One day a young visitor looked at this wasteland and called it an awful area. Paul knocked him down. From then on, something happened inside him.Years later Paul was back in the area, and he went to the smelter office. He asked if they had any plans or if they would let him try to bring the trees back. The answer from that big industry was “No”.Paul then went to college to study the science of plants. Unfortunately, his teachers said there weren’t any birds or squirrels to spread the seeds. It would be a waste of his life to try to do it. Everyone knew that, he was told. Even if he was knowledgeable as he had expected, he wouldn’t get his idea accepted.Paul later got married and had some kids. But his dream would not die. And then one night he did what he could with what he had. As Samuel Johnson wrote, “It is common to overlook what is near by keeping the eye fixed on something remote. Attainable (可得到的) good is often ignored by minds busied in wide ranges.” Under the cover of darkness, he went secretly into the wasteland and started planting. And every week, he made his secret journey into the wasteland and planted trees and grass. For fifteen years he did this against the plain common sense. Slowly rabbits appeared. Later, as there was legal pressure to clean up the environment, the company actually hired Paul to do what he was already doing. Now the place is fourteen thousand acres of trees and grass and bushes, and Paul has received almost every environmental award Utah has. It took him until his hair turned white, but he managed to keep that impossible vow he made to himself as a child.4. According to the passage, which of the following sentences is TRUE A. He persuaded the factory to make some plans to deal with the pollution voluntarily.B. He learned a lot about the science of plants while he was in college.C. His teachers offered his some advice on solving the pollution problem.D. At first, he managed to get some people to accept his idea.5. What does the underlined phrase in the Paragraph 5 “the plain common sense” probably refer to A. That it was impossible for trees to grow on the wasteland.B. That no one would like to join him in the efforts.C. That his normal work and life would be greatly affected.D. That he had to keep everything he did secret.6. The company hired Paul to plant trees and grass because ______.A. they realized the importance of environmental protectionB. Paul persuaded them to help himC. what Paul was doing moved themD. they were forced to do so7. The message of the passage is that ______.A. action speaks louder than wordsB. God helps those who help themselvesC. determination works wondersD. many hands make light work【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第三段第一句“Paul then went to college to study the science of plants.”(保罗随后进入大学学习植物科学。)和最后一句“Even if he was knowledgeable as he had expected, he wouldn’t get his idea accepted.”(即使他如他所期望的那样知识渊博,他的想法也没有被接受。) 根据第五段第一句“And every week, he made his secret journey into the wasteland and planted trees and grass.”(每个星期,他都秘密地到荒地里去植树种草。) 故选A。 根据倒第二段最后一句“Later, as there was legal pressure to clean up the environment, the company actually hired Paul to do what he was already doing.”(后来,由于有清理环境的法律压力,该公司实际上雇佣了保罗,让他做他已经在做的事情。) 根据最后一段最后一句“It took him until his hair turned white, but he managed to keep that impossible vow he made to himself as a child.”(直到他的头发都变白了他才做到这件事,但他成功地实现了他小时候对自己许下的不可能的誓言。) C。CAcademic dishonesty is nothing new. As long as there have been homework assignments and tests, there have been cheaters. The way that cheating looks has changed over time, though, particularly now that technology has made it easier than ever. A study by the Josephson Institute of Ethics interviewed 23,000 high school students and asked them a variety of questions about academic ethics. Of the teens surveyed, 51 percent said that they had knowingly cheated at some point on an exam but that they did not feel uneasy about the behaviour. A Common Sense Media survey found that 35 percent of students had cheated via smartphone, though the parents surveyed in that particular study did not believe their kids had ever cheated. In many cases, students did not realize that strategies like looking up answers on a smartphone were actually cheating at all.In today’s classrooms, students who cheat are rarely caught. There are no formulas written on the insides of hands or students looking across the aisle, or whispering answers to their classmates. Today’s students use smartphones, tablets or even in-class computers to aid their cheating attempts and leave no trace of their crimes. Since cheating through technology is not listed specifically as being against the rules in many school policies, students do not view the actions unethical (不合道德的).The technology is being adopted so quickly that school districts cannot adequately keep up with