Congratulations to Steve Langford from Christchurch, UK, who has won a Kawai piano. Langford wowed the judges with his 56-bar composition, Fairytale (童话).
A long-term subscriber (订阅者) to Pianist, Langford is retired, having enjoyed a career in engineering. During his early years he received some help from his brother on the knowledge of music, but he was mainly self-taught, learning by ear. “I was always attracted to the piano. I took some evening classes in piano and theory later on, but work left little time to practise. Now that I’ve retired I spend almost all my time at the piano. I always thought I had some musical ability, and though I don’t consider myself much of a pianist, I do enjoy composing.”
Langford entered last year’s competition with his Waltz for Ava, and was awarded runner-up (亚军). “Nearly winning last year added to my confidence. But now, winning… it’s the top of my musical achievements!” And what of the title, Fairytale “The piece is composed for a young YouTube pianist called Mayuki Miyashita. About ten years ago I came across a video of her at the age of ten playing a piece by Hiromi. I was so moved. I imagine her life must be like something of a fairy tale in itself. I have followed her progress ever since.”
Langford received a black Kawai ES520 piano. “I’m lucky to have it. It will replace my old one and be put to good use; I think it’s easier to record yourself and produce videos for YouTube on a digital.” Langford uploads his compositions to YouTube “for a bit of fun really. Because I don’t play in public, I don’t have the confidence, so I use it to encourage myself.”
The competition’s two runners-up were Erik Johannessen and Rebekah Raa. Special mentions also go to Abia Ng’s Pumpkin Walz. Thanks to over 100 people to the competition, who ensured a high standard and a tough day of decisions!

Some school leaders are left without a clear answer in the debate about whether fitness classes should be required to meet a school’s curriculum (课程) requirements.
To explain the issue, MSNBC analyzes a major study of physical education programs conducted by Cornell University. The study, based on information from 37,000 high school students’ responses to surveys from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), reveals that most students do not believe gym class is effective. This has led nearly all states to create and pass new bills (议案) to improve public schools’ fitness education programs.
Unfortunately, while many states have increased the time students spend in gym class, Cornell’s study found that adding 200 more minutes of time to gym class each week did not produce big changes. Even by adding 200 more weekly minutes, the studies showed that boys generally took part in only 7.5 minutes of more activity per day, while girls only joined in activity 8 additional minutes each week.
Attempting to explain these disappointing results, Cornell’s lead professor of policy analysis and management claims, “The rest of the extra gym time is likely spent sitting -- most likely standing around passively while playing sports like softball or volleyball that don’t require constant movement.” Similarly, a study of fitness classes in Texas elementary schools also found that the majority of students spent the class time inactive; specifically, the data suggested that students were only taking part in exercise or movement for about 3 minutes during the entire class period.
Despite the results, the lead professor of the Cornell’s study does not necessarily believe that gym classes should be stopped in public schools, arguing, “We’re not saying schools should get rid of physical education,” but “there has to be a meaningful change in the curriculum.”
28. What does the underlined word “This” refer to in paragraph 2
A. The survey from CDCP.
B. The debate on fitness classes.
C. The finding of Cornell’s study.
D. The change in fitness education.
29. How does the author present Cornell’s finding in paragraph 3
A. By asking a question. B. By listing figures.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving examples.
30. Why does the author mention the study in Texas elementary schools
A. To show students had no rest in gym classes.
B. To show the finding differed from Cornell’s study.
C. To prove students did not have many sport choices.
D. To prove the added gym time made little difference.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Time for more effective fitness classes.
B. Time for longer periods of gym classes.
C. Time to collect more students’ responses.
D. Time to stop fitness classes in public schools.

