For example, UNESCO has 45 World Heritage places in Italy, 42 in Spain, but Peru, famous for its ancient Incan buildings, has only 9 World Heritage places. Guatemala has only 3.The fund recently released a list of cultural treasures in the developing world that are in danger of disappearing. These places are important because they are records of our human civilization. Globalization has created an international culture that is about sameness. But the endangered places are trying to protect the rich differences of human culture throughout history. One of the fund’s current projects is in Guatemala’s (危地马拉) Mirador Basin, which contains several important examples of ancient Mayan settlements. The buildings are surrounded by forests.Centuries of tree growth has covered the pyramids and religious buildings, which provides some of the finest examples of the early part of the Mayan civilization But this area is in danger from robbers and people cutting trees illegally. Also, over the past ten years, over 70% of the natural environment in the area has been destroyed by fires. The fund has 3 goals for its Mirador project. One is helping the government obtain UNESCO recognition. Another is establishing permanent protection for the area. And the third is working to make the area a sustainable protected area within 10 years. To meet these goals, money from the fund will go toward restoring the buildings of El Mirador and mapping and exploring newly discovered buildings. The fund is also paying to train local guides on how to stop theft and illegal tree-cutting. Educational programs are helping to give people in the area the skills they need to have jobs that do not endanger this protected area. The Global Heritage Fund says we have a duty to the people of the past, present and future to make sure we do not lose these examples of human history. Every country, organization and individual can play a role in helping to protect this rich history.4. Why does the Global Heritage Fund focus on protecting cultural places in developing countries A. They are fascinating and dangerous. B. They are more important to mankind.C. They are attractive to tourists. D. They are poor and often ignored.5. Why is protecting the endangered places important in the time of globalization A. Because the rich differences of human culture should be preserved.B. Because the developing world needs them to make money.C. Because they can help speed up the process of globalization.D. Because we should create an international culture about sameness.6. What does the Mirador project mainly want to achieve A. Financial cooperation. B. National recognition.C. Sustainable protection. D. Employment promotion.7. What can be a suitable title for the text A. World Heritage in Danger B. Every Project MattersC. The Global Heritage Fund D. Every Individual Matters【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. 由第一段中的“The Global Heritage Fund, a nonprofit organization, aims to protect places of cultural importance in developing countries for the reasons that these countries often have few resources to protect such places and that other major cultural organizations often pay more attention to protecting places in developed countries. (全球遗产基金是一个非营利组织,旨在保护发展中国家具有重要文化意义的地方,原因是这些国家通常没有多少资源来保护这些地方,而其他主要文化组织往往更重视保护发达国家的地方)”可知,发展中国家具通常没有多少资源来保护这些地方,可得出全球遗产基金专注于保护发展中国家的文化场所,因为它们很贫穷,而且经常被忽视。故选D项。【5题详解】细节理解题。由第二段中的“These places are important because they are records of our human civilization. (这些地方很重要,因为它们是我们人类文明的记录)”和“But the endangered places are trying to protect the rich differences of human culture throughout history. (但这些濒临灭绝的地方正试图保护历史上人类文化的丰富差异)”可知,在全球化时代保护濒危地区很重要的原因是人类文化的丰富差异应该被保留。故选A项。 由第五段“The fund has 3 goals for its Mirador project. One is helping the government obtain UNESCO recognition. Another is establishing permanent protection for the area. And the third is working to make the area a sustainable protected area within 10 years. With the frequency of space launches dramatically increasing in recent years, the potential for a disastrous collision above Earth is continually growing. Now, Japanese orbital clean-up company Astroscale is testing a potential solution. The firm’s End-of-Life Services by Astroscale demonstration mission is scheduled to lift off on 20 March aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket. It consists of two spacecraft: a smaller “client” satellite and a larger “servicer” satellite, or “chaser”. The smaller satellite is equipped with a magnetic (磁力的) plate which allows the chaser to dock with it.The two stacked spacecraft will perform three tests once in orbit, each of which will involve the servicer satellite releasing and then recapturing the client satellite. The first test will be the simplest, with the client satellite drifting a short distance away and then being recaptured. In the second test, the servicer satellite will set the client satellite tumbling before catching up with it and matching its motion to grab it.Finally, if those two tests go well, the chaser will live up to its name by letting the client satellite float a few hundred metres away before finding it and attaching to it. All of these tests will be performed autonomously, with little to no human input once they are set in motion.