It was a school trip. My friends and I were taking photos in the street of Vienna, trying to record the beauty of a foreign country. The change in climate had made my contacts(隐形眼镜) dry out quite often, so I was wearing my glasses.
But I didn't think the glasses looked good on me, so for any photo I was in, I would take them off. When I took them off in front of Vienna State Opera, I heard a tiny "ping!"—a screw(螺丝) fell off my glasses and they separated in half.
Hurriedly, my friends and I began to search for the tiny screw. We looked everywhere, but it was nowhere to be found. I was close to tears. How could I enjoy the rest of my trip if I could see nothing clearly !
Just at that moment, my friend saw a store with a sign in German whose windows were full of various pairs of glasses. To try our luck, we raced into the store. Not speaking any German, we did our best to explain the situation. A friendly old man smiled gently and took my glasses into the back of the store.
After a while, he came back into the room. Smiling softly, he handed me my glasses, fully fixed. I tried to ask the man how much it would cost. However, the man just smiled at me and said, "For you I will do it for free. "
That is the kindest thing a stranger has ever done for me. While I was in a foreign country and unable to even speak his language, this man, with a business to run, still gifted me that tiny, necessary screw —thus the ability to see for the rest of my trip and also a memory to be treasured.

Most kids know it's wrong to shout at or hit someone. But what if that someone is Alexa — an AI (Artificial Intelligence人工智能) speaker, or Roomba — a robot cleaner
A new study by Teresa Flanagan, a developmental psychologist from Duke University, found that kids aged four to eleven felt neither Roomba nor Alexa should be shouted at or attacked. However, that feeling weakened as kids grew into their teens.
Flanagan was inspired to do the research after watching some movies about robots. "In those movies, we see adults interacting with robots in terrible ways, " said Flanagan. "But how would kids interact with them "
Flanagan invited 127 children aged four to eleven to take part in the study. The kids were asked to watch a video of the two devices(设备)and then answer a few questions, like whether it was wrong to attack AI devices and how smart and sensitive they thought Alexa was compared to Roomba. Flanagan studied the survey data and found something encouraging.
Overall, kids decided that both Alexa and Roomba, unlike humans, probably weren't ticklish (怕 痒) and wouldn't feel pain when they got hit. However, they gave Alexa, but not Roomba, high marks for mental and emotional abilities, such as being able to think or getting upset when someone was mean to it.
"Young children think Alexa, even without a body, has emotions and a mind, " Flanagan said. “But they don't think Roomba does — maybe that has something to do with Alexa's ability to have verbal (语 音的)communication. ”
Although they believed the two intelligent devices had different abilities, children across all ages agreed it was wrong to hit or shout at the machines. However, the older kids got, the more they reported it would be more acceptable to attack devices.
The findings offer new ideas about the changing relationship between children and intelligent devices and raise important questions about how we are supposed to treat them in general and as parents. Should adults, for example, model good behavior for their kids by thanking AI devices for their help
For now, Flanagan is trying to understand why children think it is wrong to attack intelligent devices.
27. Why does Flanagan mention some movies in Paragraph 3
A. To present how robots influence children.
B. To stress the importance of Al technology.
C. To explain where the research idea came from.
D. To show the popularity of children's TV shows.
28. What can we learn from the passage
A. Adults set a good example on treating Al.
B. Flanagan studied the data with the help of Al.
C. Alexa has more physical feelings than Roomba.
D. Younger kids hold a friendlier attitude to AI devices.
29. What will Flanagan probably do next
A. Examine what good manners kids show toward Al.
B. Test whether Alexa is much smarter than Roomba.
C. Survey how adults interact with intelligent devices.
D. Study why kids think AI is worthy of nice treatment.
D
Awe is the feeling of amazement and respect mixed with surprise. Research shows that awe experiences decrease stress and anxiety and increase positive(积极的) emotions and overall satisfaction in life. It can also improve our relationships, making us more likely to help others and more supported. Most of us connect awe with something unusual and beautiful: nature, music or a spiritual experience. But ordinary people can bring about awe too. Research shows we can be awed by our nearest and dearest — the people sitting next to us, or talking on the other end of the phone. Psychologists call this interpersonal awe.
