Welcome to Iceland! I hope that your trip will be pleasant. The following includes very important
information you might find useful for your travel and we hope you will enjoy it.
Iceland is becoming a very popular place to visit all year round and we are not surprised. The country
with its spectacular, fragile and raw nature, hot springs, icebergs and waterfalls is a feast for the eyes both
during summer and winter. Our history and culture is young compared to most other countries. We speak our
own language, Icelandic, which due to the country’s isolation in the past, has been very well preserved.
Driving in Iceland can be a bit different from many other countries. We do have a number of gravel roads,
single lane bridges, narrow roads, rough mountain roads with unbridged rivers, animal stock near or on the
road and weather conditions can change quickly. Therefore driving in Iceland needs your full care during your
stay because we want you back safe and happy.
We kindly ask you to help us improve our quality by giving us feedback on how we are doing and what
we can do better. Not less importantly, we ask you to help us preserve the Icelandic nature which can be very
fragile. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden and please do not litter.
In case of trouble, accident or breakdown please don’t hesitate to contact our emergency phone numbers
840-6010 for south and west Iceland, or 840-6000 for north and east Iceland or one of our many locations
around the country and we will do our very best to help you to safely continue your journey.
I trust that your travel in Iceland will be comfortable and pleasant. I wish you a safe journey.

My almost 6-year-old son is currently crazy about Star Wars and Harry Potter. I know he’s young, but the
movies and books bring up topics for us to sort through all the time — tough topics. A good chance for me!
We read the books together; we watch the movies together. We’ve talked about many things that some parents
of a 5-year-old might not talk about, but I want to have these conversations with my son.
Today, it was rainy and when the baby took her nap, I allowed him to watch a Star Wars movie as a reward
for being so kind this morning to his sister who was feeling a little unhappy. As I was folding laundry, I said
to him, very casually, “Wow, that Darth Vader really makes me sick.” My son chided me, “Mama, Darth Vader
has good in him. I know he’s on the dark side, but he isn’t all bad.” This launched us into a conversation about
good versus evil and how goodness can be found in anyone if we only look hard enough.
For the past week, I feel like I have been tested with various examples of people simply not being nice.
And some people were rude for no apparent reason. A nurse was impatient with me on the phone when I called
for a prescription. Little ears were listening in on all of those instances and after doing my best to be nice on
the phone call with the nurse, I hung up and said to my husband, “Wow, what was wrong with her She was
so rude.” My boy said, “Mama, we all have a bad day. Be nice to her and she might be nice to you back.” This
child teaches me lessons every day, and all we can do is treat people with kindness, as hard as it might be.
The nurse was probably exhausted from taking sick calls and maybe she simply needed a coffee break. I
do know that those people were not on their best behavior or showing their best side but how many of us have
been in those exact shoes We all act in haste. We all speak in haste. We all do things we regret. And, if we
were lucky, we were met with kindness instead of anger in return for our outburst.
My son reminded me today to be kinder and gentler to the people I meet with. I’m going to try harder this
week. I’m going to try to smile when met with a frown. Like he mentions, even Darth Vader has good in him
and maybe he just needs a little sympathy.
24. How does the writer react to her son’s recent interest
A. Using it as a chance to express her regret.
B. Trying to persuade him to change his mind.
C. Trying to help him develop some more hobbies.
D. Using it as a chance to have a deep talk with him.
25. Which expression can best replace the underlined word “chided” in paragraph 2
A. Awarded. B. Criticized. C. Deceived. D. Registered.

