Reading is a good habit, but the problem is that there's too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.
Preview (预览) — if it's long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting the main idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.
Here's how to preview:
Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs. Previewing doesn't give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want or need to read.
Skim (略读) — if it's short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get the main idea of light reading like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment (娱乐) of your daily paper.
Here's how to skim:
Get your eyes to move fast. Read across each line.
Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we'll get a similar idea of what it's all about.
(1) Why should we learn some reading skills
(2) How many skills are recommended in this passage
(3) What can we do to get the main idea of a long and difficult article
(4) What skill can we use to get the main idea of a popular fashion magazine

The same rule applies (遵循) when learning a language. The only way to learn English without making mistakes is not to talk. But if you don't talk, you don't practice and don't learn.
I'm not condoning ignoring (忽视) grammar and vocabulary. Those are all very important. And if you notice the mistakes inside of those, you should try to correct them. But don't let fear of making a mistake keep you from talking. You have to break out of the fear. And you've to start making mistakes right now. Because not until you make mistakes can you correct them. And only when you correct them can you get better.
Remember you've to crawl (爬) before you can walk, you've to walk before you can run. So I want everyone to open up their mouths and start talking as much as possible, so that you can find out what your mistakes are, and then help yourself to talk better.

Climbing a mountain is hard work. But one step (脚步) after another finally brings a person to the top. Along the way, he can stop and look around. And the higher he climbs, the more wonderful his view is. If he keeps climbing, he will have a new world before him. He will have a new way to see everything.
Now learning a foreign language is something like climbing a mountain. This new language can give you a new view of life. And it is more than a look at the surface of things. It can open the way into people's minds and hearts and into a culture that is very different from your own culture. This will make you richer, richer in things that money can't buy. Even though you never set foot (踏上) on a ship or a plane, you can be an armchair traveler through books.
The mountain climber stops now and then to enjoy the scenery around him. Reading is just like this. If you are interested in it, you will find fun in books.
(1) Is climbing a mountain easy
(2) What will he have if he keeps climbing
(3) Can learning languages open the way into people's minds and hearts
(4) How will learning languages make you
(5) Where will you find fun if you are interested in reading

STUDY HELP
For many tests and exams, you are tested on your abilities to communicate successfully. In order to speak English fluently, you need to think in English. If you don't, your speech will be slow and it won't sound natural. Here are some things you can do to practice thinking in English.
● Look at objects around your home and school, and think of what they are called in English. Try to make a direct connection between the object and the English word.
● When you are out in a public place, practice describing the things and people you see in your mind. For example, think, "There is a man walking down the street. He's wearing a suit. I think he is going to work." Try to think in English first, not in your first language.
● When you have to say something in English, think first and ask yourself, "What words and phrases do I know in English that I can use in this situation " Try not to think in your first language and translate your ideas into English. If you do, you will get frustrated very quickly.
Try these tips and you'll soon find that you are thinking in English.

In classes, your teachers will talk about topics that you are studying. The information they provide will be important in your tests. You must take good written notes from what your teachers say. Here are the three stages of notetaking and what you should do during each stage.
Get Ready to Take Notes (Before Class)
● Review your notes from the previous (前) class before you come to class. This will help you remember what you have learned before and get you ready to understand new information.

Take Notes (During Class)
● Focus on what your teacher is saying. Listen for "signal statements" such as "The most important point..." and "Remember
that...". Be sure to write down what your teacher repeats or writes on the blackboard.
● Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviated words such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.
● Place a next to information you write in your notes but about whose meaning you are not sure.
Rewrite Your Notes (After Class)
● Rewrite your notes to make them more complete by changing abbreviated words into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences.
● Make your notes more accurate by using your textbook and reference sources. If necessary, ask your teacher or other students for help.
● Check with other students to be sure you did not leave out important information.

What good language learners do
There's no such thing as being born "good at languages". However, some people can learn languages well. It only has something to do with their attitude (态度) and the way they learn languages.
Good language learners aren't afraid to take risks.
A friend of mine can speak English, French and some other languages. I asked her what was the most important thing in learning a language. She answered at once, "Courage."
Good language learners face the fear of making mistakes, but they are not afraid.
Good language learners are actively involved (投入) in learning process (过程).
Good language learners take responsibility (负责) for their own learning. They create chances to use the language. They know practice is very important. They do not expect to learn the language only in the classroom. They look for creative ways to try out what they have learned.
Good language learners are good detectives.
Good language learners are always looking for clues to help themselves understand how the language works. They make guesses and ask people to correct them if they are wrong. They compare what they say with what others say. They record what they have learned and think about it.
Good language learners try to think in the language.
Good language learners prefer to think in the language. Though thinking in the language may not be easy at first, it is worth cultivating (培养). To help them think in the language, they can carry on with a dialogue when walking along, sitting on a bus, or taking a break from other studies. Use the language whenever and wherever they can.
What good language learners do
Don't be afraid of _____ risks. ●The most important thing in learning a language is _____.
