Once you begin to eat potato chips, you may keep eating until the bag is empty. Have you ever experienced this Why can’t you stop eating these salty chips Scientists said it is due to a kind of neuron (神经元).
Scientists at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston have found that some neurons can make us want to eat salt.
The neurons take note of whether our bodies are lacking sodium (钠), a main part of salt. Then, they send signals (信号) to our brain to encourage us to eat more salt, according to the Daily Mail.
How do these neurons work
Scientists did experiments on mice. They found that when mice lack sodium, their body gives off a kind of hormone (荷尔蒙) called aldosterone (醛固酮). This hormone then makes these neurons become active.
More research showed that adding salt to meals makes people enjoy their food more, Time magazine reported. This may cause people to continue eating even if they are full.
Scientists from Deakin University in Australia asked healthy people to eat the same food for lunch for four weeks. The amount of salt in the food was changed each week. At the same time, the scientists measured how much these people ate. They also asked the people how they felt about the meals; for example, if they felt happy or were still hungry after eating.
The results showed that salt made people eat 11 percent more food and calories. When eating low-salt meals, they could control(控制) over how much they ate. “But when we add salt to that food, all of a sudden those controls are gone,” researcher Russell Keast said to Time.

You may think you cannot live through summer without air conditioners (空调). But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only help for people to drive the heat away.
Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes, such as round and square. They were also made from all kinds of materials (材料). Palm leaf (棕榈叶) fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans showed the owner’s high status (地位). Sandalwood (檀香) fans could send out a sweet smell.
Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into artworks, in which tuanshan (round fans) and zheshan (folded fans) were the most common.
In the shape of a full moon, tuanshan was usually made of silk. They had beautiful embroidery (刺绣) of birds and flowers on them. Women, especially those in the imperial palace (皇宫), liked to use them. Poets in ancient China often compared a woman’s abandoned fate (被抛弃的命运) to tuanshan. Nalan Xingde wrote during the Qing Dynasty, “If only life were as beautiful as when we first met, why should the autumn wind bother to pity deserted painted fans (人生若只如初见,何事秋风悲画扇?)”
However, men, especially the literati (文人), used zheshan, or folded fans. The literati liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their talents in literature, painting and calligraphy (书法). Almost anything can be painted on zheshan, but the most popular ones usually featured landscapes (以风景画为特色).
Today, Chinese people still use these fans, only not many write or paint on them any more. So the next time you use a fan, you may think of the stories behind it.

(一)回答问题(每小题2分,计10分,答案不超过6词)。
You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard(胡须) and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman sits on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote(纸币) was based on him Sadly, Huang died at the age of 94 on Feb 1, 2023.
Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit(精神) of Lijiang River---being positive and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape(风景) commented Guangming Daily.
In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic(标志性的) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. For example on the back of the 5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times many emperors would go there and pray(祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon(三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a "banknote tour" when he was 21. "I want to finish a ceremonial(有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country" Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.
