It was a hot day in June of 1968 when we realized that this summer was going to be different from previous ones. Grandpa
was working up on the farmhouse roof, loudly complaining about a crow (乌鸦) dropping frogs down the chimney. Grandma
came outside to watch. “I wondered what was putting the fire out! That crow!” The crow landed on the roof and introduced
himself, “CAW!” This was the start of our family’s love-hate relationship with a naughty crow we called Fred.
We kids would be playing in the yard and Fred would be playing too. He’d jump up and swing from the laundry Grandma
had hung on the clothesline. Grandma would make him go away, but he’d soon be back, stealing clothespins (晾衣夹) off the
line. There would be laundry all over the yard. We kids thought it was hilarious—Grandma, not so much.
Sometimes things weren’t so funny, though. We would hear one of the girls screaming and immediately know it was
because of Fred. The girl would be seen running down the path with Fred dive-bombing her.
Hair clips (夹子 ) weren't the only thing Fred wanted. He also loved jewelry and anything shiny. Everyone learned to
never leave anything we valued on the picnic table. We kids also blamed the crow for everything that summer. “I don’t know.
Fred must have taken it” was a familiar response. But I just knew there was a tree back in the woods filled with Fred’s
treasures.
Fred flew away sometime that summer and never came back. We still got excited at any crow flying around, but always
knew it wasn’t Fred. He would have dived down for a visit and tried to steal something. That summer was more than 50 years
ago, but I still call out to any crow I see, “Fred, is that you, Fred ”

Breaking ground on what will be the first 3D-printed community in the world, a large 3D printer built two houses in a poor
area of Mexico. The houses aren't just models. Developers hoped to build 50 new 3D-printed houses, replacing the structures
that residents built by themselves out of wood, metal, and whatever materials they could afford.
These residents live in a seismic zone (地震带) that tends to be affected by flooding. Building something that can stand an
earthquake and keep people dry during heavy rain was a key consideration
when it came to the design of the houses.
New Story, the non-profit organization building the houses, has built more than 2,300 homes in South America and Mexico
since it was founded in 2014. This is the first homebuilding project it has done with 3D printing. The organization paired up
with ICON, a construction technology company that developed the 3D-printing robotics being used on the project. The homes
were co-designed with the families who will live in them.
According to New Story, 3D printing is much faster than regular construction. The printer prints out a concrete mix that
hardens when it dries, building the walls one layer at a time. It takes about 24 hours to build two houses at the same time. Since
3D printing is also cheaper than traditional construction, there is great potential for how it will change the world.
The technology holds promise for affordable housing. New Story is excited about what the technology could mean for people
who don't have safe shelter. Brett Hagler, the CEO and co-founder of the organization, said safe shelter is "one of the largest
crises affecting humanity today". The technology is there, and the application to build homes for those in need brings a lot of
hope for the future.
28. What did the design of the 3D-printed houses mainly consider
A. The structures of the old houses. B. The materials available in the area.
C. The financial ability of the organization. D. The environmental conditions of the area.
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The design process. B. The introduction of ICON.
C. The teams behind the project. D. The differences between New Story and ICON.
30. What makes the new technology meaningful
A. It can end human crises. B. It can provide shelter free of charge.
C. It can replace traditional construction. D. It can offer safe housing to the homeless.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. 3D Printing Becomes a Reality. B. Technologies Change the Future.
C. 3D Printing Helps with Housing Problems. D. Technologies Bring Hope to Mexican Cities.

