While driving home after work, Jane Hodgson noticed a car pulled over at the side of the road and a crowd beginning to gather around someone who was lying on the ground.
Jane, who had completed a first aid at work course, pulled over to see if she could offer any help — and it turned out to be lucky for the young injured girl that she did.
Describing the scene she came across, Jane says: “The onlookers were ashen-faced and looking lost. They were so shocked that they hadn’t even thought to call for an ambulance yet.”
After speaking to the emergency services, Jane started finding out what had happened and what injuries the young girl called Jenny had. The girl had been hit by a car and gone over the handlebars of her bike, landing on her head and shoulder. Her shoulder and arm were twisted (扭曲) underneath her.
“She hadn’t been wearing a helmet (头盔) when she got knocked down, and I thought that she should not be moved as I couldn’t be sure about a spinal injury (脊椎损伤), but after looking her over and checking the circulation in her injured arm I did feel fairly confident that she had escaped relatively unhurt.
“As we were waiting for an ambulance, the amount of pain the girl was in was increasing. To distract (分散注意力) her and minimize the risk of her going into shock I kept her talking. She held my hand tightly when the pain got too much and this helped. I told her I could handle it — we laughed about that,” describes Jane.
Later, a doctor from the local hospital’s ICU stopped at the scene too. The ICU doctor decided that Jenny should lie on her back, making her much more comfortable until the emergency services arrived.
Thinking back, Jane says: “For me, knowing that in a small way I helped that girl through what was a frightening experience is all the reward I need. I felt great to know I’d made a difference and I’d do it again.”

The Roman Colosseum was built almost two thousand years ago. Despite its age and a 14th century earthquake that knocked down the south side, most of the 150-some foot building is still standing. Scientists and engineers have long suspected a key to the building’s durability (使用年限) is the use of a specific Roman concrete. But exactly how this solid concrete has contributed to the architecture’s strength has been a mystery to researchers across the globe.
A team of researchers recently discovered a potential answer to why these ancient Roman buildings have been able to weather the test of time while many modern concrete structures seem to fall apart after a few decades. The answer is self-healing concrete.
The material has three components: limestone (石灰石), volcanic material and water. What the researchers found was that the self-healing feature might be simply caused by chemistry accidentally. The limestone in the concrete is likely the secret.
When the ancient Romans made mortar (灰浆), they heated up the lime to turn it into a substance called “quicklime”. And, because they introduced water to the quicklime during mixing, the heat it produced set up a chemical foundation that could strengthen the concrete later. When tiny cracks start to form later, the quicklime stops them from becoming bigger. When it rains, the lime reacts with the water to recombine as various forms of calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), quickly filling the crack or reacting with the volcanic ash to “heal” the material.
For materials scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding of ancient Roman concrete is a welcome discovery. “This is one way that the material can be more environmentally friendly,” says Ramirez. “It’s sort of like a message in a bottle. The Romans made the material. We had to kind of figure out how they did it so that we can make better materials — and then, you know, in turn, be better protectors of our environment.”
8.What can we learn from Paragraph 1

B.The quicklime should be made on rainy days.
C.The chemical foundation could weaken the concrete.
D.Combining water and quicklime would produce heat.
11.What can be inferred from Ramirez’s words
A.People can be inspired to make greener materials.

Last summer, the story about a CEO who encouraged employees to take mental health days spread online. It led to many media stories about the importance of taking care of your mental health including taking a mental health day when you need one.
But what about kids Should you let your child take a mental health day from school The answer isn’t a simple yes or no. It’s important for kids to power through some discomfort, like going to school even when they’re afraid of giving a presentation, or when they don’t have their math homework done. There’s a lot of value in showing them that they’re stronger than they think. But when they’re feeling so bad that they’re struggling to function, and going to school is likely to make it worse, a mental health day might be just what the doctor ordered.
Letting kids take the occasional(偶尔的) mental health day-maybe once or twice a year-could make them believe that taking care of their minds is vital, just as they should take care of their bodies. It can also be a great opportunity to help them sharpen their emotional skills and build the mental muscles they need to stay strong.
A good way to spend a mental health day is to use the time to do the following things.
Solve a problem. If your child is stressed out by a specific problem, you might be able to turn a mental health day into a problem-solving opportunity.
Practice self-care. If your child is exhausted or overworked, an occasional day off may help him recuperate. It could be an opportunity to develop healthier habits, like going to sleep earlier, eating nutritious (有营养的)food, and getting plenty of exercise.
See a professional. If your child is struggling to attend school, seek professional help. Schedule an appointment with your pediatrician(儿科医生)to talk about your child’s mental health needs. A physician may refer you to a mental health professional if it’s necessary.
12.What did people do after reading the story about a CEO
A.They decided to take more days off work.
B.They realized mental health needs care too.
C.They decided to read some media stories about him.
D.They became worried about employees’ mental health.
13.Which of the following shows the author’s opinion
A.All children need a mental health day.
B.Kids need a mental health day less than adults.
C.Schools should arrange regular mental health days.
D.A mental health day is sometimes necessary for children.
14.What does the underlined word “recuperate” in Paragraph 6 mean
A.Recover. B.Think.
C.Sleep. D.Exercise
15.What would be the best title for the text
A.When do kids need mental health days
B.Why do people need mental health days
C.How can kids make use of mental health days
D.Should kids be allowed to take mental health days

第II卷 (主观题部分)
语法填空(每题1.5分,共10题,满分15分)
To Be Joyful, To Be Young
What really works to make sustainable changes in diet and lifestyle It’s probably not what you think. In the past 30 years of conducting clinical research, I 36 (learn) that real keys are pleasure, joy and freedom. Joy of living is sustainable; fear of dying is not.
Why Because life is to be enjoyed. There’s no point 37 (abandon) something you enjoy unless you get something back that’s even better, and quickly. When people eat more healthfully, 38 (quit) smoking, and manage stress better, they find they feel so much better, so quickly. It reconstructs the reason for making these changes from fear of dying to joy of living.
When you exercise and eat right, your brain receives more blood flow and oxygen, so you become smarter, have more energy, and need less sleep. Two studies showed just walking for three hours per week for only three months caused so many neurons(神经细胞) 39 (grow) that it actually increased the size of people’s brains!
Your face receives more blood flow, so your skin glows more and wrinkles less. You look younger and more attractive. In contrast, an unhealthy diet, lasting emotional stress and smoking reduce blood flow to your face 40 you age more quickly. Smoking speeds up aging because nicotine contributes to your blood vessel becoming narrower, 41 decreases blood flow to your face and makes it wrinkle prematurely. This is why smokers look years older than they really are.
One of the most interesting findings was that the mothers’ awareness of stress was more important than 42 was objectively occurring in their lives. 43 (give) a questionnaire, the women were asked to rate on a three-point scale how stressed they felt each day. The women who realized they were under heavy stress had significantly shortened and damaged telomeres(染色体端粒) compared with 44 who felt more relaxed. Contrarily, some of the women who felt relaxed 45 raising a disabled child had more normal-appearing telomeres.
In other words, if you feel stressed, you are stressed.

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars ” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the boy would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to buy roses,” he said. “My mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because those are her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Tom was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Tom had been blessed (幸运的) in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the boy and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out of the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them delivered (递送) to his mother. After that, with relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地).
