From Santa Barbara to Scotland, strangers are becoming friends by going on bike rides together. They get paired up by Cycling Without Age, an organization that helps seniors go for bike rides, even if they can’t pedal themselves.
Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence, who are roughly 20 years apart in age, have been riding together for years. The 56-year-old Lawrence serves as a “pilot”, driving the trishaw—a bike with a passenger seat in the front that Cycling Without Age uses for their rides. They go for rides about once a week, often discussing the history of their town.
“Despite my deceased parents, it gives me a connection with people from an older generation,” said Lawrence, “and I enjoy spending time with them and hearing their stories.”
The pair have formed a friendship outside of cycling. Lawrence said he calls Lyon often and goes to the gym with him to help him with exercises he can’t do on his own.
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age, said that’s the power of the program. “The truly powerful thing about these bike rides is that they tie people and stories together to create new relationships,” he told CBS News. “In my friendships—and the ability to form new relationships at any age—are what define a good life, and often also a long and happy life.”
John Boettner started the Santa Barbara chapter. He has one rule for passengers. “They say, ‘What does it cost if I’m going to go for a ride ’ I say, ‘Here’s what it costs: You have to wave. If you don’t wave, I’m going to kick you out,’” he joked. He said he likes when they hit red lights, because it gives them a chance to connect with people on the road. “Driving the trishaw is the best advertisement for Cycling Without Age”, Boettner said, “When you take a 101-year-old woman for a bike ride and she holds your hand tight and says thank you and gives you a kiss on the cheek, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
24.What did Lawrence benefit from Cycling Without Age
A.Picking up forgotten stories. B.Improving his health condition.
C.Understanding his parents’ love. D.Creating a relationship with seniors.

26.What can we learn from Boettner’s words in the last paragraph
A.The program needs to be advertised. B.Passengers have to pay for their rides.
C.Red lights connect people on the road. D.Bike riders feel fulfilled by offering rides.
27.What message does the passage convey

Animal rescuer and cinematographer Douglas Thorn’s passion for animals began when he was a little kid. “I started rescuing orphaned baby animals,” Thorn says. “And I wanted to be a wildlife cinematographer.”
When Thron grew up, he did just that, working for shows like Discovery Channels Shark Week, filming the great white sharks off the coast of Santa Cruz, California. But Thron says it was the Paradise Fire in California in 2018 that “pushed” him to do animal rescue activism work, putting his aerial cinematography skills to good use.
At the time, Thron was filming a man who was rescuing cats after the fire using an infrared hand-held camera. The camera uses heat to detect the animals at night Thron and the man talked about how incredible it would be to put one on a drone to detect animals more easily. “The animal's body temperature will glow on the screen and you can pick them out among the bricks and stones,” explains Thron.
The first animal Thron ever rescued was a dog in the Bahamas after a category-5 hurricane hit, which wiped out hundreds of houses. Thron tested out putting an infrared scope on a drone and found the dog.
“The drone really shaves off critical time so that the really badly hurt animals are able to be rescued,” Thron says. Once the scope picks up the “heat signature of an animal”, Thron turns a spotlight on the animal and zooms in on it, so he and the rescue crews can go and save the animal.
Thron has basically been “going non-stop since then”. His TV show, Doug to the Rescue, shows some of his heart-warming animal rescues, including after Hurricane Laura in Louisiana in 2020 and after fires in Northern California and Oregon. Thron also helped rescue koalas after fires damaged parts of Australia in 2020.
28.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Researching rare animals. B.Rescuing homeless animals.
C.Becoming a disaster rescuer. D.Working as a wildlife cinematographer.
29.What's Thron's purpose for attaching the infrared camera to the drone
A.To locate an animal quickly. B.To shoot more inviting photos.
C.To take animals' body temperature. D.To give warnings of dangers timely.
30.What's the fifth paragraph mainly about
A.The difficulties Thron has to overcome.
B.The skills Thron will need to operate the drone.
C.The way Thron uses the drone to rescue animals.
D.The reason why Thron chooses his present job.
31.According to the passage, which word can best describe Thron
A.Modest. B.Creative. C.Generous. D.Outgoing.

For people suffering from depression (抑郁), there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes (基因) were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
32.How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A.By analyzing a mass of data.
B.By conducting genetic research.
C.By comparing various levels of activity.
D.By tracking the subjects for many years.
33.What does the study show about depression
A.Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B.Exercise may decrease and prevent it.
C.Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D.Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
34.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Simple. B.Complex. C.Unusual. D.Common.
35.What is the purpose of the text
A.To discuss a disease. B.To introduce a scientific study.
C.To analyze a genetic risk. D.To explain a phenomenon.

It was Christmas Eve 1949. I was 15 and feeling sad because there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. After supper, I sat by the fireplace, waiting for Pa to read the Bible. But Pa didn’t get the Bible; instead, he went outside.
Several minutes later, he shouted in the yard, “Come on, Elizabeth. Bundle up. It’s cold out.” I was upset. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress; now Pa was dragging me out in the cold. As I opened the door, a big sled(雪橇)stood before me. I unwillingly climbed up. We loaded it with wood. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder whether the horses would be able to pull it. Before we set off, Pa hurried to the kitchen and returned with a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand. I felt puzzled and annoyed.
“What’s in the little sack ” I asked. “Shoes. They’re out of shoes. Little Jake had gunnysacks(黄麻袋)wrapped around his feet when I saw him digging for wood in the snow yesterday. I also brought some candy for the kids.”
We rode the two miles to the Little Jake’s place in silence. I tried to think through what Pa was doing. Widow(寡妇)Clark, Jack’s mother, had closer neighbors than us. Why was it our concern
We unloaded the wood and knocked on the door. Mrs. Clark opened the door. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The three children were huddled (挤在一起)underneath another blanket, sitting in front of a small fire.
Pa set the sack of flour on the table and handed her the other sack. She opened it hesitantly and took out the shoes, a pair for her and one pair for each of the children. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling as tears ran down her cheeks. She looked at Pa as if she wanted to say something, but nothing came out.
