Workcations: The travel trend mixing work and play
“After working from home for over a year, I needed a change in atmosphere,” says Vedika Bhaia, a Kolkata-based marketing entrepreneur and content creator. Last summer, she and a friend went on a 15-day trip through India’s Parvati Valley, ____41____ the natural environment while balancing a full workload on a laptop.
Though she was used to working ____42____ , Bhaia says the ‘work-from-anywhere’ mentality (思维模式)created by the pandemic pushed her to take a trip that combined work and leisure. “I knew travelling would do ____43____ for my mental health. It would help me ____44____ the creative block I was having as well,” she says.
The popularity of workcations may seem to conflict with the firmly ____45____ idea that we should keep work and play apart – after all, better awareness of work-related mental health stressors has left us more conscious than ever of the importance of ____46____ boundaries between our professional and personal lives. Yet experts argue that the adaptability we’ve developed during the pandemic has ____47____ us well to enjoy a break that combines work and play. And given the benefits workers see in them – like more chances to explore new places while fulfilling our day-to-day responsibilities – workcations are likely to become a practice lasting well beyond the pandemic.
Of course there may well be some people who prefer to commit fully to either work or play, rather than combine the two activities. Rachel Fu, professor of tourism, says that whether people enjoy the workcation experience will depend on “a variety of individual personalities and behavioural choices”; some may feel they are only on holiday if they are totally free from work, for example. But Fu suspects that many white-collar workers have ____48____ the skills needed to pull off workcations during the pandemic. “Our behaviours have been forced to change,” she says. “Home is school, home is where we work. We have all been trained to switch: ‘OK, now we have a Zoom meeting’. I think after the past two years, we can switch from one thing to the next very ____49____ . ”
Given the level of interest from workers now accustomed to staying productive in multiple environments, workcations look like a practice that’s here to stay. “As long as you deliver, many companies don’t care where you’re working from,” says Fu. Accommodating workers will be in companies’ interests; it’s already clear that ____50____ will be key to keeping workers, especially as the new generation of workers, in particular, value the ability to work from anywhere.

“We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu (712 — 770). These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged,”said Harvard professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu, China’s Greatest Poet, a BBC documentary.
Despite the fact that Du Fu is usually mentioned in the same breath as Dante and Shakespeare, he has remained largely unknown in the Western world for long. However, with the screening of the first English-language documentary feature about the poet, the days of Du Fu as China’s best-kept literary secret seem to be just numbered.
It is written and presented by Michael Wood, a skilled television historian who also directed other China-related documentaries such as The Story of China (2016) and The Story of China’s Reform and Opening Up(2018).
From the Yellow River to the Yangtze Gorges, and down to the forested hills of Hunan province, Wood visited a number of places such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi in Henan province and Tang Dynasty capital Chang’an, today’s Xi’an. Along the way, he met and talked to ordinary people, dancers and musicians, who helped to tell the fantastic story of the poet. Interviews with famous scholars specializing in Chinese literature also helped present a clearer picture of the poet’s life experiences, literary significance and his friendship with Li Bai, another great Chinese poet.
Born in 712, Du Fu lived in the Tang Dynasty, a time marked by extraordinary cultural achievements. However, after a civil unrest, Du Fu, the former civil servant at the Tang court, was forced to be come a porter, and suffered from starvation. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his-country and people as well as celebrating the simple joys of life.
Du’s poetry reflects the country’s historical events mirrored in his own spiritual journey, so he becomes a part of the emotional vocabulary of Chinese culture, said Stephen Owen, who in 2016 completed the eight-year-long project to translate DuFu’s 1,400 poems into English.

