Today was the finals of the Dance Competition. Our team of five had me as the lead dancer; then there was Grace, my best friend and Eric, a dance lover who is a master in perfecting our choreography(编舞);and two talented twins, with such flexibility and grace on the stage that one cannot take their eyes off them.
We had found a perfect coach for our team. Jackie, a cousin of Eric's, worked in a dance school. She was a bit hesitant at first, but quickly agreed when she saw the progress we had made so far.
In the dressing rooms, there were so many other competitors preparing for their performance, rushing here and there.
Grace and I had changed into our costumes and were putting on our shoes when Eric murmured, “ Who are they ”
We turned to follow his stare, among many people, four beautiful girls along with a lean boy had just walked in.
“They're first-rate!” cried Grace, “more like fashion models. ”
They sure were. A look at the list of competitors told me they were from “Tweekverse”, the most famous dance school in the whole country.
Jackie came up behind us, “Guys, it's time, come on. Let's go!”
“Oooh,do you get the vibe(氛围)?”Grace was excited. I could understand her,I didn't feel any less thrilled.
When we entered the concert hall, my jaw literally just dropped. It was massive. There were so many people. The four judges, who were seated at a large panel, did look very serious.
The competition started. The first performances were brilliant. One team had the neon(霓虹)theme,in which they wore shine-in-the-dark costumes and the whole place was dark. I was attracted to their impressive display. Obviously, everybody was. The judges' cards displayed the scores. They were marking out of ten.
The next performances were even better, but for us, they became more competitive. The group from Tweekverse was the best. Their costumes, charming faces and fascinating performance impressed everyone.

One bright and breezy morning in Ireland, a leprechaung (小精灵) named Colin marched through the woods. He was whistling like a bird and thinking about how pretty he looked in his new waistcoat (背心), which was as fresh and green as a beautiful spring leaf. With that thought, he tried imitating (模仿) the sound of the wind whistling in the trees. Colin grinned. Copying different sounds was among his greatest strengths.
The peace was broken by the yelling and howling nearby. “Waah! Waah!” What was that Colin dived into a bush, shaking and trembling with fear. Was it a fox or an eagle, ready to snatch him up for breakfast
As he trembled, the sound came again. “Waah! Waah!” Yet nothing leaped out of the bushes. Colin cast a glance around, then sighed in relief.
“Waah! Waah!” He crept toward an open area where a human baby girl sat, filling the air with her cries. “Quiet! Creatures fill the woods,” Colin whispered. He tried singing, dancing, making funny faces, and imitating various animal noises to distract her attention.
“Waah! Waah!” Small hands grabbed for him, and he jumped back. But then he realized the baby’s hands were reaching not for him but for his bright green waistcoat. Unwillingly, he shrugged out of his waistcoat and held it up to the baby, who stopped crying immediately. Soon his waistcoat was gathering drool (口水) as the baby held it to her face. Then, Colin heard the sound of the waistcoat being torn.
Realizing he had lost his beloved waistcoat. Colin sought to find the baby’s parents.
“Pegeen! Where are you ” There were the baby’s parents in the woods, desperate in their shouts. “I was milking the cow,” the father choked, his face worn with worry. Behind him was the baby’s mother, red-eyed from weeping. She cried. “I was sewing and she was gone.”
Colin’s heart was touched. He had to do something. The baby’s parents had been searching in the wrong place. But because a leprechaun mustn’t risk being seen, he couldn’t simply lead them back to the baby.

Anna poured coffee from the tin pot as the evening sunlight flickered on the prairie (大草原). She hated being stuck helping Rufus. the cook. What Anna loved best was riding. At twelve years old, she was an able cowhand — Papa just never gave her the chance to prove it
After Anna washed the tin cups and unrolled her bed. she listened to the cowboys talk about the next day's challenges. "And a storm's coming. too. "Luke added. "The horses will be nervous before we even start.
Anna closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but couldn't. "The men will need my help!" she thought. But when Papa slipped into his bedroll, he whispered, "Anna, you stay near Rufus tomorrow. It'll be dangerous. ""But, Papa, I'm a good hand!""No, Anna. I'd be watching you instead of the herd. It's settled. Now, off to sleep, darling.
Anna crossed her arms and stared at the sky. The stars disappeared under a blanket of clouds. The wind whistled and bent the prairie grass. Restless, the cattle wailed and stamped the ground. The camp slept — everyone but Anna. Tears rolled down her face. Why couldn't Papa understand Ever since Mama's death, he'd tried to protect Anna from everything. He was killing the fun right out of her life.
Anna felt a few drops of rain. She got up, grabbed her hat, and tiptoed toward her horse, Copper. She wanted to be alone. A loud crack of thunder shook Anna from her thoughts. Copper moved forward nervously. As lightning lit the landscape, Anna saw the herd (兽群) and sensed the same fear. "Whoa!" Anna gasped, trying to keep Copper from dancing. "If this noise keeps up, those cattle will panic!" As she spoke, a bigger blaze of lightning crashed. From the direction of the herd, there came a sudden low rumbling(隆隆声).
"Stampede(畜群逃窜)!" Anna cried. "And it's coming this way!"

