Frightened. That was how I felt that Monday morning when my marine（海洋的）science students came into class and began encouraging one of their classmates to "tell him what happened at the beach yesterday".
Although each of my students had received a Professional Association of Diving Instructors（PADI）Open Water Diver Certification as part of our marine science program, I was frozen in fear and wondering what had happened at the beach. Once certified, my students began to use their new diving skills to carry out underwater research projects on the coral reefs（珊瑚礁）near our island. Being islanders surrounded by water, my students are taught that the ocean is not a dangerous place, but can be very unforgiving to those who make mistakes. In this case, my first thoughts were for their safety and well-being. I did a quick head count. They were all in class with all their parts in place. I became less afraid and more curious about what had happened. But I was wholly unprepared for the story they told.
A three-year-old boy playing in the water near the shore was about to sink. His family members and beachgoers rushed to help, carrying the boy to the beach, but no one was sure what to do next. One of my students was at the beach that day and rushed over to help. She had taken a first-aid course that I'd taught as an after-school program. She began CPR（心肺复苏）and asked others to call 911.By the time doctors arrived, the child was able to breathe in his mother's arms.
As teachers, we know children learn through our energy and effort. They become interested. Some find their passions and go after their dreams. In this way we know we have the power to change lives. I'd add that once in a while we have the power to save a life.

Women generally have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease（心血管疾病）as they age. Now, a new study reveals another risk factor in increasing heart trouble as people age-eating alone. Researchers of The North American Menopause Society（NAMS）say eating in isolation contributes to both physical and mental risk factors that can harm the heart.
Although many studies have examined the link between a healthy diet and a healthy heart, study authors say few have actually looked at the importance of eating with another person. Food delivery services are making it extremely easy for people to avoid the public while still getting their meals.
Unfortunately, previous studies show that people generally eat faster when they're alone, which leads to a higher body mass index, a larger waistline, and higher blood pressure and blood lipid levels. All of these problems increase a person's risk of both metabolic syndrome and heart disease.
"This study shows that older women who eat alone are more likely to have symptomatic heart disease. They are also more likely to have lower incomes and poorer nutritional intake. This result is not surprising given that lower socioeconomic status and social isolation contribute to a lower quality of life, greater rates of depression, and poorer health. Given that women live longer than men, finding ways for older women who are socially isolated to engage in and create meaningful social ties may improve not only their nutrition but also their overall health while simultaneously reducing the costs of health care, "says NAMS medical director Dr.Stephanie Faubion in a media release.

Even male chimps need their moms. Chimpanzees live in a male-dominated society, where most of their valuable mates are other males. However, as young male chimpanzees become adults, they, at least half of them, continue to maintain tight bonds with their mothers, a new study reveals. And approximately one-third of them have the closest friendship with their mothers while few female chimps contact their mothers.
Previous research has shown chimpanzee mothers provide their sons support that goes far beyond nursing. Young male chimps that are close with their moms grow bigger and have a greater chance of survival. To see whether this bond extends into later life, researchers followed 29 adolescent（9 to 15 years old）and young adult（16 to 20 years old）male chimpanzees at a research site in Kibale National Park in Uganda. For 3 years, they observed the chimps from a distance, recording any social interaction they witnessed. These included grooming （照料）comforting behaviors such as holding hands or patting shoulders, looking back for or waiting for other individuals, offering support during conflicts, and sitting near each other.
The team found that young adult males spent less time with their mothers than adolescents did-26% versus 76%.And unlike adolescents, they no longer cried for their mothers or sought comfort after fighting.
However, when these young adult males happened to be in the company of their mothers, they acted just like the adolescents, the researchers report this month in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. They groomed their moms just as often and kept track of them. Many mothers remained the males' "best friends", or the social partner they associated with most frequently in the wilderness, says study co-leader Rachna Reddy, a biological anthropologist（人类学家）at Harvard University.
