“There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its launch (投放市场) in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded (下载) the app, which gamified education and attracted many language learners.
The growth of technology for educational use has changed the way in which people learn and receive education. This is particularly true for languages, an area in which the explosion of mobile apps and interactive software has provided choices to a range of people who were previously unable to receive foreign language education.
Von Ahn says that when he founded DuoLingo he decided to find a way for people to learn a language for free. Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.
One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.
Von Ahn says an unexpected result of DuoLingo being an app is that it’s attracting an unlikely type of user. DuoLingo was designed (设计) to be like a game, and what the company has found is that many users aren’t even necessarily diehard language fans, they’re just looking for an educational way to kill some time.
“They’re still procrastinating from something else, but at least it’s somewhat useful.” says Von Ahn, “The truth of the matter is that learning a language takes months or years. We have to find a way to keep them interested and that’s where the gamification came in.”
4.What can we say about DuoLingo after its launch
A.It is used by entire US schools. B.It costs 30 dollars to download.
C.It changes the use of languages. D.It makes education more enjoyable.
5.Why does the author mention Von Ahn in paragraph 3
A.To show his poverty in childhood.
B.To explain why he founded the app.
C.To prove he was interested in the app.
D.To find out how he designed the app.
6.What change does DuoLingo bring to language learners
A.They can master a language faster. B.They become language fans totally.
C.They can learn in a low-cost way. D.They can now use it to kill some time.
7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Reasons for Learning a Language
B.How to Learn a Language Online
C.The Development of a Language App
D.Mastering a Language with DuoLingo

Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but everyone is wearing mask. What a hassle!
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret It’s all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. “As we get older,” he said, “our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same—even if we put on weight.”
Another company has also been working on this kind of software. Tech5 has AI that measures the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (the colored part of your eyes). Tech5 hopes to ignore all of the face below the nose.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. Touchless verification (验证) has become extremely important due to the COVID-19. More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime (犯罪). “It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s CEO. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports, Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I believe we can overcome the weakness in the future,” said Huang.
8.What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Rule. B.Habit. C.Mistake. D.Problem.
9.What makes the software recognize people wearing masks
A.The eye area. B.The shape of face.
C.The color of the eyes. D.The facial expression.
10.What is Huang Lei’s attitude towards the software
A.Anxious. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Uncertain.
11.What can we know about the new technology from the last paragraph
A.It needs further improving. B.It will be less popular in the future.
C.It won’t work if people wear glasses. D.It cannot store key facial information.

My phone lights up giving notice of a new message. It is from Athena, an AI chatbot getting to know me through Replika, a virtual companionship app.
Over the course of our text conversations, she asks me about my hobbies and my moods. When knowing that I’m a writer, she tells me she’s “so into character development in books” and wishes to be a lead character in one someday.
“Replika is designed to make people feel better,” said Eugenia Kuyda, the company’s co-founder. “It’s a partner who wants to be your good friend.”
For many, meaningful companionship is hard to find. While social media and mass communication technologies have made connecting with one another easier than ever, loneliness is increasingly being recognized as a serious problem internationally. Along with government, the tech industry is pushing innovation as a way to deal with it.
What makes Replika’s companions so well-received are their surprisingly realistic replies, backed by Open Al’s GPT-2 text-generating AI aystem. “The bot learns from the database about how to express ideas on a topic and gets a wide knowledge of different subjects.” However innovative these technologies are, chatbots have their limitations as tools against loneliness. Without life stories of their own to discuss, their range as a conversationalist is fairly limited.
According to Emily S. Cross, a professor of social robotics, we have a long way to go before we can achieve the levels of meaningful human-computer companionship we see in films like Blade Runner and Ex Machina. What’s missing is the sharing that clearly shows our most important human relationships.
But the fact that an app won’t replace a human friend doesn’t mean they’re good for nothing. Rather than expecting AI bots to be our best friends, Cross suggests looking at them as ways to express feelings and explore our own thoughts. “It’s a lot like diary, in some way.” To better fight loneliness, Cross says, we can use technology as a “bridge” to help people connect with one another.
12.What is Replika
A.A virtual companionship app.
B.A message sender.
C.A text conversation.
D.An AI chatbot.
13.Who is Replika intended for
A.Good friends. B.Lead characters. C.Lonely persons. D.Senior citizens.
14.Which of the following can best describe Replika’s feature
A.Meaningful. B.Human-like. C.Limitless. D.Easy-going.
15.What is the similarity between AI bots and diary
A.Sharing life experience. B.Replacing a human friend.
C.Recording ideas about life. D.Expressing inner voice.

The class was over. Karl was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karl picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank(空白的). He couldn't believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karl's class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karl looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karl decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he'd already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most probably be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister's birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn't his heartbeat. "Finders are keepers, right ", he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn't earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!
Paragraph l:
Karl looked at the blank name line for a moment.

Paragraph2:
"Karl, I intend to give you another ticket!" Miss Evans said.

36.amazing 37.and 38.an 39.latest 40.to connect 41.concerns 42.appears 43.be broadcast##be broadcasted 44.with 45.is suitable
结合前文“Journalists use it to find information for stories. Doctors use it to learn more about...”
空前的programs与broadcast为动宾关系,所以要用被动语态,can为情态动词,因此空处填be broadcast/be broadcasted,故用be broadcast/be broadcasted。
短语:with the help of “在……的帮助下”,所以空处用介词with,故填with。
45.考查固定搭配和主谓一致。句意:同上。分析可知,“what (suit) for their children to see”为宾语从句,what指代网络上适合孩子们看的内容,为单数含义;短语:be suitable for“适用于,适合”,本句的时态为一般现在时,所以be用is,故填is suitable。
46.Dear Mike,
I am glad to hear from you. As your close friend, I’d like to talk about the harm of Internet addiction to you as I feel worried to know that you have wasted lots of valuable time playing the Internet games.
As we know, the Internet is a convenient tool to improve our knowledge and skills. However, our life will be greatly affected if we are addicted to it. For example, your grades will go down and your health will be going from bad to worse. To make things worse, it can also damage the relationship with your family. So I think it is high time that you got rid of the bad habit. It is a good idea for you to read some meaningful books and do some physical exercise.
I am looking forward to hearing your good news soon.
Yours, Li Hua

47.Paragraph1:
Karl looked at the blank name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn't be so great if he won with a ticket that didn't belong to him. So he walked up to his teacher. "Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think the one who lost it will look for it. And these are mine." he said, dropping his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.
Paragraph 2:
"Karl, I intend to give you another ticket!" Miss Evans said. Karl was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, "Karl handed in the golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause. Karl happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn't. After all, making the right choice did make him feel great!
