When is Tree Planting Day in China
Review the basic steps for planting a tree.
Think about it!
It’s March 12. Li Ming and his classmates are on a hillside.
They are planting trees as a school project. A worker is there helping them.
Li Ming: Excuse me, sir. We are digging a hole. Is it big
enough
Worker: Maybe you should make the hole a little bigger.
It must be large enough to hold the roots of the
seedling.

Li Ming: I see. Thank you.
Worker: Now, put the seedling inside, cover the roots
and fill the hole with dirt. Then pack the dirt
around the new tree with your feet.
Wang Mei: OK. By the way, there is another group of
people down the hill. Are they also coming to
plant trees
Worker: Yes. Many people are worried because the
environment is changing, and they want to do
something to help.

Li Ming: These changes are serious. When there is a
dust storm in spring，it gets windy and dirty
everywhere.
Wang Mei: Ms. Liu told us the wind blows the dirt and the
sand here from the north. Nothing can stop the
wind because there are not many trees left.
Worker: Exactly. A lot of rich lands in the northern area
have turned into desert.

1. Maybe you should make the hole a little bigger.
也许你应该让洞更大一点。
maybe 作副词，意思是“也许；大概”，在句中作状语，一般放在句首，可以位于句中，还可以单独作答语。
【拓展】may be是由“情态动词may+动词原形be”构成的，在句中作谓语，意思是“可能是”。
It may be in your bag. 它可能在你包里。

a little bigger 意为“大一点”。a little 在此作程度副词,可用于修饰形容词、副词的比较级,表示比较的程度。
She is a little taller than her sister.
她比她的姐姐高一点。
【拓展】除了a little 之外, much, a lot, even, far等都可以修饰比较级。
She did much better this time.
她这次做得好多了。

2. It must be large enough to hold the roots of the seeding.
它必须足够大以容纳种子的根。
must是情态动词，意为“必须；肯定”。也可以表示推测。用在肯定句中表示较有把握的推测。对现在的状态或现在正发生的事情的推测时，must后面通常接系动词be 的原形或行为动词的进行式。如：
You have worked hard all day. You must be tired.
你辛苦干一整天，一定累了。
（2018年山东青岛中考） This book ______ be Lucy’s. Look! Her name is on it.

【点拨】考查情态动词表推测的用法。句意：这本书一定是露西的。看，她的名字在上面。can表示推测时，通常只用于否定句或疑问句；may和might表示推测的可能性较小。由“Her name is on it”可知，把握非常大，这本书“一定”是她的。故选C。

fill 作动词，常用动词词组 fill… with…， 意为“用……把……装满”。被动形式： be filled with意为“装/填满……”，相当于be full of，full是形容词。如：
He filled his backpack with books.
他把书装进书包。

5. By the way, there is another group of people down
the hill. 顺便说一下，在山下还有一组人。
by the way意为“顺便问一下;顺便说一下”，表示附带说,常用于交谈中引出题外的话语。通常放在句首，用逗号将其与后面的句子隔开。

【拓展】由way 构成的其他短语:
(1) in the way 妨碍
There were some big stones in the way.
有一些大石头挡住了路。
(2) in this way 用这种方法
I worked out this problem in this way.

(3) on the way 即将到达
The spring is on the way. 春天即将到来。
(4) in one way 在某种程度上。
In one way, I agree with her.
在某种程度上，我同意她的观点。

turn into 意为“变成”, 相当于grow into, 其中into 是 介词, 后接名词或代词作宾语。turn sb/sth into sth意为“把……变成……”。
The witch turned the prince into a frog.
女巫把王子变成了青蛙。
【拓展】含有turn的短语:
turn in 交还; turn out 出席;
turn over 翻身; turn up 露面。
6. A lot of rich lands in the northern area have turned into desert. 在北方地区许多肥沃的土地变成了沙漠。

7. I suppose tree planting is very important work.
我想，植树造林是非常重要的工作 。
suppose是及物动词，常用来表示说话人的看法、猜测或假设。其基本用法如下：
(1) “suppose＋名词/代词＋介词短语” 表示 “猜测某人/某物在……”。如：
He supposed his friend in the library.
他猜想他的朋友在图书馆里。

(2) be supposed to中的to是动词不定式符号，后接动词原形，主语为人时，表示“应该；被期望”，它可以用来表示劝告、建议、义务、责任等。主语为物时，它表示“本应；本该”，用于表示某事本应该发生而没有发生。它还可以用来表示“被认为是；被相信是”。如：
I am supposed to start work at 7:30 every morning.
我理应每天早晨7:30开始工作。

种植物既有趣又重要。
It’s +adj. + (for sb.) to do sth. （对某人来说）做……是……的。it作形式主语，真正的主语是后面的动词不定式。其中sb.是动词不定式to do的逻辑主语。

对孩子们而言，玩火是危险的。
