Identity: The prince of Denmark
Intention: play the fencing match to show his sincere apology to Laertes for accidentally killing his father.
Emotion: sincere (apologize to Laertes)—excited (play the match) —worried (Gertrude collapses)—angry (want to know who the murderer is; kill the king)—relieved (after the killing)
Characteristics:
Quick-witted, brave (good performance in the match; quick reaction)
Hamlet
Claudius
Identity: The king of Denmark
Intention: kill Hamlet either by Laertes poisoned sword or the poisoned wine
Emotion: expectant (start the match)—calm/determined (plan to poison the wine)—pretend to be caring (cheer for Hamlet and put the poison) —shocked/worried (Gertrude drinks the wine) —restless (see his vicious plan exposed)
Characteristics:
Scheming ; Deceitful (ally with Laertes to kill Hamlet; his vicious plan to poison the wine; say beautiful words to Hamlet during the match)
Identity: The queen of Denmark
Intention: watch the match and hope to celebrate Hamlet’s success.
Emotion: happy(watch the match)—caring /happy (drink the wine) —surprised (find the truth)—sorrowful/uneasy (dying)
Characteristics:
Loving (love and care about Hamlet)
Gertrude
Identity: Son of Polonius
Intention: take revenge on Hamlet.
Emotion: determined (start the match)—hesitant (whether to wound Hamlet with the poisoned sword—regretful (wounded by Hamlet and see the tragedy)
Characteristics:
Adventurous (attend the match and poison the sword)
Prioritize family honor (not accept Hamlet’s apology)

Show Time
Work in your group and read aloud/act out the scene (from Gertrude drinking the wine to “they hear the sound of the army approaching”).
Remember to read each line based on your analysis of your character.