Often, this interpersonal awe is how people respond (反应) to life's big changes, like seeing a baby's first steps or a friend fighting against cancer. Yet interpersonal awe happens in our everyday life, too. John Bargh, a psychologist, said he was "truly awestruck" by his then-5-year-old daughter while dining in a McDonald's years ago. When she heard another child crying across the restaurant, she took the toy from her Happy Meal, walked over and handed it to him.
We can't make someone else behave in an awesome way, but we can get prepared to notice it when they do and take steps to strengthen the emotion's positive effects.
To increase your chances of feeling awed by people around you, Marianna Graziosi, an expert in positive psychology, suggests you direct your attention to people's positive sides and catch them at their best. You may think your brother or friend is selfish; there may be a little truth to that, but it's never the whole story. "Try to find examples of him helping others or doing something great. In other words, become a field scientist, like Jane Goodall, " Graziosi said.
To help you recognize and remember a special experience, say out loud "Wow, that was awesome!" when awe strikes you. Enjoy it in the moment and tell others about it. This will strengthen your positive emotions. And recall it or write about it later. Studies show awe can be drawn again simply by remembering an awe experience.
When you feel awed by people around you, thank them and let them know just how much their actions affect you. This makes the other person feel good and can give your relationship an improvement.
And you'll also have high levels of happiness and psychological well-being.
Awe could be anywhere. Perhaps awe, while an ordinary response to the extraordinary, is also an extraordinary response to the ordinary.
30. You are likely to feel interpersonal awe when _______________.
A. you listen to a CD of a popular singer
B. you read a book about a famous person
C. you get a surprise help from your family
D. you watch a beautiful sunset with friends
31. By saying the underlined words in Paragraph 5, Graziosi suggests that we should __________.
A. read about how to get on with others
B. try to get a full picture of other people
C. watch carefully how others do their jobs
D. learn from an expert in positive psychology
32. The writer would probably agree that ______________________.
A. awe often comes from senses of satisfaction
B. awe moments are usually very difficult to create
C. nature provides the most awe in our everyday life
D. recalling awe experiences strengthens relationships
33. Which of the following would he the best title for the passage
A. Respond to Awe in Everyday Life B. Spread Awe to People Around
C. Express Thanks to Awesome People D. Take down Awesome Moments

(2022·北京海淀·统考二模)On the final day of the summer camp, Ada and Lydia stood below The Bear Crawl, the camp’s highest, hardest rope course. Lydia volunteered to go first. Hands before feet, Lydia began her crawl (爬) across the rope ladder.
“Go, Lydia, go! You’re a champion. You’ve got this!”Ada cheered from below. When Lydia made it all the way across, completing the challenge, Ada felt relieved for her friend but also nervous: it was her turn now.
Ada reached her arms out to the first rung on the rope ladder. Her arms felt shaky as she felt the ladder sway (摇摆) a little under her weight. She carefully walked her hands forward to the next rung. About halfway across the Bear Crawl, Ada was starting to feel a little more confident. With every rung, she was getting closer to the opposite platform. She could do this!
Ada reached out for the next rung, just as a strong wind made the rope ladder sway. Ada’s hand did not grasp the wood rung. Instead, her hand hit only air and continued downward, followed by her arm, her shoulder and the rest of her body!
Almost immediately, the harness (保护带) caught her. As Ada was lowered to the ground slowly, she could see all the other kids staring up at her. Ada’s face burned from embarrassment. When she finally reached the ground, she looked at her shoes and the ground.
“Can I try again ”Ada whispered, holding back tears.
The coach looked at her watch. “I’m sorry, Ada. We don’t have time.”
