Helen Keller Dies at 88
海伦·凯勒去世，享年88岁
Helen Keller, the well-known writer and educator, died yesterday at the age of 88.
海伦·凯勒，著名的作家和教育家，于昨日去世，享年88岁。
Helen Keller was a model for people around the world.
海伦·凯勒是世界人民的榜样。
Helen was born in 1880 in the United States.
海伦1880年生于美国。
When she was nineteen months old, Helen fell ill.
19个月大时，海伦生病了。
She had a high fever that made her blind and deaf.
她发高烧导致双目失明、双耳失聪。
Before her illness, Helen was a bright and happy girl.
生病前，海伦曾是个阳光快乐的女孩。
After she lost her ability to see and hear, she became difficult and wild.
当她丧失视听能力后，她变得难哄和狂野。
She often shouted and cried.
她经常大吵大闹。
In 1887, a young teacher named Anne Sullivan, began to help Helen.
1887年，一位名叫安妮·沙利文的老师开始帮助海伦。
She spelled words on Helen's hand with her fingers.
她用自己的手指在海伦的手上拼写单词。
At first, the words didn't mean anything to Helen.

Then, one day, while Helen was playing in some water, Anne spelled W-A-T-E-R on Helen's hand.

That day, she learned many more words:mother, father, sister and teacher.

She also learned to write and even speak.

When Helen studied at university, Anne sat beside her.

She listened to the professors' words and spelled them on Helen's hand.
她一边听教授的课，一边将听到的内容拼写到海伦的手上。
After Helen finished university, she visited many countries.

She spoke about her life. She was very famous for her courage and hard work.

She did her best to help others in the community who were deaf or blind.

1.Helen Keller, the well-known writer and educator, died yesterday at the age of 88.
意为：海伦·凯勒，著名的作家和教育家，于昨日去世，享年88岁。
讲解：well-known"著名的"“众所周知的”，相当于famous。
at the age of…“在……岁时”，如：
She began to dance at the age of four.
她四岁时开始跳舞。
2.She had a high fever that made her blind and deaf.
意为：她发高烧导致双目失明、双耳失聪。
讲解：have a high fever“发高烧”。
that made her blind and deaf这是一个定语从句，用来修饰说明先行词fever。
这里的关系代词that在定语从句里作主语，还可换为which。
3.In 1887, a young teacher named Anne Sullivan, began to help Helen.
意为：1887年，一位名叫安妮·沙利文的老师开始帮助海伦。
讲解: named"名叫"“叫做”，相当于called，如：
A girl named Wang Mei wants to meet you.
一个名叫王梅的女孩想见你。
named Anne Sullivan可以改为定语从句：who/that was named Anne Sullivan。
4.That day, she learned many more words: mother, father, sister and teacher.
意为：那天，她还学会了很多单词：妈妈，爸爸，姐姐和老师。
讲解：many more"又有许多"“还有许多”，如：
I have downloaded many more pictures of animals.
我又下载了许多动物图片。
类似的还有：two more"又有两个"“再来两个”，相当于another two。
three more"又有三个"“再来三个”，相当于another three。
如：
I want to buy two more books.
我想再买两本书。
5.Anne was filled with pride.
意为：安妮非常自豪。
讲解：be filled with…“充满……”“装满……”，常与be full of替换，如：
The basket is filled with apples.
篮子里装满了苹果。
6.As Helen grew older, she made a lot of progress and learned to read.
意为：随着海伦的渐渐长大，她取得了很大的进步，并且学会了阅读。
解析：make a lot of progress"取得很大进步"，如：
You've made a lot of progress since you joined the English club.
自从你加入英语俱乐部以来，你取得了很大进步。

讲解：that she could feel with her fingers这是一个定语从句，用来修饰说明先行词letters，这里的关系代词that也可换为which。

注意：这里的famous也可换为known或well-known。

意为：她尽最大努力去帮助社会上的其他耳聋者和盲人。
讲解：do one's best“尽最大努力”“竭尽全力”，相当于try one's best，后面接动词不定式（即：to do形式），如：
Li Ming does his best to learn English.
李明尽最大努力学习英语。
who were deaf or
blind这是一个定语从句，用来修饰说明先行词others“别人”。有些同学可能会误将community“社会”“社区”当作先行词。
10.She will be greatly missed.
意为：她将被（世人）深深怀念。
讲解：be missed是被动语态，意为：“被想念”。
在英语中，“be+过去分词”用来表示被动意义，如：
The stars can't be seen in the daytime.
星星白天看不到。
再如：
The child was taught by Mr. Zhu.
这个孩子被朱老师教过。
greatly"非常"“很“”大大地”，用来修饰动词，如：
The face of village has greatly changed.
这个村庄的面貌已大大改观。
再如：
Mrs. Wang's words have greatly encouraged me.
王太太的话极大地鼓励了我。