The woods surrounding the Audubon Society were November dark with its sky overcast with gloomy clouds. The branches shut out the day light and the wind howled horribly around the woods.
Ruby sighed and packed up his bag on the shoulders. “Least it has stopped raining. It won’t take long,” Ruby comforted his brother Henry. “Dad said he’d pick us at the gift shop.”
Henry ignored him with a frown and stomped(踩踏)up the path, his shoes slipping on the wet rocks. He was annoyed that their dad had practically forced them to go on a hike in the bird habitat outside town. “It will be good for you both,” Dad had encouraged, handing them his binoculars. “You’ll get some fresh air and maybe see some cool birds.”
As the boys climbed, the trees grew closer together. The only sounds were the dripping of rain from the trees and the rustle(沙沙声)of small birds among the forest. At the top of the slope, they stopped to catch their breath. A single black feather floated down onto the path. Rubylooked up. On a nearby branch, a black crow(乌鸦)stared down at them.
“Shoo!” shouted Ruby, waving his arms, frightened by the bird’s black eyes. It opened its sharp beak(鸟喙)and let out a loud and horrible squawk. “It’s watching us as if we were worms or something.” Ruby pushed his brother along the path. “Just a stupid crow.” But as he walked, Ruby couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched.
“Ruby ” called Henry, panic shaking his voice. To their horror, on the path, a line of more crows blocked their way and the branches on both sides were filled with numerous birds, their evil eyes glancing at them. They fluttered their wings frantically, ready to attack the boys.

I keep a two-dollar bill in my wallet that was given to me by my mother when I was six years old. I still remember the day when she pulled me into the living room and said, "You are brilliant in my mind, but if you fail once don't give up. Don't fear failure. It is a way of getting us to try harder. You will succeed, I promise. "She looked at me and continued, "I want you to carry this two-dollar bill for extra good luck. "
"Thanks mom, "I replied. "I will keep it close to me always. "
I am not superstitious(迷信的), but from that day on the bill goes with me wherever I go. I firmly believe that luck would follow me everywhere.
Every morning I would get dressed and my two-dollar bill went into my pocket. My mother passed away when I was 17 years old and I remember taking out my two-dollar bill. I held it in my hand for the longest time and knew that she would be watching over me the rest of my life.
Each time I felt I had a crisis on my hands, I would reach for my two-dollar bill and set it on the table. I would stare at it for several hours and could always come up with a solution.
When I applied for my first job, I was thirty years old and very shy. The thought of being interviewed for a job was scary but I had to work. On my first interview, as I sat in the waiting room, I noticed there were five women ahead of me. All of the women were younger and very well dressed. One of them looked perfect in her blue striped suit with matching purse and shoes. I knew I was up against women better qualified by looking at the length of their resumes(简历).

It was our turn next I felt goose bumps and my hands were shaking. My teammates also seemed very nervous. Jackie immediately worked out our expressions."Hey, it's going to be alright guys. You have got to enjoy yourself, move with the beat and dance your heart out," she encouraged us. As we went up the stage, I felt a new energy. We were going to show the judges how excellently we could not only dance, but also make the audience connect and feel with us. That determination and courage made me and our team ace the competition.
I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the 9.5 on the screen. It was the highest mark yet, and ours was the last performance. The crowd was bowled over by us. As we were bowing in response to the standing ovation we received, I glimpsed sideways and saw a beaming Jackie cheering with the audience. Our rivals came to meet us too. I could detect a note of disappointment in their "Congrats". However, that was not what caused me to grin, it was just my elation at how we outshone them with our performance.

