed to improve the detection of dangerous heart conditions like atrial fibrillation(心房颤动),which causes an irregular heart rhythm and raises the risk of stroke.
At least one million people in Britain are known to have this condition; however, it's estimated that at least another 50(), 000 have it but haven't yet been diagnosed because they have no obvious symptoms. Some will have symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness and fatigue; but a large number of people have no idea they're ill until they suffer a stroke.
Detecting atrial fibrillation involves carrying out an ECG(心电图).Conventional ECGs are done in a hospital and involve highly trained teams of staff attaching up to 24 separate electrodes(电 极)to different parts of the body to measure electrical signals. But most patients experience abnormal rhythms only intermittently(间歇地). This means the chance of picking them up during a short hospital check is slim.
Doctors sometimes issue patients with a device called a Holter monitor to wear under their clothes to try to pick up cardiac(心脏的)problems. This is an electronic box which clips onto your waistband and is connected to a series of electrodes worn on the upper part of your body. But the box itself is quite bulky, hard to hide beneath clothing and involves a dozen or more wires being attached to the patient's chest.
The Cardioskin T-shirt, which is made from cotton, could be a much more convenient alternative and can be worn 24 hours a day—meaning it is more likely to pick up any abnormal rhythms in the patients heart. It has 15 tiny electrodes woven into the material which are strategically placed around the chest area to track the electrical signals from the heart as they travel across the main part of your body.
The electrodes are powered by a battery which can be removed easily when you need to wash the T-shirt and feed results to a microchip which then sends them out wirelessly to an app. This converts(转换)the data into an easy-to-read chart showing if the heart rate is abnormal. The results are shared with the patient's doctor so they can check the patient's heart without having to call them into the hospital.
Martin Cowie, a professor of cardiology at Imperial College London, said, "Cardioskin could be an important development for cardiologists.”
96.How many British people are having dangerous heart conditions according to the text
A.Less than 0.5 million. B.Less than I million,
C.At least 1.5 million. D.At least 2 million.
97.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