cheating policies, or even awareness campaigns that alert students to the problem with using technology to find answers in a certain way. From a young age, students learn that answers exist conveniently at their fingertips through search engines and expert websites.Schools must develop anti-cheating policies that include technology and these policies must be updated consistently. Teachers must stay on guard when it comes to what their students are doing in classrooms and how technology could be playing a negative role in the learning process. Parents must also talk to their kids about the appropriate ways to find academic answers and alert them to unethical behaviours that may seem innocent in their own eyes.8. What do we learn from the study by the Josephson Institute of Ethics A. Over half of the students interviewed were unaware they were cheating.B. Cheating was becoming a way of life for a majority of high school teens.C. Cheating was getting more and more difficult for high school students.D. More than half of the interviewees felt no sense of guilt over cheating.9. What did the Common Sense Media survey reveal A. Most parents tended to overprotect their children.B. Parents and kids had conflicting ideas over cheating.C. Students were in urgent need of ethical education.D. Many students committed cheating without parents’ awareness.10. What does the author think schools should do to tackle cheating A. Alert parents to their children’s behaviour. B. Reform their exam methods constantly.C. Take advantage of the latest technologies. D. Bring policies against cheating up to date.11. What does the author suggest teachers do in the classroom A. Prevent students from using electronic devices. B. Develop more effective anti-cheating strategies.C. Guard against students’ misuse of technology D. Find more ways to stop students’ unethical acts.【答案】8. D 9. D 10. D 11. 根据第一段的“A study by the Josephson Institute of Ethics interviewed 23,000 high school students and asked them a variety of questions about academic ethics. (Common Sense Media的一项调查发现,35%的学生通过智能手机作弊,然而在该研究中接受调查的家长不认为他们的孩子曾经作弊)”推知,许多学生在家长不知情的情况下作弊。故选D。【10题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Schools must develop anti-cheating policies that include technology and these policies must be updated consistently. (学校必须制定包括技术在内的反作弊政策,这些政策必须不断更新)”可知,作者认为为了应对作弊,学校应该制定最新的反作弊政策,并不断更新。故选D。【11题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Teachers must stay on guard when it comes to what their students are doing in classrooms and how technology could be playing a negative role in the learning process. (当涉及到学生在教室里做什么以及科技如何在学习过程中发挥负面作用时,教师必须保持警惕)”可知,作者建议老师在课堂上警惕学生滥用科技产品。故选C。DI'm always surprised when I hear the stats (统计数据) about how little time kids spend outside. One study found children are spending less than half the amount of time outdoors than they did just 20 years ago. Meanwhile, the Kaiser Family Foundation found that kids spend an average of seven hours a day using electronic media. My own childhood was filled with outdoor time. I built forts in the woods, rode my bike with friends, went ice skating in the winter, climbed trees and rocks, and read books on a platform in a tree on hot days. But my nature time wasn't limited to after-school and weekend activities. I attended a public school in New York's Hudson Valley, and we spent almost all our gym outside. We spent science classes on the acres that surrounded our school, collecting samples from trees and learning about everything from chemistry to physics. All that outside time isn't just about health and getting kids to exercise more. Several studies also have linked outside time to higher test scores, lower anxiety and aggression, more creativity and improved attention spans.A public school in Vermont, is taking these results seriously. Eliza Minnucci’s kindergarten class there engages in Forest Mondays, during which the students spend the whole day in the woods, rain or shine.Minnucci said that playing outdoors involves plenty of learning. It’s fairly easy to weave lessons into nature play. Kids wanted to know the names of birds, plants, rocks and clouds. We followed streams into larger streams into larger streams into a pond and created bridges with logs and stones. We even made up stories about ants and butterfly. For the older kids, we had more defined lesson plans, but we were still outside the whole time, and we would often go off on a tangent(转向)if something interesting was happening, so the learning experience was always fresh and engaging. Besides learning and moving around freely instead of sitting at desks, the kids were having fun while they learned, which made them excited for the next lesson.12. Why does the author mention little outdoor time kids spend at the beginning of the passage A. To make the official data known.B. To focus on children s mind and body.C. To