Australians have long been known for having a relaxed and casual attitude to life. According to Dr. Tanya King, senior lecturer from Victoria's Deakin University. "It's Australians' egalitarianism ,sense of humor and informal language that are most commonly mentioned as examples of this attitude. "
Egalitarianism roots in the way that the nation was built. In Australia's founding car in the late 1700s, criminal settlers were often cruelly treated and robbed of their basic human rights by governors. The criminal class. who were mostly working-class Brits and Irish. was unable to seek civic positions that were reserved for immigrants w ho were not the criminal, with the latter arguing that if criminals gained equal rights it would be "rewarding criminality ". Because of this, an egalitarian spirit was worn as a symbol of honor by many criminal settlers. They may not have had power, education or wealth. but they had a shared belief in equality.
The informal way Australians use language is also believed to root in criminal times. Philologist Sidney Baker once wrote that "no other class would have a better talent for creating new terms to fit in with their new conditions in life. " Cockney rhyming slang brought over by the British working class was abbreviated even further - so " have a Captains Cook"(have a look). became "ava captains". This same practice was used to economize ordinary clauses. Words like "good day" became "g' day". and barbecue was "barbie".
The tough conditions of settler times also played a part in Australians' dry self-criticizing and sarcastic(讽刺的) sense of humor. While in many countries it's considered poor taste to find humor in difficult circumstances. Australians lend to look at the lighter side. On one road trip, as I hit the stale line and entered Victoria. I drove past some blackened trees, the leftovers of a recent bush-fire. A road sign warning drivers about wildlife was half-melted and bent, but the shape of a hopping kangaroo was still distinct. Behind the figure, someone had drawn flames making it look as though the animal's tail was on fire. I couldn't help but laugh - it was a brilliant reminder of the country's "nothing upsets us" and anti-authoritarian attitude.
And one thing you can't help but notice when driving around Australia is the country's plentiful amounts of space. This. along with considerable leisure time plus favorable climate, all contributes to Australian's relaxed attitude.
73. The underlined word "egalitarianism" is closest to ______ in meaning.
A. criminality B. cruelty C. equality D. governmentalism
74. Which of the following is feature of the way Australians use language
A. They use more slangs than other people.
B. They give new meaning to existent words.
C. They favor shortened forms of expressions.
D They coin terms in memory of criminal times.
75. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Kangaroos' living conditions are getting tougher.
B. Forest fires threatened Australian's life to a great extent.
C. Potential danger is here and there on the roads in Victoria.
D. Australians' jokes may not be as careless as they seem on the surface.
76. The passage mainly talks about ______.
A. how the late 1700s impacted Australia
B. why Australians enjoy casual life so much
C. what contributes to Australians' relaxed lifestyle
D. how Australians present their attitude towards life
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Dining in China: Culture Shock
Before coming to China, I thought of Chinese food as General Tso’s chicken, egg rolls, and fortune cookies. ____77____ In my first few weeks here, the group I was working with went out to dozens of group dinners. We were introduced to the Chinese way of dining out, and there was quite a bit of culture shock involved.
For one, the community style of dining was new to me. In America, I was used to sharing an appetizer with someone sometimes and then everyone ordering their own main course. In China, many dishes are ordered and placed on a lazy Susan. The table is spun around and you grab what you like. And we’re not just talking a starter, a main, and dessert here; a Chinese dinner is a marathon of food. ____78____ of course, there are always some staple foods around-rice, dumplings, or noodles. Soup comes last in a Chinese dinner instead of first, and dessert usually consists of a massive fruit plate.
Using chopsticks was also new to me and took quite some time to get used to. It was always embarrassing at first when I couldn’t grab something tasty from the moving table and had to wait until the next time around. After years of practice, I can now confidently snatch a peanut as it’s flying by me on a lazy Susan-practice really does make perfect! In the first few months, I was laughed at so many times by Chinese people while they watched me struggle with chopsticks. That probably explains why one of my favorite things to do while dining out in many Western restaurants in town is watching young, trendy Chinese people struggle with their forks and knives.
I had eaten chow mein before, as well as egg fried rice and Kung Pao chicken, but there were plenty of Chinese dishes that gave me culture shock in my first few months here. ____79____ While Americans basically only eat chicken breasts, wings, and thighs, Chinese will also dig into the liver, heart and especially the feet. There’s an old Chinese belief that eating an animal organ will benefit your corresponding organ-eating a heart is good for your heart, and eating a brain will make you smart. You can figure out the rest yourself.
Despite all of this food-related culture shock, I can honestly say that one of the best things about living here is the food and dining out. Chinese cuisine is so complex and varied that you could spend an entire lifetime here and not taste it all. ____80____ To be honest, now when I go home to visit I actually end up missing Chinese food more. Sometimes, culture shock is a good thing!
A. People often ask me about what food I miss the most from back home.
B. I understand that Chinese food is closely related to the Chinese way of life.
C. After arriving here, I quickly found out that not a single one of those things is served in China.
D. For example, Chinese people enjoy eating just about any part of an animal.
E. When Chinese people place an order, they are expecting a series of courses.
F. Usually it starts out with some cold dishes, and then moves into a wide variety of main courses.

【原文】Leisure is threatening Japanese traditions. As part of its attempt to increase imports, the government is trying to get people to work less and spend more while workers are turning their back on the attempt. The figures support the Western prejudice that the Japanese are all work and no play. Trying to force workers away from their desks and machines, the government said last April that the country should cut down from its 2,100 hours average work year to 1,899 hours but some persuasion will be needed. Small companies are very angry about it and they fear competitors may not cut hours. The unions are no happier: they have even advertised in newspapers arguing their case against the foreign pressure that is forcing leisure upon them. They say that shorter hours are a disguised pay cut. The industrialists, who have no objection to the government’s plans, admit that shorter hours will help them cut costs. Younger Japanese who are supposed to be acting against their hard-working parents, show no sign of wanting time off, either. But unlike older workers, they do spend money in their spare time. Not content with watching television, they dance, dress up, sit in cafes, go to pop concerts and generally drive the leisure-industry boom. Now that they know how to consume, maybe the West can teach them to relax and enjoy themselves, too.
Questions:1. Why does the government want the Japanese to have more spare time
2. Which group of people in Japan are in favor of the shorter-hour system
3. What do we learn about the younger Japanese according to the passage

【答案】14. D 15. A 16. B
【解析】
【原文】There is no doubt that adults, and even highly educated adults, vary greatly in the speed and efficiency of their reading. Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to go back over what has already been read. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading based on the type of reading material and according to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads. Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.
Questions:
1. What idea does the speaker mainly want to convey
2. How do good readers deal with light reading matter
3. What is typical of inefficient readers in terms of reading speed

Of course, there may well be some people who prefer to commit fully to either work or play, rather than combine the two activities.

