All of them representattempts over the centuries to explore Earth’s furthestcorners. Among these is the Esmeralda, the earliestwreck from the age of the European exploration ofAsia. Today, some 500 years after the Esmeralda setsail, there is little – if any – land on our planet leftunexplored. We have more detailed maps of the Moon, and even of Venus and Mars, than we do of Earth’sown sea bed.Take notes quickly! Ruins of ancient cities like Neapolis.2 Given our limited knowledge, it is perhaps no surprisethat exploration of the oceans continues to lead todiscoveries in various scientific fields. As with thediscovery of the Esmeralda, many archaeological findsare made in shallow waters near the coast. These maysometimes include whole cities buried beneath thewaves. One such find is the ancient Roman city ofNeápolis, discovered off the coast of Tunisia. Believedto have been buried underwater by a tsunami in thefourth century AD, the ruins of Neápolis are almost2,000 years old. The remaining streets and buildingsoffer a window into a fascinating period in our history. However, we are only beginning to overcome thechallenges of pressure, darkness and extreme cold atvast depths. Fragments of the past lying deep beneaththe oceans are still waiting to be discovered. What has been discovered in the ocean depths Take notes quickly!重点词汇lead to 导致 ; 通向discoveries 发现 ; 发觉 ; 被发现的事物As with 如同,和-----一样,就----而言,Esmeralda 埃斯梅拉达archaeological 考古的;考古学的;polis 城邦 ; 城市 ; 政治 ;off the coast 在海面上extreme cold 极冷 ; 极端寒冷3 Amazing biological discoveries are also being made. The dark zones of the oceans may contain up to90 per cent of the planet’s fish. In these waters, more than 200 metres deep, where light cannot reach, are extraordinary creatures thatappear as if they are straight out of science fiction. Imagine bone-white coral 6,000 metres below the ocean’s surface, growing at the rate of only one or two millimetres per year. Some of these could be 4,000 years old. Swimming through these black depths is the barreleye, a strange fish with eyes that can look upwards through its transparent forehead. In the very deepest ocean trenches that are more than 8,000 metres below the surface, the pressure is equivalent to 50 aeroplanes stacked one on top of another. Yet there is still life to be found, even around the deep-sea volcanic openings. These discoveries all help us understand the capacity for life on our planet, even in the most extreme circumstances.Extraordinary deep-sea creatures such as bone-white coral and the barreleye. What has been discovered in the ocean depths Take notes quickly!重点词汇more than 非常,极其 ;straight out 直出science fiction 科幻小说surface 表面 ; 奥斯古德曲面at the rate of 按…之比率a strange fish 怪人 ; 奇人、怪人below the surface 在表面下be equivalent to 相当于 ; 等同于one on top of another 重叠still life 静物 ; 静物画 ;The substance known as “fire ice”.What has been discovered in the ocean depths 4 Furthermore, the oceans are a valuable source of natural resources, some ofwhich are completely new to us. Most notable of these is China’s discoveryof an ice-like substance, known as “fire ice”, under the South China Sea.In addition, China’s underwater vessels, such as the Jiaolong and ShenhaiYongshi, have been exploring waters at depths of thousands of metres. The Jiaolong even holds the record for the deepest dive by a mannedsubmarine, at 7,062 metres, giving China its place alongside the world’s top ocean explorers. The research conducted by these vessels is giving scientists a greater understanding of how the sea bed was formed, as well as helping identify areas for deep-sea drilling, taking deep-sea exploration into a whole new era.Take notes quickly!重点词汇natural resources 天然资源;自然资源completely new 全新的be known as 被称为 ; 被认为是 ;South China Sea 南中国海 ; 中国南海 ; 中南海In addition 此外,另外 ; 加之 ; 除…之外thousands of 几千 ; 成千上万conducted by 指挥as well as 以及,既…又…,deep-sea drilling 深海钻探We still need to explore the unknown worlds. What is the main idea of this paragraph 5 Being a tough environment of complete darkness, enormous pressure and intense cold, the ocean depths have long been beyond the reach of human exploration. However, through closer international scientific, economic and cultural cooperation, we are all becoming part of a global mission to open up our planet’s final frontier. Humankind is entering a new age of oceanic discovery, and the world beneath the waves may one day be almost as familiar to us as the land we walk upon todayTake notes quickly!重点词汇complete darkness 完全黑暗 ; 完美暗黑ocean depths 深海part of 部分open up 将开封 ; 拆开 ; 开放Humankind 人 ; 全人类new age 新时代 ; 新世纪 ;oceanic 海洋的 ; 大海的 ; 与海洋有关的one day 一天;一日be familiar to 熟悉 ; 为…所熟悉Completing!OVER THE CENTURIES: sailing across oceans to explore Earth’s furthest cornersOcean explorationMODERN AGE: exploring 1___________deep seaCompleting!2______________ explorationFinding ancient ruins in 3_____________.Working to overcome challenges and makediscoveries at 4__________.Example:5__________________Archaeologicalshallow watersvast depthsthe ruins of NeapolisCompleting!6 __________explorationContaining about 90 per cent of 7_______________.Helping comprehend 8_______________________.Examples:9_______________ 10_____________11_______________________________________Biologicalthe planet’s fishbone-white coralthe capacity for life on our planetthe barreleyelife to be found even around the deep-sea volcanic openingsCompleting!Discovery of natural resourcesDiscovering new natural resources.Studying 12 __________.Identifying areas for 13_______________.Examples:14__________15_______________________“fire ice”deep-sea drillingthe sea bedChina’s underwater vesselsAs you read, notice the discourse markersused in the text, eg in addition, also, however, furthermore, as well as.
