“Legend”,“hero”and“genius”are commonplace in footballing circles. The greatest of all time can be Pele, who remains the only player to have won three World Cups and almost reached a goal per game, scoring 1,279 in 1,363 appearances.
Born in Brazil in 1940, Edson Arantes do Nascimento was given the nickname Pele at school. Later, he played for local amateur teams throughout his youth and developed his skills as well as physical strength.
Pele signed professional papers in 1956, joining top-flight Brazilian side Santos FC. On his debut (首秀), he scored and by the following year, he was the league’s top scorer and called up to the Brazilian national team. In 1958, he scored 58 goals in Santos FC-a record that remains unbeaten. He remained at Santos for 19 seasons, and retired from Brazilian club football in 1974.
The following year he signed for North American Soccer League side New York Cosmos. In his first public appearance in Boston, many fans crowded to the field when he scored, causing him injury and being carried from the field of play on a stretcher(担架). Pele’s last professional match took place in August 1977, with Pele scoring his last goal,a free kick for Cosmos, from thirty yards.
Following his retirement from footballar, Pele dedicated his life to ambassador(大使) worker, being appointed UN ambassador for ecology and the environment in 1992 and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1994. University of Edinburgh awarded him an honorary degree for his contribution to humanitarian and environmental causes, as well as his sporting achievements, and an honorary knighthood followed, with Queen Elizabeth II presenting the honor in 1997.