69. The underlined part in paragraph 2 implies that the documentary will help________.

【70题详解】
主旨大意题。第四段主要讲述了Wood寻访搜查关于杜甫素材的过程,通过“From the Yellow River to the Yangtze Gorges, and down to the forested hills of Hunan province, Wood visited a number of places such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi in Henan province and Tang Dynasty capital Chang’an, today’s Xi’an.(从黄河到长江三峡,再到湖南省的山林,Wood参观了许多地方,比如杜甫的故乡河南巩义、唐代首都长安、西安等地)”可知,Wood为了纪录片的制作付出了很多努力。故选D。

D. They coin terms in memory of criminal times.
75. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Kangaroos' living conditions are getting tougher.
B. Forest fires threatened Australian's life to a great extent.
C. Potential danger is here and there on the roads in Victoria.
D. Australians' jokes may not be as careless as they seem on the surface.
76. The passage mainly talks about ______.
A. how the late 1700s impacted Australia
B. why Australians enjoy casual life so much
C. what contributes to Australians' relaxed lifestyle
D. how Australians present their attitude towards life
【答案】73. C 74. C 75. D 76. D

【74题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Cockney rhyming slang brought over by the British working class was abbreviated even further - so " have a Captains Cook"(have a look). became "ava captains".Words like "good day" became "g' day". and barbecue was "barbie".(由英国工人阶级带来的伦敦腔押韵俚语被进一步缩写——所以“have a captain Cook”(看一下),写成了“ava captains”。诸如“ good day”变成了“ g’ day”。“ barbecue”变成了“ barbie”。)”可知,澳大利亚人使用语言的一个特点是他们偏爱缩略形式的表达方式。故选C项。
【75题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The tough conditions of settler times also played a part in Australians' dry self-criticizing and sarcastic sense of humor. While in many countries it's considered poor taste to find humor in difficult circumstances. Australians lend to look at the lighter side.
【答案】77. C 78. F 79. D 80. A
【解析】

【78题详解】
上文“a Chinese dinner is a marathon of food.”(中餐菜品丰富,用餐就像马拉松。)提到中国菜的丰富。F项“Usually it starts out with some cold dishes, and then moves into a wide variety of main courses.”(通常一开始是一些凉菜,然后是各种各样的主菜。)中it指代上文a Chinese dinner,且a wide variety of main courses正是对a marathon of food的照应。故选F项。
【79题详解】
设空处上文“but there were plenty of Chinese dishes that gave me culture shock”(但有很多中国菜让我感受到文化冲击……)提到中国菜让我感到吃惊。D项“For example, Chinese people enjoy eating just about any part of an animal.”(例如,中国人喜欢吃动物的任何部位。)对culture shock进行具体举例,且与下文“While Americans basically only eat chicken breasts, wings, and thighs, Chinese will also dig into the liver, heart and especially the feet.”(美国人基本上只吃鸡胸、鸡翅和鸡腿,而中国人也会吃鸡肝、鸡心,尤其是鸡脚。)是对D项的进一步解释说明。故选D项。
【80题详解】
A项“People often ask me about what food I miss the most from back home.”(人们经常问我回国后最想念什么食物。)中ask me about what food I miss与下文“To be honest, now when I go home to visit I actually end up missing Chinese food more.”(说实话,现在当我回国的时候,我实际上更想念中国菜了。)中I actually end up missing Chinese food more一问一答,相互呼应。故选A项。

【解析】
【详解】考查时态、动词短语。陈述客观事实,谓语动词用一般现在时;“本次比赛的运动员”表达为the athletes of this competition,作主语;“渴望夺冠”表达为动词短语desire to win the championship;“年龄从20岁到35岁不等”用range表达,range in age from 20 to 35,range与逻辑主语athletes之间为主谓关系,应用现在分词,作后置定语。结合其他汉语提示,故翻译为:All the athletes of this competition, ranging in age from 20 to 35, desire to win the championship.
82. 这是他第一次在全班面前做演讲,这给大家留下了深刻的印象。(that) (汉译英)
【答案】It is the first time that he has delivered a speech in front of the whole class, which leaves a deep impression on everyone.
【解析】
【详解】考查固定句型、定语从句。表示“第一次做某事”用固定句型It is the first time that sb. has done sth,;表示“做演讲”用deliver a speech,故本句用It is the first time that he has delivered a speech。表示“在全班面前”用in front of the whole class。表示“这给大家留下了深刻的印象”用非限制性定语从句形式表示。从句主语用which代替主句;表示“给某人留下了深刻的印象”用短语leave a deep impression on sb.,因主语which为第三人称单数,故本句用leaves a deep impression on。表示“大家”用everyone,作介词on的宾语。故句子翻译为It is the first time that he has delivered a speech in front of the whole class, which leaves a deep impression on everyone.
83. 学生们应充分意识到这样的事实:能力、努力和健康是成功的三大要素。(aware) (汉译英)
【答案】Students should be fully aware of the fact that ability, efforts and health are three important factors of success.
