You may have recently seen a video from the Beijing Wildlife Zoo becoming a hit. What exactly was so interesting about this video It shows a dog playing with big cats four to five times its size! Many people might wonder if this dog has a death wish, but it seems that the dog and the big cats are good friends.
The dog was actually raised alongside the lion and tiger cubs, making up an odd but loving family, according to zoo officials. As opposed to the common belief, cross-species friendship has been around for centuries. People have domesticated many animals, most notably cats and dogs, and formed bonds with them as pets. Perhaps you even have a pet yourself.
There are many other instances of cross-species friendships.
At an animal sanctuary in Santiago, Chile, a jaguar named Marina and a deer named Laura formed a friendship after they both came to the park. As neither animal had a mother, sanctuary staff said they instantly bonded when they met. Laura had been rescued from a slaughterhouse while Marina had been rescued from the street.
One possible explanation for these friendships is the environment of the zoo. Animals don’t hunt for their food and don’t need to worry about marking their territory or looking for mates in the way an animal in the wild would. “All those activities take time and energy, and if these needs are removed, the animals get bored,” Gordon Burghardt, a psychologist at the University of Tenessee, US, told The Atlantic magazine. “In this particular situation, the animal’s motivation to engage socially and playfully may be higher in its need hierarchy(等级)than eating.”
Marc Bekoff, former biology professor at the University of Colorado, US, told Slate magazine, “I think the choices animals make in cross-species relationships are the same as they’d make in same-species relationships. Some dogs don’t like every other dog. Animals are very selective about the other individuals who they let into their lives.”
1.What is the common opinion about the friendship between animals
A.It’s easier for dogs and cats to become friends.
B.Animals tend to play with peers of the same species.
C.The friendship between animals is not solid and reliable.
D.It’s common that animals of different species can become friends.
2.Why are Marina and Laura mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To present a truth. B.To explain a phenomenon.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To provide a proof.
3.What’s the key factor of the animals’ friendship in the zoo according to Gordon Burghardt
A.The existing tradition. B.The influence by mates.
C.The animals’ inner social drive. D.The animals’ raisers’ instruction.
4.What’s the purpose of the passage
A.To appeal to people to treasure animals.
B.To inform readers of a special friendship.
C.To demonstrate the history of bringing up pets.
D.To compare friendship between cross-species and same-species.
I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself”were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable (好客的) and friendly — but only once they had been introduced to new people.
However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.
I experienced Italian hospitality first-hand on a crowded railway carriage traveling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence. Sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was berated (斥责) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat — it had not been “spare” after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the rest of the journey. The other passengers of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.
Transport was also obvious in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to disturb someone else’s privacy. However, when I traveled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.
5.What do we know about the passengers of the carriage when the author was travelling in Italy
A.They were all on the side of the gentleman.
B.They all laughed at the author for this mistake .
C.They all showed their understanding of the author’s mistake.
D.They would not bear a mistake like the author’s in public.
6.According to the last paragraph, English passengers sat in near silence because_______.
A.they were too tired to speak
B.they were all strangers to each other
C.everybody had their own share of privacy
D.privacy was a valued tradition in England
7.The purpose of the author is to tell us ________.
A.his traveling experience
B.how to adapt ourselves to a new culture
C.the culture shock he experienced in Italy and the US
D.cultural differences in hospitality and politeness
Shark nets in place across Australia, specifically in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, to protect beachgoers(海滩游客)should be dropped as they have caused more harm than good, a study has found.
The measures were carried out by some’ governments, including nets and traditional drum lines, and provided beachgoers with a false sense of safety. The study found the effectiveness of nets was difficult to evaluate(评估), while the significant damage they cause to other marine wildlife was clear. Researches desire for non-deadly shark control measures such as eco barriers, which physically separate swimmers from sharks, sonar(声纳)technology, and various shark-spotting techniques.
Researchers said while the risk of coming across a shark was rare, any shark-related deaths and injuries caught huge public and media attention.
One of the arguments in support of using shark nets is that just one shark-related death has been reported in Queensland since the 1960s. Similarly, since the 1930s, NSW has had only one shark-related death. But there have been at least 13 people killed by sharks at beaches without nets on the NSW north coast over the past two years.
The Humane Society International’s head of campaigns, Nicola Beynon, said the government needed to move away from outdated methods. “Deadly shark nets and drum lines are more than 50 years behind scientific and animal welfare standards for dealing with marine wildlife,” said Beynon.
The NSW Greens’ marine spokesman, Justin Field, said, “People are 100 times more likely to drown at the beach than to be kill by a shark in Australia. Therefore, millions of dollars going into the shark net program should be directed to observation towers for our lifeguards and improving the beach devices.”
8.Which of the following do researchers focus on
A.Beachgoers’ safety.
B.The effectiveness of shark nets.
C.Friendly shark control measures.
D.Advanced shark-spotting techniques.
9.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Shark-related deaths.
B.Dangers for beachgoers.
C.Measures to protect sharks.