On the bus home, Ada rested her head against the window. Beside her, Lydia sat silent and thoughtful. “Hey, Ada ” Lydia said. “I couldn’t have made it across the ladder without you. I got so terrified in the middle, but then you shouted my name and I kept going.”
“You got scared ”Ada asked.
Lydia nodded, her eyes widening. “Super scared. I’m surprised I didn’t throw up on everybody below.”Ada smiled a little. “You were just unlucky that such a big wind came up,” continued Lydia.

(2022·北京海淀·统考二模)Keeping your family traditions alive is a wonderful way to create memories — and here’s why they are of great value.
Family is something special. Keeping your own family culture developing and alive is often the result of having family traditions. Traditions are one of the things that make your family unlike any other — something to be passed from generation to generation.
I bet you can think of one tradition you and your family have always done together and a whole lot of wonderful memories about it. Memories of moments spent together with the people you love are always a hot topic of conversation whenever you reconnect. Those memories — especially the ones involving family traditions — can last a lifetime.
When you have family traditions set in stone, whether they fall on a holiday, or on an important day for your family during the year, you always have something great to long for. Whether it’s baking cookies together, going on an outing in spring, or putting up paper cuts during the Spring Festival, traditions make any occasion special. And they can add a little excitement to your life when you need to take a breather from the boring and tiring daily work.
Family traditions provide consistency (稳定性). Life is always changing. Sometimes it feels like when you catch up and get used to the new things, something else comes out of nowhere and throws you off balance again. When you’re feeling lost, traditions can provide stability and make you feel grounded again.
Family traditions bind (凝聚) you all together in a way that nothing else can. Nothing brings you and your loved ones closer than getting together to celebrate traditions and enjoy each other’s company. Traditions remind you about everything your family is — where you came from, where you’re going, and how far you’ve come together.
Often times, it’s not just the most wonderful traditions that have the biggest influence. Even something as simple as eating a bowl of noodles on your birthday can strengthen the ties between you and the loved ones in your life. The most important and valuable memories of your life could be created from your family traditions, both the big and the small.
27.What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A.Big events are needed to strengthen family ties. B.Family values remind people of what truly matters.
C.Memories involving family traditions last a lifetime. D.Family traditions give people something good to expect.
28.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 shows ________.
A.family memories are helpful to deal with painful emotions
B.family traditions help people feel in control of their lives
C.keeping up with changes makes people feel confident
D.breaking family traditions throws people off balance
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.The Secret to Keeping Family Traditions Alive
B.The Possible Benefits of Valuing Life Memories
C.The Lasting Positive Influence of Family Traditions
D.The Key to Making Family Life Different and Special
(2022·北京海淀·统考二模)Friendly and trustworthy people are more likely to be picked for teams than those known for just their skill competence (能力), according to new research.
“We would think people are chosen because of the knowledge and skills they bring to the table. However, the research suggests people may often get picked because team members feel comfortable with them,” said Cynthia Maupin from Binghamton University. “People may be willing to sacrifice (牺牲) a bit in terms of performance in order to have a really enjoyable team experience.”
Maupin’s team focused on a number of MBA students to carry out their study. Students were randomly (随机地) divided into teams to work on class projects when a term began. Toward the end of the term, students were asked to form their own teams and talk about why they picked each member of their group. “We wanted to find out what people did to show others they might be a good teammate,” Maupin said.
The researchers specifically (具体地) looked at how students showed their human capital, the ability to do their tasks well, and their social capital, the degree to which they were friendly and trustworthy, to other students by studying their use of challenging or supportive voice:
● Challenging voice: Communicating in a way that challenges the present situation and focuses on new ideas.
● Supportive voice: Communicating in a way that strengthens social ties and trust.
“As might be expected, anyone who was very strong in terms of showing both their human and social capital were extremely wanted when it came to forming teams. They’re doing all the right things to show they’re both trustworthy and competent,” Maupin said.