Talking on video-conference software like Zoom during the coronavirus pandemic has helped older people stave off the effects
of dementia, a new study has suggested.
Researchers found that regular communication helps maintain long-term memory, and elderly people who often use online
tools showed less decline in memory than those who don't.
The study, by the University of West London's Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory, studied the communication of
11,418 men and women over the age of 50. They were asked how often they interacted with friends and family online, on the
phone and in person, and then completed memory tests that involved recalling a list of 10 words at various intervals. The
participants who only used traditional, face-to-face communication showed more signs of cognitive (认知) decline than those
who used technology to keep in touch with friends and family.
“This shows for the first time the impact of diverse, frequent and meaningful interactions on long-term memory, and
specifically, how supplementing (补充 ) more traditional methods with online social activity may achieve that among older
adults,” the study's leader Snorri Rafnsson said.
“With more and more older adults now using online communication so frequently, especially during the past year of global
lockdowns, it poses the question as to what extent technology can help sustain (维持 ) relationships and overcome social
isolation, and how that can also help maintain brain health,” he also said.
A study last year found that negative thinking is linked to dementia later in life. And separate research found that the
decrease in motivation and goal-directed behavior could also be a trigger (起因) in older adults.
32. What does the study mainly find about online social activities
A. They help treat memory loss.
B. They reduce the risk of dementia for seniors.
C. They attract more senior citizens than before.
D. They offer more benefits than traditional activities.
33. What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about regarding the study
A. Its real-world applications. B. Explanations for the findings.
C. Its importance to dementia research. D. Recommendations for future studies.
34. What is Rafnsson's attitude toward seniors' increased reliance on online interaction
A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Cautious. D. Surprised.
35. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To encourage seniors to improve their digital skills.
B. To argue for the benefits of online social interaction.
C. To share a study on seniors' virtual interaction and dementia.
D. To describe the connections between dementia and technology.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was four weeks before New Year, and our youth group wanted to do something together as a New Year project for our
community. The concept was great, but none of us seventeen-year-olds had any idea what to do.
“Maybe we could have a food drive to help the homeless,” John suggested at our Sunday night meeting, “But we have
done that many times,” answered Brian with a frown.
Ten minutes passed without any proposal good enough to win our hearts. Finally, I decided to speak. “Why don't we think
about our project for a few days and then come back with three or four suggestions we can vote on ” Everyone agreed to wait a
week before deciding.
I knew time was running out to get something going before New Year, but I had no clue what we should do. During the
following week. one idea after another ran through my mind, but I was still indecisive.
Thursday after school, I wandered into the kitchen as my dad prepared for dinner. Sensing my uneasiness, he asked what
troubled me without even looking up. “Well... it...” I let out a long breath. “Our youth group wants to do something for New
Year, but we don't know what to do...”
“Hmm.” Mv dad thought out loud. “There's a seniors’ home I've worked with close to St. Joseph’s
Hospital. The residents don’t get out much around New Year with the snow and ice. It might be an idea to take them out to
see the New Year lights around here.”
I stood still for a few moments thinking of all the spectacular (绚丽的) New Year light displays in our neighborhood. To be
honest, I never thought about that, but it might just work.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Next Sunday evening, our youth group met.
On New Year’s Day, the bus we rented arrived at the seniors’ home in the snow.

Next Sunday evening, our youth group met. My fellows put forward several suggestions and I also contributed Dad’s
idea for discussion. To my pleasant surprise, the New Year lights tour won their hearts. We called the seniors’ home and they
were thrilled about our proposal. The following weeks, we were busy lining up everything for the tour, including the bus to
drive the seniors along the planned route.
On New Year’s Day, the bus we rented arrived at the seniors’ home in the snow. Despite the cold, the snow added a
magical white blanket to the neighborhood. All residents slowly found seats on the bus and the tour began. The spectacular light
displays lit up their faces and I even saw some eyes filling up. Returning to the seniors’ home, they couldn’t stop talking about
all they’d seen and thanked us again and again. Looking at their excited and grateful faces, we’d never felt warmer.

British scientists say they have uncovered a secret
of Stonehenge, the world-famous stone monument in Wiltshire, England.
The scientists reported that they have identified where many of Stonehenge’s large stones,
called megaliths, came from. Thousands of years ago, people used such stones to build markers, monuments and othe
r
structures. The researchers said part of one megalith helped uncover the secret. The small piece had been kept in the
United States for over 40 years.
Chemical testing suggests that most of Stonehenge’s megaliths came from an area called West Woods. It is abou
t 25 kilometers away from the ancient monument. David Nash, who led the study, said that
researchers still do not know how people moved the stones to Stonehenge. But he hopes the finding will help people
better understand the hard work that went into building it.