“Come and look! The green onions have grown a bit taller,” I waved at my wife, my eyes glued to a small plastic pot.
“Are you kidding ” she replied. “You only planted the seeds yesterday. How could it be so fast ” After a closer look, she murmured, as if to herself, “They have indeed inched up!”
About a week later, I “harvested” the first batch of green onions — the first time I had ever grown green onions by myself. Inspired by the unexpected success, I grew a second pot. They have been growing well.
The pleasant surprise from my “pot experiments” comes down to a simple pleasure from constant physical work.
“Farming, which enables one to work between heaven and Earth, can reward one with huge pleasure. As people cultivate the land, they are having a direct dialogue with nature that can hardly be possible if they stay behind closed doors in offices,” said Zhang Xiaode, director of the Research Center for Chinese Rural Civilization.
Cheng Minsheng, a professor of history and culture at Henan University, said many farmer-scholars during the Song Dynasty compiled (汇编) classical books on agriculture based on their lifelong experiences on farms.
A rural life not only provided these scholars with new ideas but also inspired philosophers. Martin Heidegger, one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century, once called the countryside “the root of philosophy”.
Duan Elgin said in his bestselling book The Living Universe that farm life brought him “the gift of deep silence”. “I recall lying down in a field of lettuce (生菜), nearly covered by its leaves and taking in the aliveness of the Earth, the fields and the sky above me,” Elgin said. “Later on, I moved to the city, where I felt a deep separation from the aliveness of my farming days.”
When I look at the soil in my small plastic pots, I no longer treat it as dirt like I would in the past. As I water the soil with my hands, I feel it’s alive.
32. How does the author’s wife feel about the green onions
A. Satisfied. B. Disappointed. C. Surprised. D. Anxious.
33. What bring huge pleasure according to Zhang Xiaode
A. Pot experiments. B. Farming activities.
C. Outdoor exercises. D. Natural communications.
34. Why are Martin Heidegger and Duan Elgin quoted (引用)
A. To introduce the famous scholars.
B. To indicate the benefits of farm life.
C. To explain the ways to grow lettuce.
D. To share the pleasure of writing books.
35. What is the author’s attitude to physical work
A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

After the summer break, I see an obvious change in my children: they are calmer, more in tune with their body’s natural rhythm, and have a renewed positive energy. 36
More energy
“Short breaks actually create the biggest changes in the long term,” says Charlotte Thaarup, Founder of the Mindfulness Clinic. “If you’re tired, take a break.” 37 Research shows it can clear your mind, improve your mood and even lower your blood pressure because we can’t be “on” all the time.
New ideas
A 2011 study found that when our brains are at rest, we are able to come up with new concepts and ideas. 38 “A good example of this is when we’ve been thinking hard about something and can’t seem to solve the challenge and, while in the shower, the penny drops,” says Charlotte.
Less stress
39 When we are in our busy mode (模式), we see the world through the eyes of doing tasks, making money, taking risks and getting rewards. But there are many different perspectives (视角) through which we can see life. A change in perspective is really good for mental health.
Healthier relationships
We tend to live much of our life in “drive” mode, meaning our focus in on “me and my task”. Then, our loved ones are seen as a distraction (分心) in getting where we want to go. That’s not good for maintaining a healthy relationship. 40
A. A 20-30 minute rest does good for you.
B. A relationship-focused mode makes you less stressed.
C. The creative ideas contribute to more positive emotions.
D. Taking time out will allow our brains to be a bit more creative.
E. Unproductive time away from work can help us deal with pressure.
F. Research shows that taking time out to relax can have many benefits.
G. Charlotte advises spending time each week relaxing with your loved ones.

Devon became the man of the house since his father passed away last year, but tonight he was a twelve-year old boy who wanted a puppy for his birthday, and his birthday was tomorrow.
“They say every boy should have a dog of his own, don’t you agree ”
I sighed, knowing what my answer would have to be. “I would love to get you a puppy, but puppies are expensive. They need food and shots and a license. We just can’t afford all that right now, honey.” I lowered my head so he wouldn’t see my tears.
He stood there for a moment. “That's okay, Mom. I understand,” he whispered. “But some day, when things get better, can we get a puppy ” “Of course, Devon, I promise.” I forced myself to smile.
“When we get a puppy, I am going to name him Rusty.”
“Rusty That’s a fine name.”
The next morning, I gathered our recyclable bottles and cans which were worth five cents each. We drove to the nearby convenience store and sold them at a nearby store. Then we chose the two most delicious donuts with the money.
Devon grabbed the donut and took a huge bite. On the front sidewalk, he stopped so suddenly that I almost ran into him.
A puppy caught his eye. A young woman was parked just outside the door. Her face was wet with tears. The puppy curled up (蜷缩) in her lap with his nose resting on the driver’s door.
Devon rushed over to the car and giggled (咯咯笑) as he fed the rest of his donut to the puppy and was thanked with a wet puppy lick across the face.
Then I turned to the woman: “What’s wrong ”

The woman dried her face before answering. “I got this puppy a couple weeks ago. I thought maybe the puppy would be fun company for the kids and me. But my husband was very angry! He demanded that I take him to the animal shelter.” She paused as tears started to form again. “But I just can’t.” The woman ran her fingers through the puppy’s thick fur. “He sure likes you,” she told Devon. “Any chance you could take him ”
“Really ” Devon took a deep breath and turned to me. I reached forward and touched the soft fur. “Please take him,” she begged. “He is such a friendly and well-behaved dog. The kids named him Rusty, but you can change it if you like.” “Rusty ” Devon whispered. Moments later, Devon buried his face in the soft fur while the puppy slept on his lap during the short ride home. Devon’s birthday wish was granted, as was my prayer to give him the perfect gift.
