Ordering takeouts is very popular nowadays because it is convenient. More than 60 percent of the
people in China order takeout food at least twice a week. If people don’t want to eat out, they can just order takeouts on the smartphone and wait for it to be delivered. What about people living in ancient times Did they eat takeouts
In fact, there was takeout as far back as the Song Dynasty. According to history books, Emperor Xiaozong (1127—1194) liked to order takeouts late at night. His servants then went around the city to pick up the dishes and brought them back to the palace.
Ordinary people also ordered takeouts. Restaurant waiters would go out into the streets and shout out which dishes could be ordered that day. After hearing the waiters, people could then place an order. Later, delivery workers would bring food to their homes. A spoon of pickles(榨菜) can sometimes make a meal taste better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickles”. It refers to the videos that people watch while eating that make their food seem tastier.
The topic received more than 16 million clicks on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people joined in the discussion. Instead of having meals with friends and family members, many young people in China are kept company by TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the “digital pickles”.
Can this habit affect your diet According to a recent research, you may eat more! The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating habits during four days, including eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction(干扰). The results showed that volunteers who ate with a distraction took in much more calorie(卡路里).
To find out the reason, the team also invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to an audio clip(音频剪辑) about another person eating, and the other listened to a clip that made them think about the food they were eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals. When eating with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted. We are less able to notice that we are eating much, which leads to eating more than expected unconsciously.
This works not only for audios and videos, but other difficult tasks as well. Another research project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which need lots of attention, trick many people into overeating. The team invited 120 people to do different tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study suggests that if you’re eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a
very difficult task, you’re less likely to be able to tell how full you feel,” one of the authors Martin Yeomans explained.

Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的 ) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. For example, on the back of the 5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times, many emperors would go there and pray ( 祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a "banknote tour" when he was 21. "I want to finish a ceremonial ( 有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country," Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.
