(2022·吉林·梅河口市第五中学高一期末)Lonely You’re hardly alone. That’s the finding of a new study. And that appears throughout industrial nations across the globe. The study linked rising loneliness to a greater use of smartphones and the internet over the same years.
Jean Twenge, a psychologist, took part in the study. Her team has found that since 2012, US teens have been spending less time together face-to-face.
“Smartphones can help keep us connected with friends,” says Twenge. “But they can also make people feel excluded (隔离).” Girls, especially, may feel this way. One reason may be that they like to post more photos and selfies (自拍) than boys. Studies have shown that if those images don’t get a lot of “likes”, it can affect a teen’s mental health.
And there’s “phubbing” a mixture of “phone” and “snubbing (冷落)”. It’s that moment in which a friend or family member takes out a phone and keeps looking at it, paying no
attention to everybody else, including you. Phubbing is one way technology can affect you, even when you’re not the one using it.
The new study pulled its data from a survey. Some 1 million 15- and 16-year-old students from 37 countries took this survey in 2000, 2003, 2012, 2015 and 2018. Its questions mostly dealt with education. But they also included six statements about loneliness, such as “I feel awkward and out of place in my school”. Students could strongly disagree, disagree, agree or strongly agree with each statement.
If technology causes loneliness, should we stop using it “No, not at all,” argues Twenge. “Everybody of all ages is trying to figure out how we can best use these technologies and stay mentally healthy.” Her advice is to “use your smartphone for what it’s good for. Then put it away.” That includes putting it away overnight—ideally in another room.
4.How do girls differ from boys in smartphone use in the study
A.They need it to stay in style.
B.They depend on it to keep in touch.
C.They use it as a learning tool.
D.They like to post more pictures with it.
5.Why does the author discuss “phubbing” in paragraph 4
A.To show the harm of the smartphone.
B.To give an example of communication.
C.To introduce an embarrassing situation.
D.To present a scene with the smartphone.
6.What is Twenge’s attitude to using the smartphone
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive.
C.Uninterested D.Worried
7.What can be the best title for the text
A.The Smartphone—the Focus of a Study
B.The Smartphone—a Communication Tool
C.The Smartphone—a Friend of Teenagers
D.The Smartphone—a Source of Loneliness

(2022·黑龙江·哈九中高一阶段练习)True happiness is such a rare commodity (有价值之物) that the whole of the world is continuously seeking it and failing to find it. Why is happiness such an elusive (难捉摸的) thing Is it that it cannot simply be achieved Or is it that it is not where all of us have been looking for it
What is it that we consider happiness This is how I see it: Happiness is what you feel when what you want to happen happens. And then we can conclude that unhappiness is what we feel when what we want to happen does not happen.
The main keyword in definition is “want”. The whole trouble starts when we want something. Every moment of our lives we keep on wanting something or the other. Only a small percentage of all our wishes is fulfilled in spite of all our endeavors (努力). The frustration of failing to fulfill most of our wishes sets in. We start feeling weighed down. Desire is a seed which grows fruits of unhappiness. Actually, the trouble is that we demand too much. The only solution to this problem is to break out of this cycle of desires and struggles.
Actually, happiness and unhappiness are two sides of the same coin. The desire for happiness is like asking only for the light and not for darkness. But there is not much difference between light and darkness. It is matter of degree only.
If we think deeper, we will realize that it is this pain of failure, pain of frustrated desires which is of greater significance to us. It is actually like good health. One can only define health as an absence of diseases. In order to have good health we strive to avoid diseases. You cannot purchase or achieve good health directly. You have to take steps which keep your body free of diseases. Then only the organs of body keep functioning properly and you experience good health. Similarly, when one destroys the root cause of unhappiness, the problems are over. And the root cause of all our unhappiness is DESIRE.
8.According to the author, happiness means that ________.
A.you have much money B.you can experience everything
C.you’re living healthily D.your wishes come true
9.Which of the following can best replace the underlined words “weighed down” in Paragraph 3
A.Delighted. B.Interested.
C.Worried. D.Serious.
10.By discussing how people keep healthy, the author tries to ________.
A.persuade us to get rid of the pain of failure and frustrated desires
B.remind people to find the root cause of their unhappiness
C.stress physical health and mental health are both important
D.offer ways to find the root cause of unhappiness
11.What can be concluded from the passage
A.In fact, the more endeavors we make, the more happiness we will achieve.
B.To have good health, people should identify the organ which can’t work properly.
C.While seeking happiness, people had better not desire too much.
D.To get happiness, people need to struggle a long way.

(2021·广东·揭阳华侨高中高一阶段练习)It is reported that half of the food the world produces is never eaten but thrown away instead. Wasteful people in rich nations, however, are not the only food buyers. Poor countries, too, are throwing out perfect good food. According to Elliot Wooley, a professor who studies at Loughborough University, what should be noticed is that developed and developing countries have different causes for their waste.
Because of few food production methods, in developing countries, food is usually wasted while it is still in the field or during the storage and transportation process, but once food is sold, people usually eat everything they buy. In the United States and other developed countries, people throw away as much as half the food they buy.
Such a change among countries calls for special solutions. Professor Wooley’s answer to food waste is a smart-phone app that he created. It would inform people of how many goods they have bought, how long they will last and so on. At the international meeting held last month in Vietnam, the professor said the result from an experiment shows that people who used the app cut down the amount of food they wasted by 34 percent.
But Jeremy, a student from Germany thinks Professor Wooley’s app is not enough to prevent food waste. “It might help those who already want to change the way they use the food they buy, but it could also encourage them to waste more because they no longer have to pay attention to how much food they buy,” Jeremy said.
“The problem is that as food is getting cheaper, people are buying more food than they need, which will surely result in a huge waste,” Jeremy added, “so one way to prevent food waste is to persuade people to stop buying too much food in their first place.”
12.Which of the following is TRUE about food waste
A.People in rich countries are more likely to waste food.
B.People in poor countries don’t value food at all.
C.Some countries waste food before it is sold.
D.All countries waste food before it is sold.
13.According to Professor Wooley, how could we prevent waste
A.By using his app, food waste could be reduced.
B.By encouraging people to save food.
C.By informing people of the amount of food they buy.
D.By educating people to save food since childhood.
14.The student Jeremy doesn’t think much of the app because ________.
A.he has developed another app to prevent food waste
B.the app could only apply to those who plan to save
C.it will surely decrease more food waste
D.people still haven’t realized how serious waste is
15.According to Jeremy, what might be the best way to prevent food waste
A.Buying food without control if it is cheap.
B.Persuading people not to throw away food.
C.Making laws to forbid people to waste food.
D.Persuading people not to buy more than they need.

As a mountain, 1, 642-foot Squaw Peak isn’t very challenging. But its beautiful views of western Massachusetts have attracted hikers into becoming self—satisfied with no attention to its dangerous cliff(悬崖), resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.
Henry Grant, shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak and was well aware of its danger. So, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up with him one day in August 2019. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the view; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was looking over the cliff with her husband on the edge of it.
When Grant’s mother caught up, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly, he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled out. Grant turned around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. She’d fallen off the side of the mountain.
Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was affected by trees. Grant told his mother, “I hate to say this, but they may find a body.” Uncertain they could help, Grant and his mother went on their way. But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. After telling his mother that he would be safe, he made his way down the mountain alone, hoping he wasn’t too late.
After 15 minutes of searching, Grant saw a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and was in a kneeling position on a small rock. The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Fortunately, she was alive.

C.To introduce an embarrassing situation.
D.To present a scene with the smartphone.
6.What is Twenge’s attitude to using the smartphone
