I joined a band (乐队)as a drummer in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing the drum and meeting new friends. At first it was easy, but a month later, it got difficult. I was the only one who couldn’t keep pace (节奏)with the other players.
Our teacher, Angie, singled me out to keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. I felt ashamed (羞愧的)as my teammates watched me fail so many times. Finally I got so tired of practicing that I didn’t care about doing it right.
“Are you giving up on me. Steve ” Angie asked.
“Yes, I am,” I shouted. Angie sent me inside the music room where I cried out. Then she came in and said. “Don’t be sad. I believe you can make it!” She told me never to give up. She left me alone and I realized Angie was right—by giving up, I was also giving up on the team and myself.
With her comfort, I decided to go on practicing. However, I still couldn’t play well. Knowing my difficulties, my teammates gave me a hand. They spent about three more hours practicing with me every week. Thanks to their support and help, I began to keep pace with them. Later, we performed wonderfully in an important show.
In the whole process, I was taught that although we each had our own job to do in a show, it would take all of us working together to make the show great. I felt accepted and made great progress. I love everyone in the band. I can’t imagine what my school life would be like without them.

Poverty(贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. The per capital income(人均收入) reached 12,670 yuan, 40 times more than in the 1990s.
Over the last eight years, 98.99 million rural people have been lifted out of poverty. The 832 counties (县) and 128,000 villages which these people live in are no longer in poverty. China has been responsible for reducing 70 percent of poverty world-wide since the late 1970s.

All through grade school, I got extra help with schoolwork. If I got a D, I was very happy. If I got a C-minus (C-), I had achieved greatness. A’s and B’s were a kingdom I could never enter.
Once my teacher, Miss Mills, had given me a list of ten spelling words. My mother and I went over the list until I knew those words. I felt great. I thought, “Wow! This time, I’m going to pass.” The next day, I went into the classroom and began to write down the words. The first word was carpet. I wrote that one down: c-a-r-p-e-t. I was feeling pretty confident. Then came neighbor-I wrote down the letter n. Then rhythm-I knew there was an r. Suburban-I wrote s-u-b. My confidence failed me. I had gone from 100 percent to maybe a D-minus. Where did the words go

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in moon soil (土壤) collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts.
The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in moon soil. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow plants. Robert Ferl of the University of Florida was surprised with the results. “Plants actually grow in moon soil,” he said.
Ferl and other researchers planted thale cress, a small flowering plant, in moon soil. The good news was that all of the seeds (种子) grew. The bad news was that after the first week, they grew slowly. Most of the plants ended up small and not fully developed.
Scientists found that the longer the soil was on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to grow. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 was the least helpful for growth. It was a couple billion years longer. One solution might be to use younger soil on the moon, like lava (火山岩浆), or put in some special nutrient (营养物) mixtures.
Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo groups that landed on the moon. Early last year, NASA finally gave out 12 grams of soil for the planting experiment (实验).
The Florida scientists hope to reuse their moon soil later this year, planting more thale cress before possibly moving on to other plants.
A scientist said, “Growing plants is a big step forward. The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”
64.What did Robert Ferl think of the results of the planting experiment
A.Surprising. B.Disappointing. C.Awful. D.Regretful.
65.What do the Florida scientists plan to do this year

Imagine mountains held in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees the mountains turn green with growing rice. During auturmn, these same mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered with white frost. These are the colours of the Longji Rice Terraces.
These terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people in Guangxi. Work on the terraces took them hundreds of years from Yuan Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. Reaching as far as the eye can see, these terraces cover tall mountains, often from the bottom to the very top.
So why did these people go to so much trouble to turn the mountains into terraces Firstly, there are few large, flat(平坦的)areas of land here. Building the terraces meant that they could increase more fields to grow rice. Secondly, the flat terraces catch the rainwater and stop the soil from being washed away.
But perhaps what is most meaningful is the way people have worked in harmony(和谐)with nature to make these terraces. The terraces are cleverly shaped, with hundreds of waterways that connect with each other. During the rainy season, it is along these waterways that rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces. The sun heats the water and turns it into vapour. This forms clouds and then rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.
Although modern technology could help produce more crops, these terraces still mean a lot to the local people. For them, traditions hold much value. This knowledge is passed down through families, which means that people continue to use ancient methods of farming to keep the terraces. Today, the Longji Rice Terraces receive high praise(赞扬), and thousands of visitors come to enjoy this great wonder created by people and nature working together.
68.How does the writer introduce the Longji Rice Terraces in Paragraph 1
A.By telling stories. B.By describing sights.
C.By showing cultures. D.By making interviews.
69.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Why the farmers use the waterways to grow rice.
B.Why the farmers turn the mountains into terraces.
C.How people work in harmony with nature together.
D.How the local people protect crops in the rainy season.
70.Why do the local people still keep their ancient farming ways
A.To value their traditions. B.To produce more crops.
C.To share their experience. D.To satisfy more visitors.
71.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text

