Project
I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. decide on a proper festival and research it;
2. design PPT slides about a festival;
3. cooperate with group members effectively.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Set the goal of this class
T: The school English club will have a competition of making PPT slides about a festival. So in this class we’ll learn how to make PPT slides about a festival.

2. Have a free talk
T presents some pictures and asks Ss to talk about some festivals around the world (Rio Carnival, La Tomatina and the Spring Festival). Ss can also talk about other festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Thanks-giving Day.
【设计意图:让学生回顾前面所学内容,激发学生已知,同时鼓励学生不拘泥书本,拓展思维。】
Step 2 Researching a festival
T asks Ss to divide themselves into groups.
1. Choosing a festival to research
(1) T encourages Ss to think about the following questions and have a discussion.
What is your favourite festival or what festival do you want to know about most
Is it easy for you to find some related pictures, videos, description in literature or related history
(2) T leads Ss to get the following ideas.
You can choose the festival you like best or you want to know about most.
You can choose the festival about which you can easily find some related pictures, videos, description in literature or related history.

2. Deciding on the possible aspects to research the chosen festival
(1) T guides Ss to think about in what aspects they can research the chosen festival.
(2) T presents a mind map to help Ss to find the possible aspects.
【设计意图:学生充分发挥主观能动性,在教师的引导下先自己思考可以从哪些方面来研究所选定的节日,这培养了学生发散思维的能力,同时提高了学生的参与度。而后教师结合学生的回答展示思维导图,可以让学生更直观明了地知晓研究节日的方向。】
3. Discussing how to get relevant and reliable information
(1) T asks Ss to work in groups to write down some information that they have known about the chosen festival, with the help of the mind map.
(2) T asks Ss the question: where can you find other relevant information you need
T asks Ss to think of ways of getting relevant information and classify the ways into two categories: go to the library and search online.
(3) T asks Ss the question: how can we decide whether the information we find is reliable or not
After Ss give their opinions, the teacher gives two examples:
① The introduction about the Lantern Festival: the first is from a blog, while the second one is from the official website of China Daily.
② The description in literature about the Lantern Festival: one translation is by Xu Yuanchong, while the other one is by a poem lover.
T leads Ss to the following conclusion: the information from authoritative websites/publications or professionals is more reliable.
【设计意图:教师首先充分调动小组成员的积极性并激发小组成员的已知,然后引导他们思考该如何去获取相关信息,并举例提醒学生要注意信息的准确性和可靠性,这为之后展开研究做好充分准备。】
Step 3 Learning to make PPT slides
T asks Ss to think about how to design PPT slides.
1. T asks Ss to read the example in part C of the textbook and find out the basic features of the PPT slides, and asks several groups to give their opinions.
2. T leads students to summarize the basic features of the PPT slides:
The language is clear and concise, and stresses the key points logically.
The pictures are clear and match the contents properly.
The layout is neat and beautiful, and the overall style is consistent.
3. T asks Ss to think about this question: what should we pay attention to when designing PPT slides Then T gives Ss some tips:
Arrange the contents logically.
Use key phrases to describe some aspects such as activities.
Use related pictures or charts.
Use sound effects and videos where necessary.
Leave a blank area on the margin of the PPT slide.
Highlight the most important content and avoid putting too much information on one slide.
Use letters of proper sizes (usually at least 28) and proper colours (usually no more than three kinds).
Make sure the background colour and the style of all PPT slides are consistent.
【设计意图:充分发挥学生的主动性以及小组合作精神,让他们观察书本上有关元宵节的样板PPT并找出PPT的基本特点,然后在教师的引导下从三个角度——语言、插图和排版——来总结PPT的基本特点。紧接着通过教师的提问,让学生思考在设计PPT时应该注意什么。之后教师再顺理成章地给出一些提示,这样就为学生提供了实际性的指导,从而有利于教学目标的达成。需要说明的是,Project这堂课需要学生走出课堂,学以致用,迁移创新,所以本课要完成的步骤分成两个阶段,到Step 3为止属于第一阶段,这大概会占用一个课时。】
Step 4 Making PPT slides
1. Each student in a group chooses one aspect to collect relevant information.
2. As a group, Ss put together the information to make their PPT slides.
【设计意图:前面准备工作一切就绪,这一步学生真正走出课堂进行课后实践。学生组内分配好搜索相关信息的任务,然后通过小组合作把这些信息进行筛选、重组一起来制作PPT,这让每个学生真正参与进来,并且切实提高了他们的合作能力。】
Step 5 Presentation and evaluation
1. Students, as a group, present their PPT slides in front of the class and they can present the PPT in different ways.
The group leader plays the PPT slides, and the other group members say something about the chosen festival according to the PPT slides.
The group use the PPT slides to make a video clip in advance and then present it to the class.

Other students give points according to every team’s performance (10 points in total) from four aspects (language, pictures/videos/sound effects, layout and teamwork) and give suggestions so that the team can make some improvement on their PPT slides.

【设计意图:这是Project的第二阶段——在课堂上展示PPT,这大约需要半个课时(课下准备好, 课上展示)。通过小组展示和相互评价以及给出建议,提高学生的合作能力与批判性思维,从而更好地达成本堂课的教学目标。另外学生也能发现自己在某些方面,例如PPT排版方面的不足,以便获得提升,同时这也有助于学生表达能力、胆量、表现力和自信心的增强。】
V. Homework
1. Polish up your work according to some proper suggestions.
2. Send your PPT slides to the class WeChat group for others to learn and appreciate.
