一、阅读理解
Want to be more successful If so, then you need to read a few self-help books. Here are four popular ones to get you going.
59 Seconds (2009)—by Richard Wiseman
This is a self-help book with a difference. Wiseman, a scientist, uses science to prove many self-help myths (神话) are false. For example, self-help books say that if you want to achieve a goal, you should visualize it. But Wiseman says that’s the worst thing to do. Studies show that you need to visualize the steps required to achieve the goal.
How to Win Friends& Influence People (1936)—by Dale Carnegie
This is the book that launched the self-help type. Carnegie says financial success is 15% professional knowledge and 85% the ability to express ideas, assume leadership, and motivate people. The book is full of practical advice on how to influence people by making them like you.
The Millionaire Next Door (1996)—by Thomas Stanley &William Danko
The authors of this book spent years interviewing American millionaires to figure out the secrets of their success. And they discovered that a majority of millionaires don’t live luxury lifestyles. They’re rich because they live below their means and reinvest(再投资)what they earn.
Who Moved My Cheese (1998)—by Spencer Johnson
Who Moved My Cheese An amazing way to deal with change in your work and in your life, published on September 8, 1998, is a motivational business fable(寓言). The text describes change in one’s work and life, and four typical reactions to those changes by two mice and two “little people”, during their hunt for cheese.
1、What is the key to achieving success in 59 Seconds
A. To employ science. B. To follow examples.
C. To picture steps. D. To visualize the goal.
2、What is Dale Carnegie’s book mainly about
A. How to master occupational knowledge.
B. How to apply practical techniques.
C. How to become popular persons.
D. How to gain strong management.
3、Which book can help you adapt to change in your life
A. 59 Seconds
B. Who Moved My Cheese
C. The Millionaire Next Door

When I was five years old, I played the role of the turtle in a play organized by my older sister. I had one line at the end, when I beat the sleeping rabbit to the finish line: slow and steady wins the race.
I’ve always felt that those words guided my life. I was never the fastest; I was rarely an A student. But as the careers of others paused, I kept going. My goal was always the same: to learn more this year than I had last year.
When I see slow students, that’s what I think of. Are those the students who will keep learning over their entire lifetime, and leave the “quick” students far behind The goal of education is not to gain as much knowledge as quickly as possibly, but to gain useful knowledge and keep it. As such, I would prefer a slow, thoughtful student to a fast, superficial one. As a teacher, I don’t care how “fast” someone learns something. We process information differently. To use myself as an example, I tended to be comparatively slow in my advanced undergraduate mathematics classes. In retrospect, I’ve come to realize that one of the ways I learn is “error-based”. That is, I effectively learn by making mistakes.
I seldom worried about “slow learners” when teaching medical students. I knew these young men and women could learn. Like in so many other professions, knowledge is only a part of being a doctor. I spent decades learning enough to be a doctor and decades more keeping up and improving. It never stops, and never should.
4、For what purpose did the author write the first paragraph
A. To share with readers one of his unforgettable childhood experiences.
B. To introduce the topic that continuous efforts are the final marker of success.
C. To prove that slow learners tend to have a better long-term memory.
D. To show the author’s preference for the role of the turtle.
5、Which of the following statements is true according to the author’s opinion
A. Being too slow means you miss out in today’s competitive world.
B. The more knowledge a student can learn as quickly as possibly, the better the teaching is.
C. Slow learners actually learn better when it comes to medical research.
D. Learning, like a career, or like life, is a marathon, not a sprint.
6、Which quality in a student is most appreciated by the author
A. The ability to pick up a particular subject or topic more quickly.
B. The natural flexibility at solving problems.
C. The determination to carry on a lifelong learning.
D. The willingness to try different new things.
7、Which of the following best describes the author’s belief
A. Learning makes a good man better and an evil man worse.
B. Content is better than riches.
C. More haste, less speed.
D. Constant dripping wears away a stone.
If you were asked to imagine a scientist, what image would come to your mind The idea that most of the kids have is a man wearing a white lab coat with messy hair, big glasses, and cups of colorful liquids giving off clouds of smoke. As for adults, the majority regard scientists as strange people who spend a lot of time working in a lonely lab. However, the reality is quite different.
