Electricity plays an important part in our daily life. Without electricity, people can’t work, cook, or watch TV. The traffic lights on the streets also stopped working.
Blackouts (停电) can happen at any time. So, it’s important to be prepared for a blackout. Here are a few tips for you.
◇Keep a flashlight and some batteries (电池) in every room of your home. Sure, your smartphone has a flashlight. However, if a blackout lasts for a few hours, you might want to save that phone charge for other use.
◇Keep some candles and matches, but be careful while using them. You can never be too careful with fire.
◇Keep some food that doesn’t need cooking and has a long shelf life (保质期). Canned food would work well here. Also, remember to keep some bottled water at home.
◇If your family has medicine that needs to be kept cold, make sure you have some ice packs ready. Put them along with the medicine in your fridge. When a blackout hits, only open your fridge when you need the medicine — the cold air inside escapes each time it’s opened.
◇Know your neighborhood well. During a blackout, your air conditioning (空调) will be out. Make sure you know the air-conditioned places (such as convenience stores). If it gets dangerously hot or cold, you can go there.

Liu Wei often works at night. He searches in parking lot. He hides himself in long grass. He carefully checks underground pipelines (管道). The 35-year-old man from Shanghai is a detective (侦探). He’s not catching criminals, though. Instead, he’s looking for people’s missing pets.
Liu began to do the job in 2012. He has helped to find more than 1,000 cats, dogs, lizards (蜥蜴) and even snakes for their owners so far. “It’s a great sense of achievement when I finally find a missing pet after days of hard work,” he said.
Before heading out, Liu usually asks his clients (客户) many questions about their lost pets. The information helps him decide where to start. He also knows how to make good use of modern equipment. For example, an infrared thermal imager (红外热像仪) can be helpful in locating a pet that may be hiding in a hole. In Liu’s experience, cats have a better chance of being found. They just hide in dark, small places instead of moving very far away. Dogs, however, are more likely to be stolen. This makes finding a missing dog more difficult.
The pet detective business (生意) has been growing fast in recent years as more people keep pets at home. Hiring (雇佣) a pet detective is not cheap. It can cost more than 10,000 yuan, but it’s worth it for pet owners. “They’re not animals,” Liu said. “They’re members of the family.”

Taking a shower can always help relax our body. But did you know that it can also relax our mind Some people even do their best thinking in the shower!
In a 2019 study, 87 scientists and 98 writers recorded their creative ideas each day. They also recorded what they were doing at the time. According to the results, most of their creative ideas appeared at work. But about 20 percent came when they were doing things like taking a shower or washing dishes.
Why did they get good ideas at these moments (时刻) Well, this is called the “shower effect (效应)”. It is because of a brain pattern (模式) called the Default Mode Network (DMN, 默认模式网络). It comes into play when you are relaxing or doing some simple tasks (任务). These tasks usually don’t need much thought.
“Even when you are not working on a problem, your brain still keeps working,” scientist Randy L. Buckner explained. “The DMN helps you mix things up in different ways in your mind and imagine what could happen.”
So, when you are stuck on a problem, try doing something mindless (无需动脑筋的)! Besides taking a shower, you can also do dishes or even just take a walk outside. You may come up with new ideas when you allow your mind to wander.
56. According to the “shower effect”, which of the following moment will you come up with a creative idea

C. Taking a shower can not only help relax our body, but also relax our mind.
D. Most of our creative ideas appeared when we are doing something mindless.

Many people believe that housework is just women’s work. Even some women share the same opinion. However, Hajer Sharief, a well-known human rights activist (人权活动家) in Libya, doesn’t think so. She strongly believe that housework should be a shared responsibility (共同责任). Even when she was a little girl, she gave voice to it.
Hajer grew up as the only girl in her family. When she was 13, she felt sad and angry that she was the only one to do the dishes in her family at home. She brought it up in a family meeting. However, her two brothers didn’t think it was a problem because none of the other boys they knew were doing the dishes. Seeing no solution to her problem, Hajer suggested in another family meeting that instead of one person doing all the dishes, each family member should do their own dishes. As a peace offering, Hajer said she’d wash the pots as well. Everyone in her family agreed. The problem was solved.
The idea was not to do the same thing as little Hajer did. Instead, we need to think of it as a way to take control. If you think that there is anything unfair, it’s OK to feel sad and angry, but don’t let it to control you. Use your power, knowledge and technique (技巧) to understand others and communicate with them. Then things may work out in your favor.

Dear David,
You said you were unhappy because you had few friends at school. I have some advice for you. First, try to be more active, which can help you make more friends easily. Second, be friendly to others and say hello or goodbye to them when you meet or leave them. It will make you more popular because people always like polite man. Third, study hard and get good grades. Hard work always make people think you are smart and great. More people would like to know you and be your friends.
I hope my advice will be helpful.
Yours,
Tony