Bioluminescence (生物发光) is a natural phenomenon wherein a chemical reaction within an organism’s
body produces light. It can be found in many places in nature — fireflies, some mushrooms — but mostly in
the deep sea.
Recently, Rambouillet, a small historic French town, has teamed up with a company called Glowee to
turn the city into a full-scale bioluminescence laboratory. The goal is to change the way in which cities use
light. The company uses marine (海洋的) bacteria harvested from the coast of France. It makes some of the
town’s public light up in the cool blue of bioluminescence.
These bioluminescent bacteria are stored in a seawater filled tube, giving the bacteria room to float around
and light up. The light provided by the bacteria is part of their natural metabolism (新陈代谢), so producing
the light requires no energy other than that which is needed to feed the organisms. This makes it much more
environmentally friendly and sustainable than electric light, which consumes a huge amount of non-renewable
energy.
“On the way to lighting up the world with bioluminescence, you have to feed the bacteria and add water
as they grow. That’s not so easy. The phenomenon will be very temperature-dependent and I doubt that it will
work in the winter. Also, bioluminescence is not very bright compared to electrical lighting, though they have
improved the light intensity,” Carl Johnson, a professor from Vanderbilt University said.
One potential solution to these issues — and one that Glowee is looking into — is to remove the biological
aspect of the whole process. Theoretically, luciferase (荧光素酶) can be removed from the bacteria and used
to create light instead of the bacteria itself. Because luciferase is non-living, it doesn’t need to be fed. Creating
new means of sustainable lighting is a way of being environmentally friendly without plunging the earth back
into darkness.

For nearly three decades, we have waited anxiously for an effective drug that could defeat Alzheimer’s
disease. We believed we had identified the root cause behind this condition: sticky clumps of the protein beta-
amyloid (β 淀粉样蛋白) in the brain. Even as drug after drug on this target failed to make a difference to
symptoms, we continued to pour more money into the effort.
Regrettably, it is now becoming clear that this time could have been better spent zooming out (相机镜头
变焦以使景物缩小) from beta-amyloid, to look at the big picture of possible Alzheimer’s causes.
Doing so reveals a far more complicated and dangerous illness. It seems to be a condition that doesn’t
have a lone underlying trigger, but instead results from multiple processes and risk factors.
By thinking of Alzheimer’s in the same way as we do various conditions like heart disease, researchers
are now combining knowledge from across disciplines (学科) to identify, and tackle, the many known risk
factors.
This new approach comes not a moment too soon, because 10 million new cases of dementia (痴呆) are
第 6 页 共 12 页
{#{QQABCY6EogCAABBAAABCAwGgCkGQkhACCAgGRAAYIEIAyRFABCA=}#}
diagnosed globally each year. The vast majority of these, between 60 and 70 per cent, are Alzheimer’s disease.
As people are living longer than ever, the number of people living with dementia is predicted to almost double
every 20 years.
Accepting that Alzheimer’s is more complicated than we thought might seem discouraging. And yet,
targeting the many factors in the disease, including the role of infections, diet, sleep habits and inflammation
(发炎), puts some control back in our own hands, because these are things we can all do something about. It
means we don’t have to simply wait for drug companies to deliver: we can also cut our own chances of getting
dementia.
Tunnel vision has held us back for too long. With this new approach, a single effective drug might well
be out of the picture, but instead, there is a real possibility that we could break down Alzheimer’s by a thousand
tiny cuts.
32. We can learn from the first and second paragraphs that the author believes that ______.
A. we have been focusing on a single cause for far too long
B. developing an effective drug was worth our money and efforts
C. there will be one effective drug that can cure Alzheimer’s disease
D. the protein beta-amyloid has nothing to do with Alzheimer’s disease
33. By mentioning heart disease in the fourth paragraph, the author intends to ______.
A. emphasize that we should attach great importance to tackling Alzheimer’s disease
B. show the unexpected difficulty in identifying the causes of Alzheimer’s disease
C. explain that the causes of Alzheimer’s disease are various and multidisciplinary
D. predict that Alzheimer’s disease will be cured in the same way as the heart disease
34. With the new approach to viewing Alzheimer’s disease, people are more likely to ________.
A. kill Alzheimer’s disease for good
B. live 20 years longer than their expected lifespan
C. suffer from heart disease than from Alzheimer’s disease
D. reduce the possibility of getting Alzheimer’s disease
35. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. There will be a drug developed to defeat Alzheimer’s in the future.
B. The growing seriousness of Alzheimer’s is beyond people’s expectations.
C. People should rely on themselves instead of drugs to deal with diseases.
D. Zooming out for a big picture helps to lower the risks of getting Alzheimer’s.