Colin thought for a moment and a smile flashed across his face."Waah! Waah!" he cried."Pegeen!" the couple exclaimed and followed, their hearts pounding with hope. Mimicking the baby's cries, Colin moved, just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of them, taking care not to be seen. Soon they got to the clearing."Pegeen!" At the sound of her parents' voices, the baby dropped the waistcoat and cried. Immediately, the mother rushed over and scooped up the baby in a joyful dance. Meanwhile, the father plucked the waistcoat from the ground—crumpled and ragged like an autumn leaf. With a sigh, Colin slipped away, feeling a warmth in his heart.
Two days later, Colin was wandering through the woods when he spotted something familiar hanging from a branch. It was his beloved waistcoat—now washed and mended, looking as good as new. Colin snatched up the waistcoat, happy to have it back in his possession. As he held it close, he discovered a note attached to it, which read, "Thank you! You've made a big difference to our life!"Colin grinned as he slipped the waistcoat on and then strutted forward, crowing like a rooster. From that day forward, Colin continued to stroll through the woods, whistling and imitating different sounds, but with a newfound sense of purpose and compassion in his heart.

One possible version;
The sleeping men lay between Anna and the cattle stampede. She swung Copper around and raced back, yelling warnings of the danger. The lightning flashing bright as daylight, she saw the cowboys frantically trying to get out of the way. At full speed, Anna guided Copper toward the stampeding cattle. Copper responded to her urgency and raced forward. Anna pulled alongside the young cattle in the lead, shaking her hat and whooping at them, desperate to change their direction. The leaders finally turned, and slowly, slowly, the herd followed. The camp was safe.
Afterward, Anna poured coffee to warm the cowboys. She dared not meet Papa's eyes. Unexpectedly, Papa cleared his throat and said, "I don't know what you were doing out there. but—""But she's quite a hand. " said Rufus, taking the coffeepot. "Yep, "Luke chimed in, "She saved our lives. " Papa looked down at Anna. "I was gonna say — If you'll forgive an old man for loving his girl too much, I'd be proud to have you ride with us tomorrow. What do you say " In answer, Anna beamed broadly, and the sparks in her eyes lit up the whole prairie.

The boys froze, frightened by the hundreds of greedy eyes. “Run!” screamed Ruby, grabbing his brother by the arm and charging through the line of crows. Abruptly, the crows flew up in a mass, but soon descended again like a dark cloud covering the gloomy sky. Slipping and scrambling, the brothers ran down the hill, fighting off the rush of the sharp claws and beaks. Ruby knew that the gift shop was just around the corner, but the creepy birds were just everywhere, making it difficult for them to see anything ahead. Suddenly, Henry tripped and felldown. In an instant, the birds were on him, pecking, scratching and tearing his clothes. He let out a high-pitched scream. On hearing that, Ruby ran back to his brother, and beat off the crows with all his might, yelling for help at the top of his lungs.
At that urgent moment, a familiar car pulled into the path. It was their dad, who had set off earlier than expected out of concern. “Get in the car, boys!” Dad yelled, beeping the horn fiercely and gesturing for them to hasten their approach. The boys wasted no time and bounded towards the car, with the crows in hot pursuit, screeching furiously. Ruby and Henry quickly scrambled into the back seat, breathing heavily from the adrenaline rush. As their dad drove them away from the bird habitat, they looked back to see the crows retreating back into the trees. “Are you okay ” Dad asked, concern etched on his face. “Yeah, we’re fine,” replied Ruby, still shaking from the experience. “But can we never come back here again ” added Henry, his voice still shaky. Dad nodded in agreement, and they drove back home, thankfully, safe and sound.

Mrs. Martin, the office manager, called me into her office. “What makes you feel you are qualified for this job ”she asked. “I really need this job and there is nothing I can not do.”I responded. She asked me a series of questions and the interview was over. As I exited her office, I turned around and said,“Ms Martin, I know that I am not qualified like your other applicants, but please give me a chance. I learn quickly and can be a very productive member of your team.” I thanked her and went home exhausted. Oh well, I thought, tomorrow would be another day.
Late that afternoon, while I was cooking, the telephone rang. It was from Ms Martin. “Gina,”she said,“you were not the most qualified applicant, but you have so much confidence in yourself that we decided to give you a chance to prove yourself.” I screamed out loud, was jumping all over the room in disbelief. I could hear Ms Martin laughing in the background and suddenly I realized that Ms Martin was still on the line. “Thank you, Ms Martin, you will not regret this decision.”I said and hung up the phone.
