Every time I stare at the rows of jars filled with my parents’ homemade tomato sauce, I wonder: “Should I really use one ”
I have been keeping these jars like precious treasures. No matter how hard I try to find alternatives, nothing compares. Store bought sauce It doesn’t taste right. Even if I try to recreate it, it will never taste the same.
While growing up, I hated the tomato season. My parents would use the basement to ripen the tomatoes they had collected locally in September. Like the other Italian families in the area, we would then take them to the garage when they were ripe enough. There they were cleaned and boiled.
Having been stewed (炖), whole tomatoes were passed through my father’s homemade machine to. Separate the sauce from the skins. Jars at the ready. We filled them with sauce and seasoning. The jars would be hot for a few days, sealed (密封) to keep their own heat. They would then be lined up and ready to use.
This tradition was hard to carry on when my father got ill. After being diagnosed (诊断) with cancer in 2019, he spent most of his time in hospital. In September that year he came home, and on the weekend we decided to continue the tradition. I have glorious memories of that day as we once again made the sauce. It was a beautiful but short-lived moment. My father died soon after.
I can’t keep these jars forever. But it doesn’t make it any easier to open one. Every time I go to reach for one, something stops me. My mother, ever practical, is visiting us recently and just stares at them.
“You should use these or they will go to waste.”
What will it feel like to use that last jar It would mean the end of an era. Who knows Maybe it’s time to bring new traditions into life.

Every year, millions of teenagers in the USA participate in team sports. Gallup research shows that over 50 percent of teenagers are on a school sports team. But, what about the remaining 50 percent Certainly, plenty of those teenagers are happily involved in other extra-curricular activities. After all, not everyone prefers sports.
Still, there’s a sad story here, too. A significant number of teenagers once enjoyed sports, but no longer participate. They say it’s just not worth it. Why do promising athletes walk away from school sports, and what should you do if your athlete decides he or she no longer wants to play team sports
Take Madeline, for example. When she was living with her family in Texas a few years ago, Madeline joined her middle school’s track team. She was new to the sport, but she was fast. She worked hard and won medals. Then one day, Madeline fell while taking a hurdle. She cracked a bone in her wrist. Her track season was over.
Her coaches were upset, but probably not in the way you’d expect. Rather than comforting (安慰) their promising athlete suffering from a disappointing sports injury or encouraging her to return next season, they turned their back on her. “They shunned me for the rest of the year,” recalls Madeline, who has since moved to the East Coast. “I guess because I would no longer be winning them any medals.”
“Sports lost their attraction to me,” says Madeline, adding that her coaches also verbally abused (辱骂) the team at practices. “I did end up trying out for the track team last year, but I actually found myself filled with memories and emotions from my experience the previous year and ended up dropping out. That’s the biggest regret in life.”
Talk to coaches, parents and teenagers about the problems of sports, and you’ll hear the same answer: by middle school and certainly by high school, it has, more often than not, become a game of medals. Not the plain old fun of playing. Not the benefits that sports offer. But winning period.
28. What is the real concern of the author
A. The general state of teenagers’ participation in sports.
B. The reasons for hopeful teenage athletes’ quitting sports.
C. The major benefits that school team sports offer to teenagers.
D. The relation between emotional support and sports involvement.
29. The underlined word “shunned” in paragraph 4 can be replaced by “ ”.
A. took control of B. got responsible for
C. kept away from D. showed concern for
30. What does Madeline regret about greatly
A. She lost interest in the once-favorable sport.
B. She failed to win medals in the team sports.
C. The coach’s verbal abuse hurt her emotionally.
D. The serious injury reduced her confidence in sports.
31. What does the author think about sports
A. Hard training may take fun off sports.
B. It is related too much to coaches’support.
C. It has totally become an industry for profits.
D. People focus too much attention on winning.

A rare wild flower is being re-established in Devon fields thanks to some four-legged helpers. A conservation charity called Planflife has employed donkeys as “ecosystem engineers”to encourage the return of the endangered small-flowered catchfly.
The catchfly was once found all across Britain but now it only grows in small areas of Wales and the south and west of England. Experts blame its decline on modern farming practices. The flower flourished around the edges of sandy fields where farmers grew their crops, but because of weedkillers that were used to remove “unwanted” plants, and fertilisers to boost crop yields, its habitat has largely disappeared.
Plantlife teamed up with the Donkey Sanctuary, a charity that looks after donkeys in the UK and around the world. It owns several farms across Devon and the UK, where it takes care of hundreds of rescued donkeys, as well as maintaining habitats for other wildlife. More than 20, 000 seeds have been scattered on fields at the sanctuary’s main Devon farm, and it is hoped that many will grow into plants this summer. They will provide food for threatened bird species such as linnets, yellowhammers and skylarks. Plantlife then aims to get the donkeys themselves involved, testing whether catchfly seeds benefit from being trampled into the ground as the donkeys take their exercise. Many plants have seeds that must be pressed into the soil in order to germinate.
“We’re incredibly grateful to partners like the Donkey Sanctuary who are helping these fantastically rare wild flowers come back from the edge of extinction,” Cath Shellswell of Plantlife told The Guardian newspaper. “We look forward to seeing small-flowered catchfly return and we are working with the sanctuary to ensure that this tiny plant has a thriving future. ”
32. Why are donkeys employed in Devon fields
A. To work in the fields. B. To restore the catchfly.
C. To avoid extinction. D. To raise crop yields.
33. What caused the decline of the catchfly’s population
A. Soil loss. B. Water pollution.
C. Climate change. D. Modern agriculture.
34. How do donkeys help the catchfly come back
A. By pressing its seeds into the soil. B. By working the land.
C. By providing nutrition for it. D. By spreading its seeds.
35. What is the best title of the passage
A. Donkeys help fields flower again. B. Farmland becomes a natural habitat.
C. The biodiversity forms on Devon farms. D. The catchfly has a thriving future.

