To get the main idea and the implied meaning of the fable “The Stone In the Road”. 2. To know the structure of a review and write a review of the fable. 3. To get inspired by the virtue of the characters in the story and have a better understanding of morality. (Brainstorming) 4 mins Teacher:ok, class, I have a question for you here, do you know what a fable is Student 1:a easy story ... ... Student 2: a short story ... ... Student 3: we can learn a lesson from the fable. Teacher: Yes. A fable is a traditional short story that teaches a moral lesson, especially one with animals as characters. For example, The Tortoise and the Hare is a famous fable whose moral is “Slow and steady wins the race.” Teacher: I believe you must have learned some fables, so have you read these fables “The Farmer and the Snake” “Wolf Is Coming” “Better Late Than Never” “Crow Drink Water” “The Moon in the Well” “The Tortoise and The Hare” Students: they can easily translate the fables into Chinese. Teacher: makes an enhancement of Aesop’s Fables: It was written by Aesop, a slave in ancient Greece. He was born dumb, and when his mother died, he had nowhere to go but to wander everywhere. During his trip, he heard many stories about animals. One day he dreamed that God put his finger on his tongue. When he woke up, he could speak! So he told all kinds of stories to his companions. Then a monk wrote down Aesop's stories. That is how the Aesop's Fables came out. Goal: Lead students to know more information about fables and Aesop’s Fables, which could make them interested in learning about the reading passage. 15 mins Step 1: Fast-reading Teacher: read the passage fast, and then answer these three questions: What was the king’s idea for teaching an important lesson to his people What was the response from most of the people What did the young girl think and do when she saw the coins Students: Read the passage quickly and then catch the key information to find the answer to these three questions. Teacher: checks answers with the students. He put a huge stone in the middle of a street, and watched to see if anyone would move it. They just became angry or upset because the stone was in their way. She thought that the money belonged to someone else and that it should be returned. Step 2: Careful-reading Teacher: complete the table according to the story. Students:read the passage carefully, and try to find the information from the text, then fill in the blanks. Step 3: Post-reading Pair-work Teacher:work in pairs and discuss the two questions. What do you think this fable is trying to tell us Was the king wise Why or why not Can you list similar things in your life when you felt and acted like the girl or like the other people in the story Students: work in pairs, discuss students own opinions of these two questions, and then show their opinions. Group work 20 mins Step 1: Tips: write a review. Teacher: Introduce a tip for writing a review: The main purpose of the review is to give you opinion about a piece of writing. You should first give a short description of the writing and then clearly state your opinion and your reasons. Students: learn about the tip carefully, and then know about how to write a review. Step 2: Write a review of the fable. Use the outline below to help you. Teacher: we can learn the outline of writing a review before the writing. Students: Learn about the outline and the details of each paragraph. Step 3: One possible version. Teacher: shows one possible version for students to learn. Students:Learn about the version, understand how to write a review of a fable. The fable is an old fable about a king who thought his people are lazy, so he put a large stone in the middle of the road and hides and waited to see if anyone will try to move it. The author used this story to impress upon readers with the need to take personal responsibility for problems in the community. The story was quite successful in achieving its purpose, and I liked it because it had a clear moral. However, while the moral of the story is clear, the actions of the king seemed pointless to me, because none of the characters in the story learnt anything. For this reason, I think there are better stories that can be used to impress upon people with the need for personal responsibility. Step 4: Teacher: shows three small videos about the Aesop’s fables. Students: choose one fable and then try to write a review on one fable. Students: show time. Make a summary of this class and make brief comments of the students’performance. Finish writing the review.
