It is a popular day for giving additional (另外的) gifts. It has been celebrated for so long, but nobody exactly knows how it started.
Some people believe Boxing Day began in the Middle Ages. In those days, in some special places there were special collection boxes where people threw money for the poor. The day after Christmas the boxes were opened, and the money was counted. Then the money went to helping the poor in the area.
Others believe Boxing Day started about 300 years ago when some rich people had Christmas feasts (盛宴). they offered lots of food to their guests. Because many servants (仆人) were needed to make and serve the food, they could not celebrate Christmas with their families. To thank them, the rich people would put food into boxes for their servants to take home.

Chinese dragon Head-raising Day is a traditional Chinese festival held on the second day of the second month of the Chinese calendar. It makes the start of spring and farming. Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall increases because the rain-bringing Dragon King has woken up from his winter sleep. In ancient times, farming highly depended on the weather. Proper rainfall and plenty of sunlight were necessary for a good harvest at the end of the year. The Chinese dragon, besides a symbol of good luck and great power, is also the god managing weather and water. So Dragon Head-raising Day is about honoring the Chinese dragon and praying for good weather in spring.
The festival celebrates ancient agrarian (农耕的) Chinese culture, and while some of traditional ways to celebrate it are no longer practiced. Others persist.
The most famous tradition is getting a haircut. A saying warns that cutting your hair in the first month will cause your uncle to die. Although today few pay attention to it. It was once tradition for people to line up outside barber shops this day after they avoided haircuts for the preceding month.

People eat tofu balls in East China's Fujian Province during the festival while fried beans are the traditional festival food for people in parts of Shandong Province. Arbor Day: Day of Trees
Nebraska was covered with few trees many years ago. The pioneers had trouble in getting enough to build houses. There was no shade from the sun or wind, and crops (庄稼) didn't grow well in the dry earth. So the idea for Arbor Day formed there.
Fortunately, among those moving into Nebraska in 1854 was J. Sterling Morton. He and his wife were nature lovers, and the home they built in Nebraska was quickly planted with trees and flowers. Morton was a reporter of Nebraska's first newspaper, then he became a member of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture (农业委员会).
On January 4, 1872, Morton first proposed (提议) a tree-planting holiday to be called "Arbor Day" at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture. The date was set for April 10, 1872. It was estimated (估计) that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day.
In the years following the Arbor Day, his ideas spread to Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota and Ohio. Today all 50 states have their own day of Trees in keeping with local weather.
Hawaii celebrates it in November, while Alaska in May! More interesting, each state has a special "state tree". The "state tree" for Nebraska is cottonwood, for Alaska is Sitka Spruce.
Arbor Day is of Arymerican origin (起源) and the idea has spread widely to other lands where it is observed as the "Greening Week" of Japan, "The New Year's Days of Trees" in Israel, "The tree-loving Week" of Korea, and "The National Festival of Tree Planting" in India. Arbor Day in its various forms is now recognized in more than fifty countries. China spends "Tree-planting Day" on March 12.
We have known a lot about Arbor Day. So we should get into action and ask as many people as possible to gather and recycle paper. Then we can use what we earn from the waste paper to buy a special tree to plant in a park or other public places. It is an act of kindness, a labor of love and a duty as citizens. Anyone can do it.
(1) Where did Arbor Day start from
(2) When did Morton first suggest Arbor Day
(3) What is Alaska's state tree
(4) How many countries have recognized Arbor Day
(5) What is the last paragraph mainly about
Except for a few times. Americans are not big present-givers. There's no exchange (交换) of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe (贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others but among ourselves we don't see the need for presents.
Even friends may never exchange presents, When I go to foreign countries. I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I don't. I don't often remember a friend's birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often. I'd get unpleasant. But, a present from a foreigner-that kind from his or her homeland—won't go wrong, except to government employees (政府职员) who can't be given presents.
You usually open a present at once in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday presents. You should only say, "It's so nice, Thanks…" when you get Christmas or birthday presents.
You may want to bring a bottle of wine (葡萄) or flowers to a dinner party, but you're never asked to. Nobody will mind you bring wind, but your friend may not use it that evening.
At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes out friends. We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year—doormen, babysitters, housecleaners, newspaper senders—anyone who has often helped us.
(1) What does "close friends" mean in the passage
A.The friends who are very kind.
B.The friends who live close to each other.
C.The friends who were once classmates.
D.The friends who you like most.
(2) Why do Americas also give presents to housecleaners at Christmas
A.To pay them. B.To help them.
C.To thank them. D.To make them work harder.
(3) Which of the following do you think is right
A.American business people don't want presents because they are rich enough.
B.The writer of this passage must be an American.
C.Everyone must give presents to one's family and friends at Christmas.
D.Government employees can get little presents from a foreigner.
(4) What is the main idea of the passage
A.Present-giving in the United States.
B.Customs in the United States.
C.American people and present-giving.
D.When and how to give presents.
