An idol is someone who we respect or love. However, unlike many of my classmates, my idolis not a film star, a famous writer or a sportsman. He is neither a world leader nor an important person from history. My idol is my dad.
Most people believe that a man should go out and work. However, when I was only a five-year-old boy, I was seriously ill and needed attention all the time. My mother and father both worked and my grandparents lived far away. This was a big problem. My dad knew how much my mum loved her job, so he stopped working to stay at home and look after me. Many men in this situation would want their wives to stay with the child, but my dad always thinks about others before himself. This made me start to respect him.
My dad later took a job and worked at night. He chose the job so that he would only be out of the house when I was sleeping. Since then, my dad has helped and supported me in everything I do. I remember when I was learning to ride a bike. My dad ran behind me and held the back of the bicycle so that I would not fall. I felt so safe because I knew he was near. I did not notice when he stopped holding me. Soon, I was able to ride by myself.
My family is not rich, and we do not own a big house or an expensive car. My dad has showed me that something is more important than money. My dad gives me his time. Although he now works hard every day and is often very busy, he always makes time to stay with me. He helps me with my homework, and plays games with me at weekends. We make and fly our own kites, go for walks in the countryside, and even cook together. He taught me that I can achieve anything if I really work hard on it.
My dad is my idol because he showed me the most important things in life.

Panda Life in the US
Pandas are not just a national treasure in China, but beloved around the world.
On March 16, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC, started a six-month celebration. This year is the 50th anniversary of the arrival of two giant pandas.
The first pandas from China in the US, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing arrived at the zoo on April 16, 1972. In that year, China and the US established diplomatic (建立外交的) relations. China gifted the US these two pandas to show our goodwill. Over the past 50 years, eight pandas have lived at the zoo.
From meals to daily fun, the zoo teams have found ways to take care of the giant pandas. A food team grows the animals’ favorite food—bamboo—in the zoo. Working with local landowners, it also harvests (收割) bamboo from 20 stands across Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. Sometimes, the team receives donations from the public. Besides bamboo, the pandas receive apples, sweet potatoes and honey water. Sweet potatoes are a favorite.
The team also sets up fun activities and toys, which help the pandas stay active and smart. For example, there are puzzle feeders. Pandas have to take food out of the feeders by spinning (旋转) or twisting (弯曲) them. Pandas can paint with the zookeepers, too.
Behind the protection work is a close partnership with panda experts (专家) in China. Usually, the zookeepers and Chinese panda experts visit each other several times a year to share knowledge about the animals. During the pandemic, they have communicated through emails and video calls. It has been an unbelievable experience for Brandie Smith, director of the z00, to work with Chinese experts.
“After 50 years, giant pandas remain an iconic species (标志性的物种) for our zoo,” said
Smith. She hopes the program will continue at least 50 more years.

Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. Spacewalks let astronauts work outside their spacecraft (飞行器) while still in space. Astronauts can do science experiments on a spacewalk. Spacewalks also let astronauts test new equipment (设备). They can repair spacecraft in space instead of bringing them back to the Earth to x.
When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits with pure oxygen (纯氧) inside to keep themselves safe. Once in their suits, astronauts breathe oxygen for a few hours. Breathing only oxygen can help clear out all the nitrogen (氮气) in an astronaut’s body. If they didn’t clear out the nitrogen, the astronauts might get gas bubbles (气泡) in their body and the bubbles will do them harm. These gas bubbles can cause pain in astronauts’ shoulders and knees. This pain is called getting “the bends” because it has in uences on the places where the body bends.
Astronauts are now ready to get out of their spacecraft. They leave the spacecraft through a
special door called an airlock. The use of the airlock is to stop air getting out. The airlock has two doors. When astronauts get ready to go on a spacewalk, they go through the rst door and lock it tight behind them. They can then open the second door without any air getting out of the spacecraft. After a spacewalk, astronauts go back inside through the airlock.
How do astronauts stay safe during spacewalks They use safety ropes to keep themselves from oating away (飘离) into space. When on a spacewalk, one end of the safety rope is hooked (钩住) to the space walker while the other end is connected to the spacecraft. Astronauts also use ropes to keep tools from oating away. They tie their tools to their spacesuits.
Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. If an astronaut were to oat away, SAFER would help him or her y back to the spacecraft. Astronauts control SAFER with a small joystick (控制杆), like on a video game.