Learning to Love Locally-Grown Foods
Cooking shows on TV are usually all about foreign foods. Thanks to globalization, people everywhere
are introducing their taste buds to dishes from every corner of the world. 36 In the past few years, the
number of people purchasing local foods has been rising because it offers a lot of benefits.
For starters, local food is often tastier because it is fresher. Imported goods must be flown or shipped in
from far away, so they naturally lose some of their freshness during the journey. 37 These materials
may cause the nutritional value of these goods to decline during the shipping process. Food safety is another
reason why people are choosing local produce. Today’s laws regarding foods vary from country to country.
38 But when you know the local farmer who grows your food, the chances of it being polluted are greatly
reduced.
Buying local foods can also have a beneficial impact on the environment. Buying local, consumers can
maintain green space and farmland in their communities. Besides, if farmers can sell directly to consumers,
they will earn more money for their families. Additional profits also enable farmers to better care for their soil
and keep quality standards high. 39
40 This is an open area where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, and meat directly to the public. Once
you experience the freshness of local foods for yourself, it might be tough to go back to the supermarket.
A. In the end, it’s a win-win situation for both parties.
B. Foreign foods have already dominated home markets.
C. To conclude, the farmers can make money and improve their life.
D. At the same time, other people are discovering that food from their area is the best.
E. If you’re interested in having more local foods, you can even attend a farmers’ market.
F. This causes confusion and makes it difficult to check if any harmful chemicals were used.
G. Imported goods must also be packaged in plastic or other containers to survive the journey.

The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his 1969 Chevy Malibu convertible (敞篷车), beautifully
repainted cherry red with V-8 engine. Hannah and I could drive around Tucson with the top down.
Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much taller. “Hannah’s a beautiful girl,” my mother always
said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modeling agency.
A month after my birthday, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the

McDonald’s drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. “Let’s ride around a while,” I said.
It was a clear night, full moon casting low over the desert. Making a turn too fast, I hit a patch of dirt and the
back of the car slid to the other side. I then drove through a neighbor’s backyard wall and knocked into a full-
grown palm tree.
There were French fries on the floor, the dash (仪表盘), and my lap. An impossible amount of blood was
on Hannah’s face, pieces of skin hanging beside her eyes. They took us in separate ambulances. In the
emergency room, my parents spoke quietly, “Best plastic surgeon (整形医生) in the city…but it is more likely
to be the end of her modeling career.…”
I’d broken my cheek bone on the steering wheel (方向盘); Hannah’s forehead had split (撕裂) wide open
on the dash.
What would I say to her
When her mother, Amber, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, preparing myself for her anger.
She sat beside me and took my hand. “I rear-ended (追尾) my best friend when I was your age,” she said. “I
destroyed her car and mine.” “I’m so sorry.” I said, knowing Amber was trying her best to comfort me and
helping me out of my terrible sense of guilt and self-blame. “The most important is that you’re both alive. I
forgive you and Hannah will too.” She said.

Everyone has a natural sleep routine. You go to bed and wake up at a certain time. But everyone’s routine is
not the same. Some people--the early birds--go to bed early at night (around 9:00 or 10:00 pm). In the morning,
they wake up easily and are energetic. Others--the night owls--stay awake late (until midnight or later). For
them, it is difficult to wake up early. What do we know about early birds and night owls Here is what studies
show.
Teenagers are natural night owls. Also, most need nine to ten hours’ sleep a night. But in many places, the
school or work day starts at 8:00 am. For this reason, only one in five teenagers sleeps enough. More early
birds get good grades in school, but night owls do better on some intelligence tests, according to a study of
1,000 Spanish teens. People with high scores on these tests usually get good jobs.
