Claude Monet was a French painter who was the leader and advocate of the Impressionist style. When Claude, the eldest son of a grocer, was five years old, the family moved to the Normandy coast, where his father took over the management of his family’s grocery business. This event has more than biographical significance. It was Monet’s childhood, spent along the beaches and the knowledge he gained of the sea and the rapidly shifting Norman weather that would one day give rise to his fresh vision of nature. In these early years, he also finished pencil sketches of sailing ships, which were almost technical in their clear descriptiveness. His aunt, Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, was an amateur painter, and, perhaps at her suggestion, Claude went to study drawing with a local artist. But his life as a painter did not begin until he was befriended by Eugène Boudin, who introduced Monet to the practice of painting in the open air. The experience set the direction for Monet, who for more than 60 years would concentrate on visible phenomena.
As the 1870s began, Monet continued his pursuit of natural phenomena. In order to avoid the Franco-German War, he left his family and traveled to London. There, he was introduced to Paul Durand-Ruel, who was to become his dealer. The years he lived there marked the height of the Impressionist movement. He helped organize an independent exhibition of the Impressionists’ work in 1874. Impression: Sunrise (1872), one of Monet’s works at the exhibition, inspired the journalist Louis Leroy to give the group its name.
Monet attracted the dedicated support of collectors throughout his career, most notably from Americans. His influence on other artists was wide-ranging. During the years 1886 to 1914, a colony(群体) of mainly American artists gathered around him and regarded him as the best example of modern French painting. They adopted his fresh palette(调色板), subject matter, and natural style and eventually introduced these elements to American art.

The first step in writing any poem is coming up with something to write about. To do that, you have to choose deep or attractive material. Anything can be the topic for great poems that have been written about such topics as a gas station or pieces of broken glass on the beach.
It’s easiest to write a good poem about something you know well, that you have experienced firsthand, or that you have nearby so that you can observe it carefully. This is what makes the poem deep and interesting, what will be the hidden details or qualities you discover or the things that remind you of the unique view.
In his book Poetry in the Making, the poet Ted Hughes talks about how to write a poem about an animal. “The key,” he says, “is to concentrate hard enough on the animal, to choose the words that best catch the animal you have in your mind.” You can use this approach with any poem.
In the beginning, you don’t have to worry about the “style” or writing in a “poetic” way which means being filled with rhythm and beauty. In fact, if you start to think about being poetic, it can puzzle you from what you’re actually writing about and hurt your poem. Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone who was trying to impress you Then you know how boring this can be. The person is really thinking about himself or herself, not about the conversation. Similarly, if you are worrying about what impression your poem will make, then that takes your attention away from the topic of your poem.
In a word, if the poem is about you or your life, try to take the angle of a careful reporter when you write it down. You should focus on accurately communicating an aspect of your experience instead of focusing on what impression you are making when you do it.

Animal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. The problem has led to efforts to “rewild” places where such life existed before human development, pollution, and climate change forced it out. The American city of Detroit is an example of how human actions can increase rewilding, which generally means helping natural systems in damaged locations, removing dams, or building tunnels to reconnect animal pathways cut by roads.
Detroit’s population reached a high of 1.8 million in the 1950s. Then the population began dropping. By 2000, there were fewer than one million people living in the city. Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years. Some structures were destroyed, leaving empty areas that plants and animals regained as habitats. Nonprofit groups have also planted trees and community gardens in these areas. Bald eagles found their way back as bans on DDT and some other insect poisons were put in place nationwide. Anti-pollution laws and government-supported cleanups made nearby rivers better for fish and native plants.
Now, Detroit is home to 300 bird species and is a busy visiting place for ducks and others during migration. Additionally, this city offers a special way to study plants and animals in urban settings. Unlike most big cities, its population is decreasing but its streets and buildings remain in place. And there are many kinds of habitats, including large lakes, rivers, and human neighborhoods. Detroit’s parklands are so quiet that people don’t even know they’re in the city.
“It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said John Hartig, a professor at the University of Windsor. “Now that’s not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur. The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to anticipate the presence of more and more wildlife. After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to living with wildlife. To really make a difference in dealing with the biodiversity crisis, you’re going to have to have people on board.”