C
I have lived in rural America for nine years, first in Michigan, where I got my PhD; then in central Illinois and now in Indiana, where I am a professor. In a place where most people have lived the whole of their lives, I feel like a stranger. There are few things I enjoy more than complaining about my geographic isolation. I’m a vegetarian, so there’s nowhere to go for a nice dinner that isn’t 50 miles away. I’m black, so there’s nowhere to get my hair done that doesn’t involve another 50-mile drive. And the closest major airport is two hours away.
I recite these gripes to my friends. We all have grand ideas about what life would be like if only we did that, or lived there. And there’s this; I really don’t intend to change most of the things I complain about. Griping is seductive on those days when happiness requires too much energy. But it also makes me lose sight of the fact that I was born and grew up in Nebraska and have lived most of my life in one of the plains states. When I go to the coasts, I am struck by how unappealing big-city living can be.
While I may not love where I live, there are plenty of people who are proud to call this place home. At a party with colleagues, I was going on about everything I couldn’t stand in our town when I noticed that they were silent and shifting uncomfortably. That moment forced a change in plaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect life. By focusing on gripes, I risk missing out on precious moments of appreciation. When I get home, I stand on my balcony, look into the night sky and see the stars. I know that I have absolutely nothing to complain about.
28.What causes the author’s loneliness
A.Dietary habits. B.Racial prejudice.
C.Educational differences. D.Identity confusion.
29.What does the underlined word “seductive” mean in paragraph 3
A.Attractive. B.Temporary. C.Violent. D.Flexible.
30.How might the author feel about himself when the atmosphere changed at a party
A.Humbled. B.Angry. C.Touched. D.Calm.
31.What does the author realize in the end
A.Every day is beautiful. B.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
C.Human must value lives themselves. D.Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.D 31.D
根据第一段“I have lived in rural America for nine years, first in Michigan, where I got my PhD; then in central Illinois and now in Indiana, where I am a professor.
故选A。
根据最后一段中“At a party with colleagues, I was going on about everything I couldn’t stand in our town when I noticed that they were silent and shifting uncomfortably. That moment forced a change in plaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect life. By focusing on gripes, I risk missing out on precious moments of appreciation. When I get home, I stand on my balcony, look into the night sky and see the stars. I know that I have absolutely nothing to complain about.(在一次与同事的聚会上,我正滔滔不绝地谈论着镇上所有我无法忍受的事情,这时我注意到他们都沉默不语,不安地移动着身子。那一刻迫使我改变了。抱怨可能会让你放松,但接受也一样。没有完美的人生。专注于抱怨,我可能会错过感激的珍贵时刻。当我回到家,我站在阳台上,仰望夜空,看星星。我知道我完全没有什么可抱怨的)”可知,当聚会的气氛发生变化时,作者冷静了,开始思考自己的行为会带来的不良后果。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Complaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect life. By focusing on gripes, I risk missing out on precious moments of appreciation. When I get home, I stand on my balcony, look into the night sky and see the stars. I know that I have absolutely nothing to complain about.(抱怨可能会让你放松,但接受也一样。没有完美的人生。专注于抱怨,我可能会错过感激的珍贵时刻。当我回到家,我站在阳台上,仰望夜空,看星星。我知道我完全没有什么可抱怨的)”推知,作者最后意识到不要因小失大。故选D。
D
Technology caused the problem of false news, and it’s easy to think that technology can solve it and that we only need to find the right technology to solve the problem. But this approach ignores valuable lessons concerned with how we acquire knowledge.
To understand how false news comes, start with an example. Imagine you’re out for drinks when one of your friends shocks the table with an unproven story about a local famous people. The story is so shocking you’re not sure it could be right. But then, here’s your good friend, putting their reputation on the line. Maybe you should believe it.
This is an instance of what philosophers call testimony (证词). It’s similar to the sort of testimony given in a courtroom, but it is less formal and much more frequent. Testimony happens any time you believe something because someone else proves the accuracy of the information. Most of our knowledge about the world is secondhand knowledge that comes to us through testimony. After all, we can’t each do all of our own scientific research, or make our own maps of distant cities.
Social media has strange testimonial rules, and it is hard to solve the problem of false news. On Facebook, Twitter and similar platforms, people don’t always mean what they say, and we don’t always expect them to. A the informal Twitter: advertisement goes: “A retweet (转发推文) is not an approval.” When a well-known politician was caught retweeting false statistics about race and crime, he told Fox News it wasn’t a big deal: “Am I gonna check every statistic All it was is a retweet. It wasn’t from me.” Intellectually (理智上), we know that people do this all of the time on social media, and pass along news without checking its accuracy, but many of us listen to them anyway. The information they share is just too attractive to ignore — especially when it is about our existing political beliefs.
32.Why do we tend to believe surprising news over drinks
A.We’ve confirmed it.
B.We may be drunken.
C.We find it amazing.
D.We trust in our friends.
33.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 3
A.The statement in court.
B.The talk in a restaurant.
C.The evidence of a crime.
D.The testimony of a philosopher.
34.Why is it easy for us to believe the content producers on social media
A.We are tolerant of their actions.
B.Social media have issued odd regulations.
C.We will identify with them readily.
D.Social media don’t check the information.
35.What may be the best title for the text
A.How to Fix False News
B.How Incorrect Information Arrives
C.What Information to Acquire
D.When Testimony Disturbs Audience
根据第二段“Imagine you’re out for drinks when one of your friends shocks the table with an unproven story about a local famous people. The story is so shocking you’re not sure it could be right. But then, here’s your good friend, putting their reputation on the line. Maybe you should believe it. (想象一下,当你出去喝酒时,你的一个朋友说了一个关于当地名人的未经证实的故事,震惊了整个桌子。这个故事太令人震惊了,你不确定它是否正确。但现在,你的好朋友冒着名誉风险。也许你应该相信。)”可知,你是因为相信自己的朋友才相信这则消息。故选D。
33.词义猜测题。根据划线单词前一句“This is an instance of what philosophers call testimony (证词).(这就是哲学家们所说的“证词”。)”以及“It’s similar to the sort of testimony given in a courtroom, (它类似于法庭上的证词,)”可知,这个“it”指的正是哲学家所说的“证词”,而这个证词指的是第二段的“Imagine you’re out for drinks when one of your friends shocks the table with an unproven story about a local famous people. The story is so shocking you’re not sure it could be right. But then, here’s your good friend, putting their reputation on the line. Maybe you should believe it. (想象一下,当你出去喝酒时,你的一个朋友说了一个关于当地名人的未经证实的故事,震惊了整个桌子。这个故事太令人震惊了,你不确定它是否正确。但现在,你的好朋友冒着名誉风险。也许你应该相信。)”可知,这个it所指的正是在餐厅里的谈话。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“Testimony happens any time you believe something because someone else proves the accuracy of the information.(任何时候,当你相信某件事,因为别人证明了该信息的准确性时,证词就会发生。)”和最后一段“Intellectually (理智上), we know that people do this all of the time on social media, and pass along news without checking its accuracy, but many of us listen to them anyway. The information they share is just too attractive to ignore-especially when it is about our existing political beliefs.(理智上,我们知道人们在社交媒体上一直都是这样做的,并且在不检查准确性的情况下传递新闻,但我们中的许多人还是会听它们。他们分享的信息太有吸引力了,不容忽视——尤其是当它涉及到我们现有的政治信仰时。)”可推断,我们会很容易地与社交媒体上的内容生产者产生共鸣。故选C。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。自我接纳是与他人发展健康关系的重要一环。本文从四个方面介绍了如何爱自己(接纳自己):了解及学会奖励自己、不自爱的危害、克服自己的消极看法、避免完美主义以及学会奖励自己。
36.由空后的“It also means living your own life as honestly as you can.(这也意味着你要尽可能诚实地过自己的生活)”和该段主题可知,空处与这一句是递进关系,都是在讲爱自己意味着什么的相关内容,且F项中means 一词也与空后一句中的also means相呼应。
37.本段的主题句是“Know the dangers of a lack of self-love.(知道缺乏自爱的危险)”可知,本句是对该主题句的进一步说明。空前一句“It can lead to a harmful dependence on other.(这会导致对他人的有害依赖)”中的It can也和E项中的It can also相呼应。
故选A。