D.Reasons of using shark nets.
10.What do Nicola Beynon and Justin Field have in common
A.Science is developing too fast.
B.No shark nets are to be used.
C.Observation towers need rebuilding.
D.Many people are drown every year.
11.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Are Sharks Nets Necessary
B.A New Study on Sharks
C.Shark Net Programs
D.Effective Ways of Avoiding Sharks
Scandinavian architecture is a relatively new construct that drew public attention within the last century. It tends to include works associated with Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, and it is undoubtedly one of the more influential styles in modern times.
The Scandinavian design style is both simple and comfortable, modern and historic. Home builders influenced by this style are expert at mixing traditional vernacular (民间风俗的) styles with modern technology to create a space that is beautiful and aims to make your life better.
Before the early 20th century, much of Scandinavian architecture was vernacular in nature. Homes were built in a simple way using locally sourced materials and knowledge. However, it can be argued that this lack of formal architectural schooling promoted more craftsmanship and creativity as time went on. These vernacular builders were more concerned with function than form. An early example of this is the turf houses in Iceland, which were homes with green roofs that could keep the house in comfortable temperature throughout seasons in an affordable way.
The modern-day version of Scandinavian architecture grew out of this grassroots approach to building. Public buildings originally mixed Neoclassical elements with traditional building styles based on local practices. In the 1930s, the concept of Functionalism was introduced in Scandinavia. With its inspiration, architects wanted the buildings to be simple, but they also wanted them to be beneficial to people in some thoughtful way. For instance, the Paimio Sanatorium that was built in 1933 focused on maximizing quality air and light for tuberculosis (结核病) patients. So while modern architecture is all about simple, clean lines, Scandinavian architecture is that and also a style of building that thinks about how public spaces and homes can be valuable to humankind.
12.What is a feature of Scandinavian architecture before the early 20th century
A.Practical function. B.Professional design.
C.Creative appearance. D.Recyclable material.
13.What can we learn about the modern Scandinavian architecture
A.Modern technology is the biggest advantage of it.
B.Architects of this style focus on both simplicity and comfort.
C.The concept of Functionalism was rejected by Scandinavian architects.
D.Its appearance is different from that of other styles of modern architecture.
14.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A.To attract tourists to visit Scandinavia.
B.To show respect to Scandinavian architects.
C.To introduce an architecture style from Europe.
D.To encourage more people to major in architecture.
15.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Entertainment. B.Society.
C.Education. D.Culture.

根据文章倒数第二段Gordon Burghardt的话“In this particular situation, the animal’s motivation to engage socially and playfully may be higher in its need hierarchy than eating.”(在这种特殊的情况下,动物参与社交和玩耍的动机可能比进食的需求层次更高。)及本段关键句“One possible explanation for these friendships is the environment of the zoo. Animals don’t hunt for their food and don’t need to worry about marking their territory or looking for mates in the way an animal in the wild would.”(对这些友谊的一个可能的解释是动物园的环境。

根据第四段“One of the arguments in support of using shark nets is that just one shark-related death has been reported in Queensland since the 1960s. Similarly, since the 1930s, NSW has had only one shark-related death. But there have been at least 13 people killed by sharks at beaches without nets on the NSW north coast over the past two years.(支持使用防鲨网的论据之一是,自上世纪60年代以来,昆士兰州只有一例与鲨鱼有关的死亡报告。同样,自20世纪30年代以来,新南威尔士州只发生过一起与鲨鱼有关的死亡事件。但是在过去的两年里,至少有13人在新南威尔士北海岸没有渔网的海滩上被鲨鱼咬死。)”可知,本段通过列举了与鲨鱼有关的死亡人数来支持使用防鲨网这一论据,由此可知,本段主要介绍的是支持海滩设防鲨网的理由。故选D。
3.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中““Deadly shark nets and drum lines are more than 50 years behind scientific and animal welfare standards for dealing with marine wildlife,” said Beynon.(Beynon说,“在处理海洋野生动物方面,致命的鲨鱼网和鼓线比科学和动物福利标准落后了50多年”。)”和最后一段“The NSW Greens’ marine spokesman, Justin Field, said, “...Therefore, millions of dollars going into the shark net program should be directed to observation towers for our lifeguards and improving the beach devices.”(新南威尔士绿色运动的海事发言人Justin Field说:“……因此,数百万美元用于防鲨网计划的资金应该直接用于救生员的观察塔,以及改善海滩设施。”)”可知,Nicola认为防鲨网是一种过时的方法,Field认为防鲨网的费用可用来建瞭望塔。由此可知,他两人的共同之处是不建议再使用防鲨网。故选B。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Shark nets in place across Australia, specifically in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, to protect beachgoers(海滩游客)should be dropped as they have caused more harm than good, a study has found.(一项研究发现,澳大利亚各地,特别是新南威尔士州和昆士兰州,为保护海滩游客而设置的防鲨网应该被丢弃,因为它们造成的伤害大于好处。)” 故选A。