“These kinds of demonstrations have never been done before in space — they are very different to, say, an astronaut controlling a robotic arm on the International Space Station,” says Jason Forshaw at Astroscale UK. “This is more of an autonomous mission.” At the end of the tests, both spacecraft will burn up in Earth’s atmosphere. If companies wanted to use this capability, they would have to attach a magnetic plate to their satellites so they could be captured later. Because of the growing space garbage problem, many countries now require firms to have a way to bring back their satellites once they run out of fuel or fail, so this could be a fairly simple likely plan, Forshaw says. Right now, each chaser can only nab one satellite, but Astroscale is working on a version that could drag three or four out of orbit at once.8. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “dock with” in Paragraph 2 A. Join together. B. Keep up with.C. Deal with. D. Crash.9. Why many countries now require firms to have a way to bring back their satellites A. Because they can earn large profits from it.B. Because the frequency of space launches are dramatically increasing.C. Because of the growing space waste problem.D. Because Astroscale has found a new method of capturing the space garbage.10. What will Astroscale do to solve the space junk problem A. An astronaut controls a robotic arm on the International Space to capture the “client” satellite.B. Through a magnetic plate remotely controlled by humans on the ground to catch the “client” satellite.C. Tumbling to match the motion of “client” satellite the drag three or four satellites out of its orbit into atmosphere.D. Finding the “client” satellite and attaching to it with a magnetic plate automatically.11. What can we infer from the passage A. people will burn the space junk up in Earth’s atmosphere in the future.B. the demonstration mission will be divided into three phases.C. These kinds of demonstrations have never been done before.D. Japan and Russia will conduct space debris cleanup experiment together.【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B【解析】【导语】本文是一篇说明文。随着近年来空间发射频率的急剧增加,地球上空发生灾难性碰撞的可能性不断增大。现在,日本轨道清理公司Astroscale正在测试一种解决方案,以期应对日益严重的太空垃圾问题。【8题详解】词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“It consists of two spacecraft: a smaller “client” satellite and a larger “servicer” satellite, or “chaser”. The smaller satellite is equipped with a magnetic (磁力的) plate(它由两个航天器组成:一个较小的“客户”卫星和一个较大的“服务”卫星,或称“追逐者”卫星。较小的卫星装有磁板)”可知,这颗较小的卫星装有一块磁板,可以让“追逐者”与它对接由。由此可知,划线部分dock with与join together的意思相近,表示“连接在一起”的意思。故选A。【9题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Because of the growing space garbage problem, many countries now require firms to have a way to bring back their satellites once they run out of fuel or fail, so this could be a fairly simple likely plan, Forshaw says. (Forshaw说,由于日益严重的太空垃圾问题,许多国家现在要求公司在卫星燃料耗尽或出现故障时有办法将其带回,因此这可能是一个相当简单的可行计划)”可知,因为日益严重的太空垃圾问题,许多国家现在要求公司带回他们的卫星。故选C。【10题详解】细节理解题。根据第二段的“It consists of two spacecraft: a smaller “client” satellite and a larger “servicer” satellite, or “chaser”. The smaller satellite is equipped with a magnetic (磁力的) plate which allows the chaser to dock with it. (它由两个航天器组成:一个小型的“客户”卫星和一个较大的“服务”卫星,或称“追逐者”。较小的卫星配备了使追踪器与之对接的板磁力板)”,第三段第一句“The two stacked spacecraft will perform three tests once in orbit, each of which will involve the servicer satellite releasing and then recapturing the client satellite. (两个堆叠的航天器将在轨道上进行三次试验,每一次试验都将涉及释放服务卫星,然后重新捕获客户卫星)”以及第四段最后一句“All of these tests will be performed autonomously, with little to no human input once they are set in motion. (所有这些测试都将自动执行,一旦启动,几乎不需要人工输入)”可知,Astroscale公司会通过服务卫星找到客户卫星,服务卫星通过客户卫星上的磁力板连接上客户卫星,进而捕获客户卫星,整个过程都是自动执行的。通过这样的过程,就可以捕获太空中的垃圾。故选D。【11题详解】推理判断题。根据第三段中“The two stacked spacecraft will perform three tests once in orbit, each of which will involve the servicer satellite releasing and then recapturing the client satellite. (两个堆叠的航天器将在轨道上进行三次试验,每一次试验都将涉及服务卫星释放,然后重新捕获客户卫星 )”可知,这个示范任务将会进行三个不同的测试。由此推知,演示任务会被分成三个不同阶段。故选B。