A New Addition to the Family
For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.
However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.
Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Upon hearing the teacher’s feedback, Victor’s parents got lost in thought.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Victor realized that his parents still cared for him.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Upon hearing the teacher’s feedback, Victor’s parents got lost in thought. Since their second child Linda was born, they have devoted all their attention to her. To some degree, they neglected victor’s feelings. After all, he wanted to share the love from parents with Linda. So they made a decision that they should treat the two children equally. Gradually, something changed in the family. After school Victor often found some delicious food and new toys on his desk. When he did his homework, his father came to his room and sat beside him, reading a book quietly, which made him comfortable and warm. At that time, his mother was taking care of his sister Linda. After he finished his homework, his mother asked him to play with Linda. Seeing her sweet smile, he felt so happy.
Victor realized that his parents still cared for him.So he was determined to help his parents take good care of his sister. Having finished his homework, he learned to clean their rooms and do all the chores that he could. While his mother was cooking, he played with his sister happily. He came to realize that he should take responsibility for the family because he grew up.

Malavath Poorna,a 13-year-old girl from India,is the daughter of a poor farm laborer who earns barely $600 annually. Belonging to the lowest Indian social class,Poorna had determined to make a mark and be a source of inspiration to other backward people belonging to her community. Therefore, with the encouragement from her parents,Poorna participated in a training program meant for outdoor activities.
While preparing for her Everest climb,Poorna took training in the mountains of Darjeeling and Ladakh. At the end of the strict training sessions, she and another boy of 18 called Anand were the only two selected to climb Everest because they showed “a higher degree of toughness and endurance”.
Malavath Poorna proved that the difference between the impossible and the possible lies in whether a person is strong-willed or not. On 25th of May 2014,she along with 16-year-old Anand Kumar, ascended(登上) the 29,029-foot peak(山峰) and created history by becoming the world’s youngest woman to ascend Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world.
Three days after she arrived at the Everest base camp on 15 April,2014,sixteen local people got killed by a deadly avalanche(雪崩) on the Nepalese side. However, this could not stop Poorna from her peak. Moreover, Poorna’s accomplishment is even more extraordinary since she climbed the peak from the more difficult Tibetan side instead of taking the easier Nepalese side which most climbers chose. Her ascent has been called a rare achievement by Mingma Sherpa,a Nepalese guide who has climbed all fourteen of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters.
24. Why did Malavath Poorna take part in a training program

Overspending can be defined as spending beyond one’s means, and is not rarely seen nowadays. According to a recent report, more than one-fourth of adults surveyed in 2020 had one or more bills that they were unable to pay in full that month.
While every individual’s spending habits are unique to their circumstances, a few common potential issues tend to be responsible for overspending.
Lifestyle creep, a financial trap, where you spend more money as you make more money, for example, often accounts for unrecognized overspending. Individuals that lack a decision-making process for making purchases can also find it difficult to control their spending.
Media and advertisements can also lead to overspending. Marketing strategies aim to create a feeling of scarcity (稀少) for consumers with phrases like “almost sold out” or “two tickets remaining” when they are making online purchases. Emails from favorite sellers can give consumers the impression that they are saving money by taking advantage of a sale, and roadside billboards can lead individuals to make impulsive (冲动的) purchases.
Social pressures to enjoy dinners out and vacations with family and friends may be a push for younger people, who see others enjoying these activities through social media platforms like Instagram. “People think spending makes you happy,” Elizabeth Dunn, professor at the University of British Columbia and chief science officer at Happy Money, says. “But for many people, it’s these values of being true to yourself that make you happy.”
Dunn notes that, “Failures in self-control in the finance can cause dire consequences. Financial stress, for example, has been linked to physical health struggles, problems in close relationships, and stress in retirement.”
“Dealing with overspending should start in bite - size pieces. Small and manageable changes over time are more likely to stick to in the long run. Instead of relying on willpower, setting specific goals and building a foundation with a budget is an effective way.” adds Dunn.
28. Why is a recent report mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To explain what overspending is.
B. To stress the harm of overspending.
C. To tell a way to stop overspending.
D. To show overspending is common.
29. What do paragraphs 3~5 mainly talk about
A. Possible causes of overspending.
B. Typical unhealthy spending habits.
C. Some unavoidable financial traps
D. Issues resulting from overspending.
30. What does the underlined word “dire” in paragraph 6 probably mean
A. Pleasant. B. Controllable. C. Terrible. D. Acceptable.
31. What is Elizabeth Dunn’s advice on overcoming overspending
A. Making a reasonable budget.
B. Relying on personal willpower.
C. Setting grand and general goals.
D. Starting changing on the whole.
D 29. A 30. C 31. A

