The analysis of teaching content
This lesson is taken from Unit 4, Book 3 of the new curriculum standard of PEP edition. The topic of this unit is to learn about the development of space exploration and discuss humans efforts to explore the universe, so that students can learn about that mankind’s achievements in the field of space exploration, and then firm their culture confidence, set up ambition, as well as motivate them to contribute their strength to China’s space industry.
Teaching aims
1. Knowledge aim Let students learn more about space exploration and the spirits of exploration. 2. Ability aims ① Develop students’ reading ability and let them learn structure and logic of the text and master the ability of summarizing main ideas. ② Enable students to talk about the significance of space exploration. 3. Emotional aims ① Inspire students to think about what is the importance of space exploration. ② Motivate students’ determination, persistence, curiosity, effort and ambition and build up students’ cultural self-confidence.
The analysis of text and learners
This text is the fourth unit of the third compulsory course. As most of the students lack the basic knowledge of the passage, students may have some obstacles in understanding. Therefore, I will use some multimedia approaches to lead in the article, through some beautiful pictures and videos to arouse students’ interest in learning, so as to reduce the difficulty of reading.

1. Important points ① Let students learn more knowledge of the development of space exploration. ② Get students to learn how to summarize the main idea. 2. Difficult points ① Develop students’ reading ability. ② Enable students to discuss about why we explore space and the spirits of space exploration.
Teaching procedures
Step1 Lead-in Before reading, I will show students a video and some pictures about space. After enjoying the video, students can feel more interested in the passage and try to guess the information given by the editor. Step 2 Fill each gap Students need to read the text because several sentences have been removed from it. Students should choose the correct sentence to fill each gap and teacher need to remind students to pay attention to the linking words or similar words before filling each gap. Step 3 Summarise the main idea Students skim the text and try to find topic sentence in each paragraph. Before reading, give them a tip about how to find the author’s main idea, and remind them to pay attention to the words or ideas that repeat themselves. Meanwhile, Students can have a general impression of the structure, content and the author’s intention of the text. Step 4 Read for details Paragraph 2 and 4 are the achievements in the two superpowers (The USSR and The USA) and China. Students are going to carry out activities as follows: 1. Students pay attention to read Paragraph 2 silently and finish the timeline. 2. Students think about such a question: Why was space exploration mainly carried out by two superpowers Step 5 Further thinking What’s the significance of space exploration a. Space exploration carries human’s curiosity. b. Space exploration motivates human’s determination, persistence, curiosity, effort and ambition. c. Space exploration enlightens international cooperation. d. Space exploration witnesses China’s progress. e. Space exploration links humans and future. Students can also think about more than above points.
Step6 Assignment
Nowadays, there is an activity titled “I say something to CNSA.” As a teenager, what would you say And why do you say so (80 words)