However, the researchers found students who only showed social capital through supportive voice were more needed than those only showing their competence through the use of challenging voice.
These findings could have major implication for the workplace. If people are looking to join important teams, they should use supportive voice to show others they can be trusted, especially when they’re new to an organization. In times of the pandemic (流行病), the findings are even more useful as many organizations have a fully long-distance or mixed work model. “You may only see your coworkers during online meetings,” Maupin said. “With fewer in-person interactions, you really need to make your human and social capital noticeable through the use of your voice, especially if you’re looking for future team opportunities.”
30.In the study the MBA students were asked to ________.
A.explain why they picked certain team members
B.grade how each team performed in the projects
C.question the skills and knowledge they have
D.share their experience of fitting into a team
31.The third and fourth paragraphs are mainly about ________.
A.what the research found out B.who the research focused on
C.why the research was important D.how the research was carried out
32.During the pandemic, to make your human and social capital noticeable, you need to ________.
A.work out new ways for a mixed work model
B.design interesting online meetings for your team
C.speak up in both challenging and supportive ways
D.have as many in-person interactions with coworkers as possible
33.What do you know about preference for teammates from the passage
A.People using challenging voice are more likely to be accepted.
B.The ability to come up with new ideas plays a more decisive role.
C.A friendly attitude outweighs the ability to deal with difficult tasks.
D.The desire to get others’ trust is more valued than to build social ties.

Lost and Found
When I was in Grade 9, my father took a new position in Ohio, so my family moved there and rented a house. My mother told me that I could have a gift for my new life. What I wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I finally asked for a nightstand with lockable drawers. And that was what I got.
After we took a secondhand nightstand home, I decided to paint it to make it look better. When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck to the back of the lowest drawer. And guess what I found It turned out to be a Ziploc bag with some papers in it!
When I opened the bag, I found a bunch of ten-and-twenty-dollar bills wrapped(包裹) in the papers! I just found a treasure! Was I the luckiest boy ever With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Maybe I even had enough money to get a car for my parents. How exciting!
“Wait, is this some kind of joke ” I said aloud then. Maybe this was fake (假的) money, but it looked pretty real. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out that some old lady was leaving her savings to her family.
All this was too strange. My mind was going crazy.
My mother was knocking on my bedroom door. I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.
“How is your painting job coming along Is everything all right ” she asked.
“I’m okay,” I lied. “I’ll let you know when it’s ready.”
When my mother left, I lay on my bed, looking at the ceiling and thinking about this past week. First, I didn’t make the basketball team. Then, I failed the math test. Finally, I found this money on my birthday—the only good news during a long time. It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, right What about keeping some and returning the rest However, I didn’t feel good about it.
“Somebody helps me with this!” I begged. But I didn’t need someone else to give me the answer. I already knew right from wrong. That’s why I failed the math test even though I could have cheated. I decided not to fail this test. It was a test of honor. My honor.

Real-time Dialogue with a Dreaming Person
While dreams are a common experience, scientists still haven’t fully explained them. Relying on a person’s retelling of dreams is also filled with distortions(扭曲) and forgotten details. And most curious of all, dreams take us to what feels like a different reality. They also happen while we’re fast asleep. So, you might not expect that a person in the middle of a vivid dream would be able to sense questions and provide answers to them. But a new study reported in the journal Current Biology on February 18, 2021 shows that, in fact, they can.
The researchers from four labs in four different countries studied 36 people who aimed to have a lucid dream, in which a person realizes he/she is dreaming. The study is unusual because it includes four experiments using different ways to achieve a similar goal. “We found that individuals in REM sleep(快速眼动睡眠状态) can interact with an experimenter and engage in real-time communication.” said senior researcher Ken Paller of Northwestern University. “We also showed dreamers can understand questions, take part in working-memory operations, and produce answers, although most people might think this would not be possible. “We put the results from four different labs together because we considered that they can prove the reality of this two-way communication activity.” Karen Konkoly, another specialist in this field, added.