At first glance, it seems that giant pandas (大熊猫) might not be good at hide- and-seek. With their black and white coats, they appear to have a hard time matching their backgrounds and avoiding detection by their enemies. But a new study finds that the unique markings, in fact, provide effective camouflage (伪装) and help them disappear into their surroundings. Scientists have long wondered what function the black-and-white coloring plays.
For their study, researchers analyzed photos of giant pandas in their natural habitats. “We’ve found that the animals are very well camouflaged because they use habitats with dark and lighting conditions, and also snow during some time of the year,” study author Tim Caro of the University of Bristol and the University of California, Davis, tells Treehugger.
They found that the black patches (块) of fur match primarily shade and dark tree trunks. They also match the ground, rocks and leaves. The white fur patches match snow, rocks, and waxy, bright leaves. Sometimes pandas also have patches of pale brown fur and those match rocks, ground and shady background areas.
The researchers also explored a type of environmental camouflage known as disruptive coloration. That’s when highly contrasting patterns or very visible boundaries on an animal break up its body outline. They found that the black and white borders on the panda’s coat make it less noticeable, particularly from farther away.
It might seem a bit confusing because giant pandas are very easy to spot at a zoo, for instance. But the environment and the viewer make a difference.
“We modelled their coloration through enemies’ eyes as well as how humans see them so we are sure of the results.” Caro says.
“It seems that giant pandas appear easily noticeable to us because of short viewing distances and unnatural backgrounds, when we see them, either in photographs or at the zoo,it is almost always from close up, and often against a backdrop that doesn’t reflect their natural habitats,” says author Nick Scott-Samuel of the University of Bristol. “From a more realistic enemy’s view, the giant panda is actually rather well camouflaged.”
32. What is the general first impression of giant pandas
A. They like staying away from humans.
B. They are really good at hide-and-seek.
C. They match the backgrounds very well.
D. They can be easily detected by enemies
33 What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Tree trunks. B. Pale brown pandas.
C. Black fur patches. D. Shady background areas
34. What can we learn about giant pandas from Nick Scott-Samuel’s words
A. They are less noticeable in natural environments.
B. They can be easily noticed even from farther away.
C. They often disappear into backgrounds in a zoo.
D. They can not camouflage from an enemy’s view.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Giant Pandas Hide Themselves From Tourists
B. Giant Pandas Are Actually Good at Camouflaging
C. The Black-and-white Coloring Proves Appealing
D. You Are More Likely to Spot Giant Pandas in Nature

故填when。
故填were stuck。
the 40-year-old man指上文提到的Sivley。故填the。
故填what。
故填 to be compensated。

One day, father, mother and I were on our way to Hubble's store on the Main Street to get those things needed for the upcoming Christmas. As we passed Eaton's department store, we stopped as usual to do a bit of window shopping.
“What a silly dress!” mother suddenly pointed to a dress in the fancy window. “Who would need such a big red dress ”
Then, totally out of character, father went to mother and started dancing on the sidewalk as if they were at a dancing party.
“Dear, it is for dancing parties,” father laughed. “I hope I could buy it for you as a Christmas gift.”
“Oh, stop that!” she ordered and her cheeks became redder than usual. Mother, of all people, was not one to spend money on things that were not practical. “There are things we need more than this.”
As we continued down the street, mother turned back many times. “My goodness! They should show something a person really needs!”
But father liked buying something that mother might not really need, whenever the budget allowed. Of course, he'd get a scolding, but it was all done with the best intention.
Like the time he brought home the electric stove years ago. In our old kitchen, mother was still cooking year-round on a wooden stove. In summer, the kitchen would be so hot that even the houseflies wouldn't come inside. One day, Dad surprised her with a fancy new electric stove. She protested, saying that the wooden stove cooked just fine, that the electric stove was too dear and that it would cost too much to run it. Since then she only used it on special occasions.
On Christmas Eve, we drove past the store again and found that the big red dress was gone!
“Who’d be fool enough to buy such a big red dress ” mother whispered in disbelief as we drove away.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I quickly stole a look at Dad.

I’ll never forget what I saw the next morning.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I quickly stole a look at Dad. He touched me with his elbow and shook his head. But the excitement in his eyes confirmed his secret. Suddenly my heart was filled with more love for my father than I thought it could hold! But I casually turned around and caught mother still shaking her head in disbelief. She lowered the window and had a final look as we rode on up the street. I was almost certain that I detected a disappointment in her eyes.
I’ll never forget what I saw the next morning. I watched as mother opened a large box that read “Eaton’s Big Red” on its lid. With trembling hands she touched the nice material of Big Red. Her face was as bright as the star that shone on our Christmas tree in the corner of the small room. “You shouldn’t have…” was her unsuccessful attempt at scolding Dad.
