When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher encouraged me to enter a writing contest, sponsored by an organization in our hometown. I demurred.I loved history.I did not love writing.I was a Cuban refugee, and English had been my nemesis from the moment I first shoved a chunky No. 2 pencil up and down the dashed lines of D’Nealian paper. My teacher knew my writing was cursory. And I knew that I lacked discipline. (What neither of us knew was that I was also dyslexic.)Writing was so excruciating that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic as an oral report — a one-act play, where I played all the parts. No one wheeze-laughed harder than he.So, why the sudden hectoring to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. And if you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.”
Few things motivate a writer like a bit of shameless flattery.I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. The story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant notion, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he ripped through the night, his coat sloughing sweat, his eyes wide with adrenaline Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s fabled horse, I kept going.I worked hard. I checked my spelling. With a dictionary. I enlisted my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the finished essay, my teacher read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again. And no name. Entries are anonymous.”I wrote it again. And again and again. If I didn’t win, I didn’t care. I had poured a wobbly writer’s blood and sweat into something that made my teacher proud.

Lighting the candle: a wild ride
原文
Weeks passed. I forgot the competition. Thoughts of winning — a pipe dream to begin with — gave way to the enticements of a Georgia spring. Then came the news. There were two winners from each grade. A lanky, sweet-natured redhead in my class won second place.I won first place. That may have been the first time in my chatty life I was struck dumb, in any language. Our teacher hooted with delight, my classmates stared at me in open disbelief, and Second-Place Red gamely shook my hand. The following week, the winners met with the head of the sponsoring organization. We stood in the office, clutching our plaques and tittering to one another, when a small, birdlike woman entered. She spoke to the adults, then made her way down the line of winners, congratulating each of us and shaking hands. Red and I were last. We introduced ourselves. She looked from one to the other. She didn’t speak. She didn’t extend her hand. After a few awkward seconds, she cleared her throat and explained that there had been an embarrassing mistake. Then she gently reached down and took our plaques — hands crossing at the wrists, she re-assigned them — and apologized for the error.I was now the second-place winner. No one challenged her.It wasn’t until later that I remembered. Our entries were anonymous. How could she have known which child had won what
I can’t tie a bow on the end of this strange tale and make it pretty. It’s not that kind of story. But there is this: I got a taste for writing that spring. I learned to respect a writer’s labor and perseverance. And — despite the challenges of both dyslexia and a second language — I never stopped writing.

I can feel the warmth of the bright sun touch my shoulders. The soft sand tickles my fee as I walk up and down the familiar shore. Sunbathers have put up their colorful umbrellas, and they create a rainbow across warm sand. In the distance, the beach goes on for miles down the rocky coastline. Exotic fish are in the pretty blue water, which shines in the sunshine. Small seagulls fly in the fluffy white clouds that are in the sky.

I can feel the warmth of the bright sun touch my shoulders. The soft sand tickles my feet as I stroll / saunter up and down the familiar shore. Sunbathers have popped up their colorful umbrellas, and they create a rainbow across warm sand. In the distance, the beach stretches out along the rocky coastline. Exotic fish glide through the pretty blue water, which glistens in the sunshine. Small seagulls soar in the fluffy white clouds that float in the sky.
赏析:从改进后的版本来看,全文描写的场景是为了突出“我”悠闲地在沙滩漫步,所以stroll/saunter(溜达,散步)这个词会比 walk 更具体,更能具体地反映“我”当时的情绪状态--悠闲。在描写水中鱼的动作时,be in the blue water 当中的 be 动词

Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector's turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the Room Five champion.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions ” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay. " said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil. ” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer.
Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory.
As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn't want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words “Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers". Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He'd cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn't change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning's questions too ” Hector thought. “He'd take away my Room Five victory for sure. ” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do.
Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler's room.
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee.

Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room. “Hector! Come and help me look for ...” “This ” Hector stopped Mr. Adler mid-sentence, holding out the open envelope. Mr. Adler’s brows were smoothed but then knitted again. Before he formed questions, Hector started unbosoming his regrets. If he had waited another moment, they would have torn him into pieces. “Can I still be in the Bee ” asked Hector timidly. “Absolutely, my honest boy,” Mr. Adler patted his shoulder. “I don’t believe in punishing people for making the right decisions and correcting their mistakes.” Immense relief washed over Hector.
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee. Having been up late studying, Hector looked exhausted but extremely excited. So did all the other competitors. All the eyes fixed on the stage, Hector felt blood rushing onto his cheeks and his heart beating fast. Unfortunately, the questions Mr. Adler rewrote were so tough that he was knocked out in round three. But Hector realized to his surprise that he didn’t feel bad about losing at all. Whether others knew he was smart was of no significance. He’d set out to learn everything about the world and ended up learning more about himself.

Cathy, my mom, whose pet phrase(口头禅)was “Never give up”, was our family’s beacon of positivity. It was not a title she earned without concerted(一致的)effort, however. When she was only thirty years old, her husband was killed in a car accident and she was left to raise me alone.
My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. Leading by example, Mom taught me just how much one could accomplish with a positive attitude. She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren--Max and Charley.
One hot summer afternoon, my mom and her two grandsons, having spent two hours building sand castles and collecting sea shells on the beach, sank into their beach chairs to have a rest. How they longed for delicious ice cream to cool themselves, especially the two kids!
Suddenly, my mom heard the familiar loud clang(叮当声)of the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned quickly and saw him briefly, spotting his distinctive green shirt and catching the gleam of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared over the dunes(沙丘).
Happily, the ice-cream man’s visit was a daily occurrence at the beach, although the lag time between the sound of his bell and the departure of his truck was not long. One must be quick enough to catch him to buy the ice cream.
Max and Charley were in great disappointment when they didn’t catch him in time that day because they really wanted to have a taste of those cool ice-creams. That was until my mom’s eyes sparkled and she said to the kids, “Never give up!” She explained to the kids that the truck might be gone, but they should be able to catch him up at its next stop. And the kids agreed immediately.
Paragraph 1:So Max and Charley, accompanied by my mom, began their mission.
Paragraph 2:Max and Charley, encouraged by my mom, walked another three blocks. .
对材料的误解
【参考答案】
Para 1:So Max and Charley, accompanied by my mom, began their mission. Driven by the prospect of having delicious ice-cream, the two kids scampered ahead so fast that my mom could hardly follow. Not knowing which direction the truck had taken, they had to inquire passers-by on the way. Having walked three blocks, my kids’ tiny legs were as heavy as lead and their faith in the mission began to waver. “We should give up.” They wondered out loud, “We have been walking pretty far and still can’t see the truck yet.” “Never give up! The truck should be around here.” my mom said determinedly. So, they walked on, chanting Mom’s pet phrase.
Para 2:Max and Charley, encouraged by my mom, walked another three blocks. Suddenly, my mom seemed to hear the familiar clang of the bell. “Listen, the ice-man’s bell!” shouted my mom excitedly. They immediately rushed to where the sound came from. Sure enough, the moment they turned around the corner, the ice-cream man’s truck came into view. They quickly caught up and bought the ice-creams. Licking the ice-cream cones, the two kids finally tasted the joy of success. At that moment, my mom had done for my kids what she had done for me countless times. Simple though it was, that phrase has become our battle cry for the challenges we face.