introduce the topic for the passage.D. To explain the reason for little outdoor time.13. What does the author think of kids spending time outdoors A. Bad for kids, attention.B. Harmful to kids, anxiety.C. Doubtful of kids' test scores.D. Beneficial to kids’ mind and body.14. What lessons does building bridges with woods and stones involve A. Physics and teamwork.B. Chemistry and investigation.C. Biology and geology.D. Language and creativity.15. What would be the best title of the passage A. Kids Get Creative in Playing OutdoorsB. Why Outdoor Education for Kids MattersC. Learning Outdoors Is the Goal of EducationD. Outdoor Lessons Involve Kids' Learning【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第一段“I'm always surprised when I hear the stats (统计数据) about how little time kids spend outside. One study found children are spending less than half the amount of time outdoors than they did just 20 years ago.(我总是惊讶于听到关于小孩花很少的时间在户外的统计数据。一项研究发现:孩子们花在户外的时间比20年前的人少一半)” 及第二段“My own childhood was filled with outdoor time.(我的童年充满了户外活动)”可知,作者从第一段以自己得知孩子们的户外时间少而感到吃惊开篇,并且文章接下来继续谈论孩子们的户外学习时间,目的是为了引出本文的话题。故选C项。【13题详解】推理判断题。根据第四段“All that outside time isn't just about health and getting kids to exercise more. Several studies also have linked outside time to higher test scores, lower anxiety and aggression, more creativity and improved attention spans.(所有的户外时间不仅关于健康和让孩子得到更多锻炼。 根据最后一段“We followed streams into larger streams into larger streams into a pond and created bridges with logs and stones.(我们要遵从小溪变成较大溪流到更大的河流到一个池塘,然后用木头和石头建桥)”可知,用木头和石头建桥涉及团队合作。 根据第四段“All that outside time isn't just about health and getting kids to exercise more. Several studies also have linked outside time to higher test scores, lower anxiety and aggression, more creativity and improved attention spans.(所有的户外时间不仅仅关于健康和让孩子得到更多锻炼。一些研究也把户外时间与更高的分数、更低的焦虑和攻击性、更具创造性、改善注意度相关联)”可知,第四段介绍户外教育有益孩子的身心健康。及最后一段“Minnucci said that playing outdoors involves plenty of learning.(Minnucci说在户外玩包含了许多学习)”可知,最后一段概括了户外教育对小孩重要的原因。 Years ago, I decided to take the adventure and start working from home. How could this be I hadn’t missed a practice or a game in three years. Terry couldn’t claim this flawless record.Everyone gathered around Terry with congratulations, but I was glued to my seat that only moments before was the springboard to my throne (宝座). She had stolen my thunder and swept my dream right out from under me. Finally, I walked over to Terry on shaky legs and managed a “Good luck, Terry,” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry. Terry hugged me close and said, “I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock.” I didn’t reply her with mean words but deep inside I wanted to do just that. All the way home, I sobbed. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind that they couldn’t see the one most deserving of being named captain. I slammed the front door, stomped up the steps and threw myself onto my bed in a dramatic display of sobs and sighs that eventually gave way to sleep. The next morning I marched over to my closet and took out my uniform. Once it was in my hands and I held it close to me, I knew I couldn’t quit. Heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates. How hard it was to go to that first practice after Terry had been named captain. Paul persuaded them to help himC. what Paul was doing moved themD they were forced to do so7. The message of the passage is that ______.A. action speaks louder than wordsB. God helps those who help themselvesC. determination works wondersD. many hands make light workCAcademic dishonesty is nothing new. Find more ways to stop students’ unethical acts.DI'm always surprised when I hear the stats (统计数据) about how little time kids spend outside. Language and creativity.15 What would be the best title of the passage A. Kids Get Creative in Playing OutdoorsB. Why Outdoor Education for Kids MattersC. Learning Outdoors Is the Goal of EducationD. How could this be I hadn’t missed a practice or a game in three years. Terry couldn’t claim this flawless record.Everyone gathered around Terry with congratulations, but I was glued to my seat that only moments before was the springboard to my throne (宝座). Once it was in my hands and I held it close to me, I knew I couldn’t quit. Heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates. How hard it was to go to that first practice after Terry had been named captain. The moment I arrived, Coach Maguire asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic practice. Terry was assigned three as well. Just then Terry asked me if we could gather all the girls and work with them together.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________At the end of the year, the Annual Sports Award Ceremony was held to honor the valuable players and cheerleaders.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 展开更多......