Many Chinese primary and middle-school students can’t do housework today and do not take such work seriously. As a result, some are unable to cook or wash their own clothes when they enter college.
The Ministry of Education has recently released the new curriculum standard(新课程标准) for housework education for students from Grade 1 to Grade 9, making it an independent course that students must take at least once a week. Students in junior middle schools will learn to repair simple electrical machines. This new standard has been widely welcomed by the public.
Wang: We all know the importance of housework education. However, at home, some students are unable to do the simplest housework, as their parents insist they should devote themselves to study. Some of them gradually grow to be unwilling to do any kind of housework. Housework education is supposed to raise students’ interest in labor, help them experience different kinds of housework and, most importantly, correct their attitudes toward labor. The housework course will become an important step to develop and improve personalities of students.
Li: In order for students to develop in an all-round way, it’s absolutely necessary to add the housework course to school curriculums, which aims to encourage students in primary and secondary schools to progressively learn and love housework. For this reason, schools should add professional(专业的) teachers to give the classes, instead of adding this new stress on parents and other teachers who are already busy with their daily work.
Zhang: Some people think it’s unnecessary to waste time on learning housework. If you want to have a meal, you can order food online, and for electrical machine repairs, you can ask for specialized help.

In the whole process, I was taught that although we each had our own job to do in a show, it would take all of us working together to make the show great. I felt accepted and made great progress. I love everyone in the band. I can’t imagine what my school life would be like without them.

Biking keeps you fit. It is a clean and green way to get to work it you live close enough. Also, it’s cheaper than driving a car.
Biking has so many advantages, but why aren’t there more bikers on city roads According to a survey, the number one reason is the worry about road safety.
Sharing the road with cars can be dangerous. Omar Bakhshi experienced this when a car knocked him down, which had bad effects on his taste and smell for life. Bakhshi realized that what happened to him wasn’t unusual.
Because bikers often experience dangers with cars, Bakhshi set out to make roads safer to share. He started a company, Tether, to improve safety conditions for city bikers.
Tether’s invention is a smart sensor (传感器) that goes on a bike’s handlebars (把手). As the biker rides through the city, the invention makes a “safety zone (地带)” of lights onto the road. These lights will make cars pay attention to the rules of sharing the road. If cars get too close to the biker’s personal spaces, the lights will start flashing.
What makes Bakhshi’s invention different is its smart features (特点). Tether’s tool collects data (数据) from these biking accidents. The data is organized into a central database and can be used to choose which streets are safer for bikers.
Not only can bikers choose a better way to avoid heavy traffic by using the data, but Bakhshi plans to share the data with the government.
Walking, biking, driving and public transportation all have different advantages and disadvantages. When all road users can share the same level of safety knowledge, everyone can get where they need to go quickly and safely.
56.Why aren’t there more bikers on city roads according to the passage
A.Because people can’t afford bikes. B.Because people can’t ride bikes.
C.Because people like to drive cars more. D.Because people worry about road safety.
57.What happened to Bakhshi before he started Tether
A.He lost his new bike by accident. B.He failed to invent a bike.
C.He had an accident when riding a bike. D.He hurt a man when driving a car.
58.How does Tether’s invention improve safety conditions
A.By making a “safety zone” of lights. B.By making the bike stronger.
C.By making the bike much cheaper. D.By making people drive cars less.
59.What can be the best title for the passage

65.What do the Florida scientists plan to do this year
A.To find some younger soil on the moon. B.To make some special nutrient mixtures.
C.To plant some other plants in new moon soil. D.To use the moon soil again in the experiment.
66.What may be the real purpose of the planting experiment
A.To collect more soil from the moon. B.To send more scientists to the moon.
C.To grow plants on the moon surface. D.To plant more thale cress on the moon.
67.What can we infer (推断) from the passage
A.Most of the plants grew well after two weeks. B.The soil collected by the Apollo 11 is the oldest.
C.It is easy for astronauts to bring back moon soil. D.Scientists found no ways to improve the experiment.

A.To introduce the history of the terraces. B.To advise people to build more terraces.
C.To list the ways of improving technology. D.To praise the cleverness of the local people.

The new standard requires students in Grade 1-2 to learn to sweep the floor, Grade 3-4 to learn to plant cabbages, and Grade 5-6 to master the skills of cooking two to three dishes.
It is important to make the housework class interesting, so that the students will really gain some practical skills.
However, people with the basic skills for daily life can go much more confidently and smoothly through everyday life.
It is the first step in encouraging young students to develop a healthy concept(观念) of labor and to be able to take care of themselves in daily life.

Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong Province has a long history of making kites.
Weifang kite-making dates back to 2,000 years ago. At first, they were often used by the army for measuring distance and communication purposes. During the Ming Dynasty(1368—1644), kites started to be popular among ordinary people as entertainment. Having a special connection with kites, Yang learned the art from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing the skills for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992. On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common patterns like butterflies and birds, but also some paintings telling Chinese legends and history.
Though the idea was cool, the process was not easy. “It’s really hard work,” Yang added, “but when I explain the stories on the kites to foreign customers, I feel a sense of great achievement.”
In her space time, she also travels to different countries including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand to tell people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways of making kites. “I’m an inheritor of the culture.