My husband and I recently made a cross-country move to Florida with our young child Dave. It was a quiet street with few people living there. Our neighbor was an old couple, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith, both over seventy years old and energetic. They were kind enough to help us clean our house and yard, for our new home was in a mess.
Weeks before Thanksgiving arrived, my anxiety about it increased. “We should start thinking about plans for Thanksgiving dinner,” I suggested. “Don’t worry about it,” my husband said, “Heat up some hot dogs, maybe some cheese, and the kid will be happy.” That sounded great. I was in relief!
In the past holidays, I had never been responsible for cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner. My job was always to bring drinks or a side dish and help clean up after the meal. But one day my son Dave happily showed his newly-created turkey crafts. “Let’s go on a walk and try to find a rock that looks like turkey!” Dave shouted to me, “Take me on a walk, Mommy!” The excitement was building, and I had a feeling that hot dogs were not going to be enough for my child on Thanksgiving.
“I’m going to try and prepare Thanksgiving food Leonard,” I said to my husband late one night. He eyed me incredibly. “Are you sure ” Then he said, “Okay, then, if you think you can do it.”
I went to the grocery store early Thanksgiving morning. Unfortunately, only a huge turkey remained, so I had no choice but to buy a thirty-pound turkey. I dragged (拖拽) the bagged turkey home. When my family saw it, they got a big surprise at its size. Seeing the surprise on their faces, I realized there was no way we could finish the turkey. It’s too big for my family. “There was only one turkey left in the store.” I explained. “But how could we finish the turkey ” I asked my husband and Dave. Dave said we could invite our neighbor, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, to share with us. It seemed a good idea.

由第二段首句“I have been keeping these jars like precious treasures. (我一直把这些罐子当宝贝一样珍藏着)”可知,作者非常珍惜父母手工制作的番茄酱;再结合第二段下文“No matter how hard I try to find alternatives, nothing compares. Store bought sauce It doesn’t taste right. Even if I try to recreate it, it will never taste the same. (无论我如何努力寻找替代品,都无法与之相比。商店买的酱?味道不对。即使我试着重新做,味道也不一样了)”可知,父亲的离世让作者再也找不到这种有家的味道的番茄酱,由此推知作者一直舍不得使用的原因是他十分珍视这些番茄酱。故答案为D。
【25题详解】
主旨大意题。由第三段第一句“While growing up, I hated the tomato season. (在成长过程中,我讨厌番茄季节)”可知,作者接下来要写的是成长中有关制作番茄酱的回忆,随后第四段“Having been stewed (炖), whole tomatoes were passed through my father’s homemade machine to.
A Hard training may take fun off sports.
B. It is related too much to coaches’support.
C. It has totally become an industry for profits.
D. People focus too much attention on winning.
B 29. C 30. A 31. D

根据第二段“Still, there’s a sad story here, too. A significant number of teenagers once enjoyed sports, but no longer participate. They say it’s just not worth it. Why do promising athletes walk away from school sports, and what should you do if your athlete decides he or she no longer wants to play team sports (不过,这里也有一个悲伤的故事。相当多的青少年曾经喜欢运动,但现在不再参加了。他们说这不值得。为什么有前途的运动员会放弃学校的体育运动 如果你的运动员决定不再参加团队运动,你该怎么办 )”可知作者关心的是有希望的青少年运动员放弃运动的原因。故选B。
【29题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词上文“Her coaches were upset, but probably not in the way you’d expect. Rather than comforting (安慰) their promising athlete suffering from a disappointing sports injury or encouraging her to return next season, they turned their back on her.( 她的教练们很沮丧,但可能不是你想象中的那种。他们没有安慰那些正遭受令人失望的运动伤病的有前途的运动员,也没有鼓励她下赛季复出,而是背弃了她。)”由此推出下句意思是“他们在那一年剩下的时间里都躲着我”,故shunned意为“回避,远离”,故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段““Sports lost their attraction to me,” says Madeline, adding that her coaches also verbally abused (辱骂) the team at practices. “I did end up trying out for the track team last year, but I actually found myself filled with memories and emotions from my experience the previous year and ended up dropping out. That’s the biggest regret in life. (马德琳说:“体育对我失去了吸引力。”她补充说,她的教练在训练时还会辱骂队员。“去年我确实参加了田径队的选拔,但实际上我发现自己对前一年的经历充满了回忆和情感,最终退出了。这是人生最大的遗憾。”)”可知玛德琳最后悔的是她对这项曾经很受欢迎的运动失去了兴趣。故选A。
根据最后一段“Talk to coaches, parents and teenagers about the problems of sports, and you’ll hear the same answer: by middle school and certainly by high school, it has, more often than not, become a game of medals. Not the plain old fun of playing. Not the benefits that sports offer. But winning period.( 和教练、家长和青少年谈论体育运动的问题,你会听到同样的答案:到了中学,当然到了高中,它往往变成了一场奖牌游戏。而不是玩的普通乐趣。而不是体育运动所提供的好处。只有获胜的时期。)”可推测作者认为人们过于关注胜利。故选D。

B 33. D 34. A 35. D

“I’m going to try and prepare Thanksgiving food, Leonard,” I said to my husband late one night.