According to the study, it was possible for people while dreaming to follow instructions, do simple math, answer yes-or-no questions, or tell the difference between different sensory stimuli(感官刺激). They could respond by using eye movements or contracting(收缩) facial muscles. The researchers refer to it as “interactive dreaming”.
“Our experiment is like finding a way to talk with an astronaut in another world, but in this case the world is completely based on the memories stored in the brain,” the researchers write. But we realized that finding a way to communicate could open the door in future scientific examinations. Moreover, it is helpful to learn more about dreams and memory storage. We will carry out follow-up experiments, aiming to learn more about connections between sleep and memory processing, and about how dreams may show this memory processing,” the researchers say.
27.The word “lucid” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A.sweet B.clear C.wild D.magic
28.According to the study, during the dream people can ________.
A.understand questions and answer simple ones
B.recall and explain the forgotten details easily
C.repeat a common experience in the daily life
D.talk with an astronaut in another world
29.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The ways and results on sleep and dream experiments.
B.The connections between dreams and memory processing.
C.The relationship between the brain and interactive dreaming.
D.The benefits and future aims of studying dreams and memory.
In today’s climate, industries often talk about the new popular word of this age, big data. Big data refers to data in general, mostly unorganized and unstructured. The use of big data has huge potential (潜力) for various industries, healthcare included. Facebook and Amazon, for example, use big data for their digital structures to match customers with their interests. Some experts in discussing big data have described it as the four Vs: Volume referring to a large amount of data; Velocity referring to the timely generation of data; Variety referring to the many forms of data; Veracity referring to the quality of the data.
Some researchers discussed the potential of big data in medicine recently. For example, big data can be used to improve decision-making when combined (结合) with other new technology like artificial intelligence (AI). It is possible that big data can combine clinical (临床的) characteristics, lifestyle and environmental factors with AI in future clinical testing. However, this remains just a daydream at the present moment. So far, all big data techniques are mainly descriptive. In the future, with advanced computational power, using big data in medicine is promising.
However, big data also has its limitations, and there are several lessons we must learn before using it effectively. First, big data is never well-managed and comes with a large degree of mess. Thus, selecting the correct technology with human power to manage big data is of importance. Second, analytic (分析的) companies can misinterpret (误解) big data by using incorrect research questions to test their guesses or using the wrong tool to analyze the related data, resulting in delivering false messages.
Surgisphere, an American analytic company, is a typical example of what can go wrong through the analysis of big data. Surgisphere stated that it collected data from over 1000 hospitals worldwide. Although this is possible and new technology can complete this task with minimal human resources, it is difficult that this data can be well-managed. In addition, healthcare data is challenging to work with, as the combining of electronic medical records and data privacy are major problems. Another example is the Cambridge analytic case (案例), where data got from Facebook was used without permission.
When properly used, big data can be a game-changer for various industries, including the healthcare industry. This requires well-managed data, related research questions, appropriate analytic tools, and advanced computational powers. In the wrong hands, big data can be a big threat that can bring industries into disorder as a whole.
30.According to the passage, Facebook and Amazon use big data to ________.
A.set up their healthcare industry B.correct their digital structures
C.meet customers’ preferences D.increase the amount of data
31.What can we learn from the passage
A.Big data in me icine can be used well with improved computational power.
B.Medical records and data privacy are well-managed in health care.
C. The data was misleading in the Cambridge analytic case.
D.Amazon used the related data without false messages.
32.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To question whether the data companies can help to improve decision-making.
B.To show industries can benefit from big data technology with its proper use.
C.To prove data can be fully depended on with advanced analytic tools.
D.To explain why people can make full use of big data technology·
33.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.Big Data: A Game-changer
B.Big Data: A New Popular Word
C.Big Data: A Coin with Two Sides
D.Big Data: A New Age for Medicine