DWhen I was 10 years old, I asked a neighborhood kid who was older than me, “Which city is further west: Reno. Nev., or Los Angeles ” The correct answer is Reno. Nevada. But he was convinced it was the other way around. He was so convinced that Los Angeles was west of Reno that he was willing to bet me two dollars. So I went into the house to get my Rand McNally Map. The kid looked at the map and said. “The map is drawn funny.” It wasn’t. Was his argument that the map didn’t preserve east, west, north and south What kind of map would that be I showed him if you trace down the 120-degree west line of longitude (经度)--which runs almost directly through Reno, Nev. — you end up in the Pacific Ocean, somewhere west of Los Angeles. He replied that lines of longitude don’t cross the ocean. What I told him that the lines of longitude were there to show how far west or east some location was, regardless of whether it was on land or on sea. There was one problem, however. He was bigger than me.I drew a number of conclusions from this story. There is such a thing as truth, but we often tend to ignore it. Also, it’s not just thinking something that makes it true. Truth is not relative. It’s not subjective. It may be hidden. People may wish to ignore it. But there is such a thing as truth and pursuit (追求)of truth: trying to figure out what has really happened, trying to figure out how things really are.Almost 15 years ago, I came across a story about an innocent man, a man who had been sentenced to death in the Huntsville, Texas, electric chair. And through hard work and luck, I was able to make the movie The Thin Blue Line and to help get him out of prison. What kept me going was the belief that there had to be answers to the questions. “Did he do it ” “Was he guilty or innocent ”“If he didn’t do it, who did ”and that I could find an answer to these questions through investigating (调查).It’s not that we find truth with big “T”. We investigate and sometimes we find things out and sometimes don’t. There’s no way to know in advance. It’s just that we have to go ahead as though there are answers to questions. We must go ahead as though in principle, we can find things out — even if we can’t. The alternative is unacceptable.I will never know whether the neighborhood kid really didn’t understand the logic of my argument about Reno. Nev. Or whether he understood it completely and just didn’t want to admit it. Or whether he understood it and just didn’t want to admit it. Or whether he understood it and just didn’t want to pay up. I’ll never know. All I know is I never got my two dollars12. Why does the author tell the story of the neighborhood boy A. To recall his good old days. B. To introduce the topic of finding truth.C. To show his good sense of direction. D. To stress the importance of geography.13. Why did the boy say “The map is drawn funny.” in Paragraph 2 A. Because he had fun reading maps. B. Because there were some mistakes in the map.C. Because the map was drawn in a different way. D. Because he refused to admit his mistake.14. What encouraged the author to make the movie The Thin blue Line A. His belief in finding answers. B. His willingness to help.C. His devotion to films. D. His mercy for the innocent man.15. What can we learn from the passage A. Great minds think alike. B. It’s never too late to learn.C. Honesty is the best policy. D. Truth never fears investigation.【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. According to the passage, Sue Townsend is ______.A. an actress B. a musician C. a writer D. a directorBThe Global Heritage Fund, a nonprofit organization, aims to protect places of cultural importance in developing countries for the reasons that these countries often have few resources to protect such places and that other major cultural organizations often pay more attention to protecting places in developed countries. The buildings are surrounded by forests.Centuries of tree growth has covered the pyramids and religious buildings, which provides some of the finest examples of the early part of the Mayan civilization (玛雅文明). But this area is in danger from robbers and people cutting trees illegally. Why is protecting the endangered places important in the time of globalization A Because the rich differences of human culture should be preserved.B. Because the developing world needs them to make money.C. Because they can help speed up the process of globalization.D. Because we should create an international culture about sameness.6. What does the Mirador project mainly want to achieve A. Financial cooperation. B. National recognition.C Sustainable protection. D. Employment promotion.7. What can be a suitable title for the text A. World Heritage in Danger B. Every Project MattersC. The Global Heritage Fund D. Every Individual MattersCA satellite is about to demonstrate a new way of capturing space junk with magnets for the first time. What will Astroscale do to solve the space junk problem A An astronaut controls a robotic arm on the International Space to capture the “client” satellite.B. Japan and Russia will conduct space debris cleanup experiment together.DWhen I was 10 years old, I asked a neighborhood kid who was older than me, “Which city is further west: Reno. We must go ahead as though, in principle, we can find things out — even if we can’t. All I know is I never got my two dollars.12. D. Truth never fears investigation.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Having good communication skills is important. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “ Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree for her, ” said the advertisement.“This is perfect!” thought Eric. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters.
