It is almost 200 years since great bustards – the world’s heaviest flying bird – were hunted to extinction in the UK. Now a programme to reintroduce them says the wild population will soon be large enough to sustain itself. Birdworld in Farnham, Surrey, has incubated eggs from Madrid Zoo since 2013 before releasing the birds.
Duncan Bolton, of Birdworld, said: ‘2015 promises to be even better for the UK’s wild great bustard population, with four nests spotted on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. At least 30 more young great bustards will be released this year. We are delighted to be a part of this historic undertaking and have just completed this year's hatching. The resulting chicks are now at a secret location on Salisbury Plain being reared for release.’
Great bustards, which resemble ostriches, were once common but became extinct in the UK nearly 200 years ago. The last one was killed in 1832. Last year 33 bustards were released in the UK, and a spring census showed a survival rate of more than 50 per cent through the first winter. This is more than double the 22 per cent which may be expected in a natural wild population.
The Great Bustard Group was set up in 1998 by former policeman David Waters with the aim of reintroducing the bird, which featured on the Wiltshire county crest and flag. Under the reintroduction scheme, great bustards have been released on a Ministry of Defence-owned site on Salisbury Plain since 2004. Because the area is a military zone, the public are kept out of many places where the birds can breed in peace. Spain has two thirds of the world's great bustard population, with over 30,000 birds, and that number is increasing.