Recently I’ve had a chance to take part in a scientific experience far from my lab and into Costa Rica. It has a large amount of wildlife due to its geographical placement between North and South America. It is home to more than 500,000 species, which represents nearly 4% of the species worldwide!
First we worked to protect wildlife at a leatherback turtle (棱皮龟) protection center. We helped the volunteers to remove rubbish from the beach to create a safe environment for turtle eggs to come out. After that we stayed at Mount Arenal where we studied seismic (地壳的) activity relating to earthquakes. During our stay at Arenal, we rode over the mountainous areas and took a long walk through the rainforest. On the last day we got a professional introduction of rocket (火箭) science and learned about new rocket technology that will be used on the international space station.
During my Costa Rica experience, I know that being a scientist doesn’t mean working in a lab all day and night. A scientist is the one who loves learning and getting a better understanding of the world from helping protect wildlife, learning about earthquakes or inventing rockets. I think that science is so much more than wearing a lab coat and mixing chemicals. Kids need to be aware of the excitement and adventures science can bring!
8、According to Paragraph 1, scientists are often believed ________.
A. to spend too much time in labs B. to do experiments in messy labs
C. to wear clothes in a different way D. to work in dangerous conditions
9、In Costa Rica, the author ________.
A. experienced an earthquake B. picked up rubbish on the beach
C. took part in rocket experiments D. helped the volunteers collect turtle eggs
10、What does the author learn about science from his experience
A. Science is more than working in a lab.
B. Science is related to chemical liquids.
C. Science is full of boring experiments.
D. Science is about wildlife and earthquakes.
11、What is the best title for the passage
A. Why I chose to study Science B. Where a Scientist Works
C. How I Travelled in Costa Rica D. What a scientist is like
For almost all of human history, the Earth's population has tended to be younger. But since the last World Population Day on July 11, a major shift occurred: There are now more people aged 65 and older than there are under age five.
World Population Day was established by the United Nations Development Program in 1989 to bring attention to population issues. Having more people on the planet is not the only concern, though, since a population's age structure matters too.
Increased lifetime is a remarkable human success story, but having more elderly people also creates a number of socioeconomic concerns. The global population will continue to age as these two groups grow in opposite directions. By 2100, the percentage of the population aged 65 and older will rise to nearly 25 percent - about five times that of children under five.
“Most developed countries have been aging for a century, giving them time to prepare for the changes. But developing countries will become old before they become rich,” says researcher Toshiko Kaneda. Many countries in Latin America and Asia are aging much faster and have less time and resources to prepare health-care systems.
What are the consequences of an older global population Supporting elderly people is more expensive than caring for young ones. Pressing issues arise like how to provide long-term care, and maintain a labor force. In developed regions like Europe, where 10 percent of the population over age 50 is childless, elderly care is a major worry.
“Not a single country has been able to change declining trends in fertility (生育) despite government requests for people to reproduce as has been done across Europe and in Japan,” Kaneda says. “The aging trend is continuous.”
But declining fertility rates can have positive effects too, says Kaneda. When fertility rates decline but the population hasn't aged yet, governments can spend more on secondary and higher education, and benefit the economy. Both Thailand and South Korea have seized the opportunity during this ideal period.
12、What do we know about the global population
A. It tended to be younger until now.
B. Age structure matters more than population size
C. People are living longer and having fewer kids.
D. Developed countries are facing tougher challenges.
13、Which chart shows the global trend in the percentage of children under five
A. B.
C. D.
14、What's Kaneda's attitude towards the global population issue
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Objective
15、What is the text mainly about
A. The declining trend in the fertility rates.
B. The consequences of the aging population.
C. The establishment of World Population Day.
D. The present situation of the global population.
