Families are taking down their decorations and throwing out their trees when Christmas has come to an end. However, one man in Texas is re using the trees for a good cause. Willis started the organization when he found himself in need of a strong cane, he told CBS News.

He decided to ask for a suitable replacement (替代品) from the organization Free Canes for Veterans. Oscar Morris, who ran the organization, apologized to Willis because they were all handed out.
He then considered making one for himself. Luckily, with the help of Morris, Willis made his first cane. Morris encouraged him to make another cane for someone else in need, which gave Willis an idea, He started the Canes for Veterans Central Texas.
During its first year, Willis simply collected thrown-away trees and wood. Now, after getting some attention, Willis has received many donated Christmas trees from neighbors and natives. Since 2016, Willis and his team have made 222 canes for veterans in need. He’s even started to make the canes with slogans (标语) and designs chosen by the veterans, making each one meaningful to those veterans.
“It’s a great feeling,” he told CBS News. “It takes their eyes off their so called disability and it takes their eye to the cane. Across the world, studies have consistently found that girls perform significantly better than boys in reading. These studies show that girls typically read more frequently than boys, and have a more positive attitude toward reading.
There are several reasons that help explain these gender-based differences. Parents read more with their daughters. This sends a strong and early message that books are for girls, as well as equipping girls with a significant advantage. Recent research has found even though boys read less frequently than girls, girls still receive more encouragement to read from their parents.
So how can parents and educators help bridge this socially-engineered gap for boys’ reading
To improve boys’ reading performance, parents and educators may look for ways to connect boys with reading. This has led to discussion about the importance of promoting so-called “boy-friendly” books that boys supposedly “prefer” These are typically assumed to be non-fiction works, as many people believed that boys prefer to read non-fiction.
But this belief is not supported by recent research, which in fact suggests boys are more likely to choose to read fiction than non-fiction. Encouraging all boys to read non-fiction under the mistaken belief that it is their preference may actually be harmful. Fiction readers read more frequently and demonstrate faster language learning and higher language ability.
Besides encouraging more fiction reading, there are a number of ways that we can help connect boys with books. Firstly, don’t assume that boys of the same age have the same interests or that their interests stay the same over time. To match boys with suitable reading material, have regular discussions about reading for pleasure in order to keep up with their interests.
Schools should also provide access to libraries during lessons throughout the years of schooling. Girls visit the library in their free time more than boys, and as students move to higher grades they often have less access to libraries during class. Access to books for boys is essential to promote reading.
In addition, we should keep paper books available because research shows that boys are less likely to choose to read on screens than girls. Finally we should promote reading as an enjoyable pastime by being a role model. Let your children or students see you read for pleasure.
8. According to the author, what is the main cause of the difference in boys’ and girls’ reading ability
A. Social factors.
B. Teaching methods.
C. Personal preferences.
D. Psychological differences.
9. Why does the author recommend that adults regularly talk to boys about reading
A. To persuade boys to read more often.
B. To learn what boys are most interested in.
C. To help boys improve their language ability.
D. To show that adults are good reading role models.
10. When should schools give students additional library access according to the author
A. Before and after class.
B At any time of the school day.
C. At regular times during class.
D. When they are in the lower grades.
11. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To show students ways to improve their reading.
B. To explain why boys are not as good at reading as girls.
C. To urge governments to provide more reading resources.
D. To provide strategies that can help improve boys’ reading ability.
D
It’s easy to believe that robots are stealing jobs from human workers and badly affect the job market; after all, you’ve likely heard that they are tracking and moving packages without the use of human hands.
But there’s no need to worry about a robot takeover just yet, says a new study from BYU sociology professor Eric Dahlin. Dahlin’s research found that robots aren’t replacing (取代) humans at the rate most people think, but people are likely to greatly exaggerate (夸大) the rate of robot takeover.
To understand the relationship between job loss and robots, Dahlin surveyed nearly 2, 000 people about their views on jobs being replaced by robots. They were first asked to guess what is the percentage of employees whose employers (雇主) have replaced jobs with robots. They were then asked whether their employers have ever replaced their jobs with robots.
The study found that only 14% of workers say they’ve seen their job replaced by a robot. But those who have experienced job displacement due to a robot overstate the effect of robots taking jobs from humans by about three times.
“Our understanding of robots taking over jobs is greatly exaggerated,” says Dahlin. Those who haven’t lost jobs overstate it by about double, and those who have lost jobs overstate it by about three times. Eye-catching headlines saying a bad future of employment have likely overblown the situation of robots taking over jobs.
The finding fits early studies, which suggest that robots aren’t replacing workers. Rather, workplaces, where both employees and robots are working together, deliver more value in a way. “An everyday example is an autonomous machine at your local department store,” says Dahlin. “This robot cleans the floors while employees clean under shelves or other difficult-to-reach places.”
12. How did Eric Dahlin carry out his research
A. By asking people questions. B. By comparing early studies.
C. By interviewing employers. D. By studying new businesses.
13. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Bad effects of technology. B. A fall in laid-off workers.
C. Benefits of using robots. D. The finding of the study.
14. What might deepen people’s worry about robot takeover according to the text
A. Low pay. B. News reports.
C. Physical health. D. Fewer workplaces,
15. Which statement will Eric Dahlin probably agree with
A. Robots can work as human partners. B. Job markets will be affected seriously.
C. All human workers will be replaced. D. Work experience matters too much.

14 What might deepen people’s worry about robot takeover according to the text
A. Low pay. B. News reports.
C. Physical health. D. Fewer workplaces,
15. Which statement will Eric Dahlin probably agree with
A. Robots can work as human partners. B. Job markets will be affected seriously.
C. All human workers will be replaced. D. Work experience matters too much.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. A

【答案】Dear Editor,
Recently our class had a heated discussion about whether it is worthwhile for mankind to explore space. The opinions were divided, with 40% of the students opposing the idea and 60% supporting it.
Those who are against space exploration argue that it is a waste of money, which could be used to solve pressing issues like poverty and hunger on Earth. They also worry about the potential pollution that may occur in space, which could further harm our environment.
On the other hand, the majority of students support space exploration. They believe that it provides us with a better means to cope with natural disasters. Moreover, conducting scientific experiments in space could lead to groundbreaking discoveries, as some experiments can only be conducted in a zero-gravity environment.
Personally I find myself leaning towards supporting space exploration. While I acknowledge the concerns about the cost and potential pollution, I believe that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
Yours,
Li Hua
